2All pass

Light opening bidders might open either the North or East hand, but at most tables, West will be left to decide what to do after three passes. With six s, a decent hand and knowing the HCP are spread approximately around the table, West certainly wants to open, but will be worried about the opponents being able to compete in a red suit. In fact, if the East and South hands were switched, then N/S would make 9-10 tricks in a contract. Not all experts agree on the exact definition of a fourth seat two level opening, but one way to play it is a hand that expects to make the contract but doesn't want partner to raise even if partner has a good hand in support. The current West hand falls into this category. The East hand is a maximum passed hand in support of s, but game is only making because the Ace is onside, the s are breaking 2-2 and declarer STILL has to guess s right. If West opens 1 and North overcalls 2, or North opens to begin with, N/S might get in trouble, as 3 is likely to go down a couple of tricks, and East will surely double 3 if West has opened the bidding. I expect +170 to be a common E/W score, so anyone getting +200 or better defending will have an excellent result.

111NTAll pass

West has a normal 1 opening and I expect most North players to bid 1 despite the hand holding significant disadvantages. The suit is pretty horrible, the honors are scattered throughout the hand and North has no shortness. On the other hand, North does have a full opening bid and the vulnerability is hard to pass up. Notice that even though South has a fit, the suit and suits are both sitting well for N/S, that they still can't even make a one level contract. A NT contract by East will be an interesting contract, as both sides will want to avoid leading any of the suits. Let's say that South leads a . Declarer wins in the West hand and now what? There is only one entry to the West hand, and declarer wants to lead all three non- suits from the West. If West has overcalled, declarer might find the play of the Queen, by assuming that the King is offside anyway. This will turn out to be an excellent start for declarer, but still doesn't get declarer up to seven tricks even if North now continues s. It looks like declarer can easily get to six tricks, but the battle will be on for the 7th trick. The play might go in a lot of different ways, but overall I expect that 1NT will fail more often than not. Certainly any pair that goes plus in either direction should get a fair matchpoint result.

1NTAll pass

1NT by West should be a common contract. South has a normal 1 opening and with 16 HCP and a good stopper, West should overcall 1NT. No one will have much to say over this and North will have to decide what to lead. With singleton facing possible shortness, North should be aware that s might be the opponents best suit, despite South's opening bid. A lead looks more appealing and will be the choice of many. Looking at all four hands, the lead doesn't matter, but it turns out that a lead might work better than a lead. On a lead, declarer will have no problems knocking out one and one , and the defense will need to cash out their three stop tricks, or else declarer will make nine tricks. On a lead, declarer can win the King and lead a and South should duck this smoothly. Declarer will have to decide whether to play South for exactly KQ3 and play the Jack, or to play South for KT3, QT3 or KQT3 and let the 9 ride. If South splits their honors it makes it easy for declarer. If the defense leads s to start with it also makes it easy as declarer can just set up a for their eighth trick. Overall, the window is pretty narrow for the defense to end up with six tricks, and I expect +120 to be a very common score for E/W.

Kenny Horneman Hand Analysis

Pass112
23All pass

The final contract will often be 2 by East , though I expect some tables will play in 3 by North or 3. North has a normal 1 opening, East has a normal 1 overcall and both South and West can raise their partner's suit, though West's hand is significantly better. At this vulnerability, N/S should consider competing to the three level. Although both of them have minimum hands, and no shortness, if 2 is making it will often be the case that 3 is going down only one, which will be a better result even if it is doubled. The main reason to pass 2 is if you think it is likely to not be making, or if you are worried that 3 will go down two doubled. Notice that if N/S are vulnerable, the math is completely different, as 3 down only one doubled will be a worse score than defending 2. North has reason to believe that 2 will make due to holding such a high concentration of values in s, so that the N/S defensive tricks are reduced. The good suit is also an indicator that E/W might not be able to double 3. All in all, I think the vulnerability really supports North bidding 3, and East will face the same problem that North did. Namely that most of East's hand is in the E/W suit, limiting the defense for their side. East doesn't know that West has a maximum, and West doesn't know that East does too, so neither partner will be comfortable doubling 3. As it happens, it's perhaps better if E/W don't double 3. East needs to get off to a trump lead and let West win the second round of s in order to prevent declarer from ruffing a and making nine tricks. Similarly, the defense is s must be careful to also hold declarer to eight tricks. South is unlikely to find a lead and so it will be up to North to find the right defense. Assume South leads a . North can win the first two tricks and then should lead a low . This isn't as dangerous as it looks. If declarer has the Jack, unless it is singleton North's play of a low won't hurt. But if declarer doesn't have the Jack, a low lead may well pay off, as South is almost sure to get into the lead in either trump or s, and then a lead through dummy will net the defense two tricks as long as declarer has at least three of them. On the actual hand, if you found this defense, you are to be congratulated, as it is the best way to hold declarer to eight tricks and I expect many defenders will let a contract make nine tricks.
