1NTDblPass2
Pass2All pass

N/S have the potential to get in trouble after West opens 1NT on this hand. Many North pairs will not have a penalty double available over a strong NT, and North will either pass, show a one suiter and play there or show a two suiter with s and s and end up in either 2 or 2. However, any N/S pair using a good old fashioned penalty double will double with the North hand, and now South will have to decide whether they think they have enough strength to defend, or whether to pull the double and try to land in a making contract. Of course if South passed the double, West might still bid 2 which will put the pressure back on N/S to compete successfully to 2. With E/W making both 1NT and 2 and N/S making 2, there is a lot of pressure on N/S to end up in a contract rather than letting E/W play 1NT or 2 whether doubled or not.

Assuming you ended up declaring a contract as the North player, how did you play the trump suit? If the South hand had two entries, it would be right to play for a double finesse, but with only one entry, what is the correct way to play the suit? There are actually two possibilities, namely to play East for Kx or Qx or to play West for those same holdings. If you decide to play East for the doubleton then you lead the Jack from the North hand. East has to win this, or else the Queen will drop on the next round. Then later in the hand you play a to the Jack and finesse West for the other honor. If you think that West has the doubleton, then you immediately play a to the Jack without touching trump at a all and finesse a through West. Later you can then drop West's now singleton honor.

Given that the right play by declarer holds the losers to one and there are only three side suit losers, you might be wondering how the defense can hold declarer to eight tricks? The key is for East to lead a , which might happen if West has bid the suit. After three rounds of s, when declarer starts trump with the Jack, East can duck, letting West win the King and lead a fourth round of s, allowing East to score the Queen via a trump promotion. For this reason, if the defense starts with three rounds of trump a good declarer will play a to the Jack to start trump, hoping that West has a doubleton, and the defense will just have to be careful to keep declaring from gaining a second dummy entry. Any plus score on this hand should be good for that side, but the best E/W scores will go to those who make a doubled contract.

Kenny Horneman Hand Analysis

   Pass
Pass1NTAll pass

After two passes, North will have to decide what to open. As long as the suits aren't both majors (see Board 9), I think it is usually right to open 1NT. Certainly, it helps to have at least one of the two doubletons well stopped, which North does on this hand. With a full 17 count and a good five card suit, the North hand is close to being too strong to open 1NT, but I can't imagine rebidding 2 or 2NT with the North hand if South responds in a red suit, and if the North hand isn't strong enough to force game opposite a minimal response, then a 1NT opening is right. Double dummy, 1NT is the limit of the hand for N/S, but on the layout of the cards, more tricks are possible, as East does not have a good natural lead. A lead from East is particularly hazardous for the defense. Declarer can let this ride to the Jack and then lead three rounds of s. East can win and now what? If West has discarded asking for a , East might lead the Ace and another , but now declarer has an easy path to nine tricks. A continuation by East holds declarer to eight tricks, as does a exit, but only a non- lead and very careful defense from then on will hold declarer to seven tricks. Any N/S pair who score less than +120 will be below average.

  4. 1 or 4 keycards

If West opens 2 on this hand, E/W should have no problems getting to slam. Most players will mark "8.5 Quicktricks" on their convention card, but might still be reluctant to open 2 with only 17 HCP. However, with nine solid tricks in hand, and all suits controlled, it looks like a good opening bid to me. 1 is a little unlikely to get passed out, given that the opponents will have 18+ HCP and shortness if partner can't bid, but the bigger danger of opening 1 and rebidding 4 is that missing slam when partner has the right 8-11 HCP hand. If West opens 2 and East's system bid is 2, then many expert pairs will play an agreement known as "Kokish Relay". Under this agreement, West bids 2 which doesn't yet promise s, but asks East to bid 2. West can then rebid 2NT to show a better than minimum strong balanced hand, rebid 3 to show a one suited hand, or rebid any other suit to show a two suited hand with s and that suit. On this hand, West will rebid 3, and with Kings in all of the other suits, and knowing that West should have a long suit and good cards elsewhere, East can just drive to slam. Holding all of the Kings, East might well bid 6NT at matchpoints. As it happens, 6 is a much better contract, as 6NT requires the Ace onside, but 6 will make if the Ace is onside, or the suit is 4-3, as there are enough entries to the East hand to ruff the suit out unless the opponents lead trump. If West opens 1 and then rebids 4 after East's 1NT bid, does East have enough to bid on to slam? Holding zero key cards in s, it's really hard to see how, perhaps lending some evidence to opening the West hand with 2.

The bidding will be short and sweet at many tables. South has the right point count to open 1NT and 5422 distribution in and of itself is not a reason to not open 1NT. However, with both long suits in the majors, and the majority of the HCP also in the majors, I think most experts would choose to open 1. West isn't strong enough to overcall, and without a good fit, it would be risky for North to bid at all. At this vulnerability, it is tempting for North to bid just to try to keep the opponents out of the auction, but with no suit, and no fit, it looks like bidding is just asking for trouble. As it happens, passing will likely work out well, as East has no good bid in balancing seat. On this particular hand, no one can make much of anything, so keeping the bidding low will be key. This will be particularly important for N/S, as they can go for a plus if they play in 1 or set E/W in any contract, but will not be able to go plus in any contract of their own beyond 1. As it happens, 1NT might work out well for N/S as West is likely to lead a . declarer can win the Jack and lead the 9. The best the defense can do is six tricks, and any slip up will give declarer eight tricks. A contract will play similarly. Declarer has more losers, but fewer losers in a contract, and careful play should bring home seven tricks. With the poor break, I think the chances are better for overtricks in a NT contract. Furthermore, North is more likely to bid over a 1 opening than a 1NT opening, but neither of these facts make a 1NT opening with the South hand convincing. If some of the honors were in the minors, it would be much more appealing to open 1NT. Anything +100 or better for N/S should be an excellent result.
