AiB Team - Robert Todd and Theri Andino Hand Analysis

North passes, East passes, and South opens 1. West can make a takeout double (or just pass), and North pushes on with 1. East now passes, and South bids 1 with his unbalanced hand. West is quiet, North raises to 2, and so South has to decide how much more to bid. He's probably not excited about the shortness in anymore, but he may just go ahead an bid the game, or he may make a game try in , which North accepts.
We can see that 3NT would work because the come in, but even though this is a reasonable contract to reach, it doesn't work. Declarer loses 1, 1, and 2.

East opens 1 and South overcalls 1. West passes for now, and North tries 2. South offers 2NT, and North takes that to game, hoping that his are a source of tricks - South might also just bid 3NT himself right away.
Indeed they are! With West on lead, declarer has 2 stoppers, so can come to 10 tricks with 5, 2, 2, and at least 1 - variations on the play/defense may change those specifics.

South passes and West opens 1. North overcalls 1 and East passes. South needs to bid something, so 1NT seems safe, and now West passes. North should do something encouraging - even with "just" 12 points - so maybe a jump to 3 will get partner to raise to game, or he could try reversing into and see what happens.
But hopefully he gets to 4, where he only has to lose 1, 1, and 1 to make!

West passes, North passes, East passes, and South opens a blocking 2, which probably buys it when no one else has the shape to compete.
Declarer can play the for 1 loser, but is more likely to lose 2, to go with the 1 and 2 to still make the contract.

North opens 1 and East overcalls 1. South doubles to show interest in staying in the auction but no better more specific bid right now, and West jumps to 4 as a preemptive move. North would really like to compete further, but the colors aren't right, and he'll need to pass and hope partner can say something more. But South cannot (or will not), and so this looks like the final contract. (North could also bid 4NT, 2 places to play, over 4, and get to 5, which won't work out.)
It's not a bad sacrifice at all - losing 2, 1, and 1 for down 1, but NS could make the or game, vulnerable (although it is admittedly difficult)!

East opens 1 and South passes. West trots out 1, so North passes. East bids 1, and so West invites with 2NT and East has an easy accept to game.
What looks like a lot of tricks (and can be with some clairvoyant play) may actually turn into a battle for 9 tricks. Hypothetically, declarer could get 3, 1, 4, and 2, but could also just as easily drop a few of those tricks - although maybe the defense will help with a friendly lead/North being fairly constantly endplayed.

South passes and West opens 1NT (maybe even 1 with an upgrade to a 2NT rebid.) North passes, and over 1NT, East passes too. Over 1 , East raises to 2, and that leaves West with a tricky problem. He could ask for help in a couple of places, but East probably denies help almost everywhere (he might accept in .) He could also just blast to 4 or even better, 3NT, which East would let him play.
As it happens, NT is the place to be as there should be 4 losers in - 2, 1, and 1.

West passes, North passes, East passes, and again it comes to 4th seat to open, this time South with 1 (planning to rebid 2NT.) But West passes, North passes, and East can mostly read the writing on the wall and passes so South doesn't get to improve the contract. There's also a chance South just opened 2NT here in 4th seat, and North probably leaves it there.
Indeed, NT would have scored better, but South should be fine here. He'll basically turn it into NT by pulling trump, then coming to 3, 3, 1, and 1 tricks.
