"Ya gotta love eight card suits!!" South quite reasonably bids the spade game and has her work cut out.

West may double as it appears she has a source of tricks. If she does South may find the correct line to make the contract.

Without the double South will win the opening lead and table the AK discovering that she has two losers in trump. She must also lose one heart and one club.

If West doubles South should conclude that West has spades. (We seldom double distributional contracts without a holding in the trump suit.)

Here is a line which works and endplays West for declarer's tenth trick.

South will win the opening lead in dummy (most likely a high heart) and immediately ruff a diamond. (The idea is to eliminate diamonds from the West hand.) Declarer can now exit a heart.West will win and must return another diamond else declarer will lose one fewer tricks in the black suits. (West cannot return a spade without giving up a trick nor can she return a club.) Declarer ruffs and plays a middle spade to West (the 8 or J.) West wins and must return her last diamond.

South will trump this, cash her high spades and exit a spade to West who must return a club.

South loses one two spades and one heart. But South will only find this line if West doubles the contract.

North is not quite strong enough to bid 3 at her second turn so she opts to bid spades showing a min opener. South reverses in hearts thus showing a huge hand and North bids the notrump game. South makes one more bid showing the pattern of her hand but more importantly that she has slam interest. (She could have passed 3NT.) North cuebids her A and South bids the slam.

This board is an excellent example of why we don't lead unsupported aces against slams. If West leads her A South will ruff draw trump and she has 13 tricks off the top.

It turns out that South can make 13 tricks on any lead as she can squeeze West in the black suits. Let's suppose West leads a heart. Declarer will unblock the k, come to her hand with a second round of hearts and ruff a diamonds. She can ruff a spade to her hand, draw the last trump and run her hearts and diamonds.

She will keep the 5Q3 in her hand and dummy has the KA9. West holds the AK10.

On the last diamond West is squeezed. If she discards her A declarer pitches a club from dummy. If West discards a club declarer pitches the K from dummy.

South has the last two tricks.

Although it's short our auction is a very competitive one. West will open and North will double for takeout. If South passes unrealistically the NS partnership will report a great score on the board. South however does not expect her partner to have the Q so she will make the best bid available to her. She'll opt for notrump.

West wants to bid again however she knows she has nothing to add to the conversation.

West will lead a low heart and declarer will win East's 10. Declarer will immediately go to work on clubs. She will knows from the auction that most of the high cards are in the West hand so South will simply exit a low club. West will win, cash her A and play a third heart to dummy's queen. Declarer will call for another club again losing to West who will cash two mor heart tricks, giving the defense five in total.

Declarer has the remaining tricks.

One or tow West players may overcall 1 however because of the poor texture of their suitt and the lack of high cards in the hand we think most will choose to jam the auction with a 2 bid thus getting their hand on the table immediately.

East has the values to raise partner to game but her hand is aceless so she will quietly pass, ending the auction.

There is a magical layout on this board and declarer will win 10 tricks at every table if she takes the heart finesse. The clubs are sitting favorably. North is likely to lead a club thus making declarer's job that much easier. West has all the right cards in spades and diamonds so she will lose one trick in each of thise suits.

South doesn't have the values to show immediate support over the notrump bid however she does come into the action a little later.

Some Wests may try 3 as East should have diamond support, especially given that she denies holding four hearts.

Interestingly, East will be declaring diamonds. She'd bid the suit as a denial of hearts in response to her partner's 2 bid. She has the obvious nine tricks in five diamonds, one spade and three clubs.

The question is whether she can score a tenth trick by ruffing a heart in her hand. At the table the answer is most likely "yes." To prevent East from scoring her heart ruff, South must lead a diamond which is unlikely on our auction. South will lead a spade, her partner's bid suit.

East will win her ace and immediately lead a heart toward the board, covering South's card. North will win but cannot safely attack diamonds. North can play a heart to the South hand and South can switch to a diamond however the tempo has been lost by the defense and East will score her diamond ruff.

While we don't expect it to happen at any table, a diamond by South is the magic lead. If East plays low from dummy, North will win her king and return the suit. When she gets in with a heart she will play a third round of diamonds. If East takes her ace on the opening lead North, when she wins her heart trick will cash the K and play a third round of diamonds. East will not get a diamond ruff and will only win nine tricks.

West make check for aces or keycards however once her partner shows four card spade support and the A she knows that there is a slam in the cards. At most she will have to find a high spade honor. .

If North feels aggressive she will lead the Q else she will make a passive lead such as a diamond or a club.

If declarer can locate the Q she will have 14 tricks on the board. On this layout she can't go wrong. She'll either play her spade off the top, dropping the queen or she will finesse the J.

2PassTHINKING

This will prove a very difficult board for EW even though they have all the high cards.

East will open, West will fall out of her chair when South overcalls. (South doesn't have a great hand however she is not vulnerable and she holds a decent spade suit.) West must double in an effort to try show her values.

East would like to pass thus converting the Negative Double into a penalty however she'd also like to have one more spade in her hand to do so. Little does she know her partner has two spade tricks. So she rebids her diamonds. (It is interesting to note that South will struggle in 1 and will win three or four tricks at most. Accurate defense will hold her to three tricks and a great score for EW.)

West makes a cuebid to show her strength and East, not knowing what else she can add to the auction will likely rebid her diamonds.

If West bids 3NT she will play there. At the table we expect the partnership to get into trouble. They will overbid the board and go down. While they can make 6, the line isn't realistic. More importantly, it's difficult for West to put her partner in a slam holding a singleton honor.

So 3NT is the best spot for the partnership. Actually 1x by South is the best spot however both will prove difficult at which to arrive.

This contract hinges upon East's lead. Every East playing bridge this afternoon will lead a spade. The question is which spade should they lead. Frequently players will lead the Q from the AQJ holding and that's the killer today. That lead will establish four spades for East (if she ever regains the lead.)

North, upon winning her spade trick can scramble and win four diamonds, one heart and two clubs. She needs another trick. Declarer will most likely pin her hopes on the heart finesse. It will lose to West who will continue the suit establishing an entry to the East hand. When West returns a heart, East will still have the J10 and dummy will only retain the ace. So Dummy will be forced to overtake East's card.

If East leads either the 9 or the 6 declarer will win and has the tempo to establish a ninth trick in either the form of a second spade should East play the suit or by losing a club and winning the long club.

Declarer doeas not have the same timing on the board should East lead a high spade.

Ed Antosz Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
Pass12Pass
2Pass4All pass

West passes but plays catchup when her partner overcalls. Unfortunately for EW, their heart game has no play and their contract will fail.

Declarer can place most of the high cards in the North hand, who opened. South might have as much as one queen, however for North to have an opening big she must hold all the high cards.

South will lead her singleton spade. North will take her ace and return a low spade for South to ruff. She will exit with a club, declarer winning the trick in hand. East has very few entries to dummy.

She must consider whether to overtake her singleton diamond to get one discard in diamonds or whether to unblock her K and find a way to dummy to discard two losers on diamonds.

Regardless what she chooses the defense will prevail. North will get in to give her partner a third spade ruff. North will win at lead one club and the A. The defense will set the game contract by two tricks.
