Well, what do YOU do with the West hand after a 1 opening bid? A double would work out on this hand, but will much, much, much too often lead to a disaster when East bids diamonds until the cows come home and the opponents' trumps don't split so well.

Mike Lawrence advocates four card major overcalls with strong suits and length in the opponent's opening bid suit. Usually his examples show five cards in the opening bid suit on the right of the potential overcaller, but this hand is close enough. The theory behind his advocacy is that with the club suit taken care of with the two known hands with length (clubs), the partner of the overcaller will have trump support for the four-card suit. Yep! Works again.

West will be able to crossruff for eight tricks.

East would LIKE to bid over 2 to bring hearts into the picture, but without a specific agreement the double of 2 would also suggest diamonds - the second time already in this set that the diamond suit deficiency makes a takeout double theoretically wrong.

Most will get to play 2, making three on a crossruff, while leading trumps costs trump tricks or lets the diamond suit run. Bad in either event for the defense.

Not much to say about this one, except that West has a borderline takeout double with 4333 pattern and weak hearts. East bids 1 rather than the apparently popular "responsive double which is of very debatable benefit and frequent negative aspect after responder bids over the double. Partner asked you to bid. Bid. The only possible benefit for East to double would be to bring diamonds into the picture. 8632 -- really?

After East's proper 1 bid, South doubles to show three hearts, and West should now pass to limit his hand! North bids 2, and when that is passed back to West, 2 has conveyed to East a much clearer picture of the West hand.

South will not be interested in taking a three-level excursion, and 2 will be the usual contract, just making.

West got to show his nice two suiter, North his great diamond suit, and East his trump support and modicum of decent values (aces are good cards -- A!).

Once the heart finesse is proven, of course, all declarer has to do is travel to the board to repeat the finesse, but the way to do it is to play spades, simultaneously setting up that suit in the process.

North might take a flier to check on a heart fit, relying on luck thereafter. That's how I would describe bidding 3, Stayman, with that motley collection of "points." Yes, it is true that the partnership must have 25-26 HCP when contemplating action from the North position, but where are any TRICKS?

Well, West may think that East could have one useful card and will therefore lead a hopeful 5, but if the diagram were available before the lead, the A would hit the table, securing defeat of the contract -- even 2NT.

After a low spade won on table, South is properly afraid of relinquishing the lead to East foretelling a spade shift and an avalanche of tricks for the defense. Well, there is nothing much to be done about that -- the heart suit must be risked to gain any tricks at all, so it looks like a heart to the king should be the play at trick 2. East should give a count signal and West will hold off for three rounds, preventing a fourth heart's being taken in the dummy. Back in with the A and on lead for trick 5, West should be counting points, and will place East with one or two jacks, or possibly a black queen. While a cat and mouse play by exiting with the Q may seem attractive, South would win and play hopefully on clubs... So simply exiting with a spade to the J and Q or by leading the A and low, East unblocking, will suffice to get the five tricks to which the defense is entitled.

But down, down, down, for the ambitious point-counters.

3 as an opening bid has so many flaws it was omitted from consideration -- six HCP outside the suit is a serious flaw, while opening 1 is bad from a different perspective -- it does not describe this hand. No opening choice does.

But after 1NT P P, East can stop worrying about the "extra" major HCP, and just make a 3 bid that was earlier rejected.

And that is that.

Note that opening 1 does not change must here, for Eat will be even more inclined to preempt, and North has insufficient values with which to wage war.
