 2All pass

At tables where N/S have strict suit quality requirements for a weak two, North will pass and E/W might end up playing 3. However, I expect most North players to open 2, and no one will have much to say over that. The defense must cash two tricks at trick one in order to hold declarer to seven tricks. Otherwise declarer can take a finesse in order to pitch a loser. But let's say East leads a , will declarer finesse? It looks right, as dummy entries are limited and declarer knows they need to lead s twice from dummy, but for the same reason, it isn't clear that declarer should cash a second , since the defense will be forced to lead back s when in with a trump, or else help declarer in the black suits. It seems that declarer's best play is to win the Queen and then lead a to the Jack, giving the defense a second chance to cash out their winners. Even if East persists with another , declarer might decide to pitch a on this, relying on making a good guess later, rather than assuming that s are splitting 3-3 and that they won't be able to avoid two losers. All in all, even though declarer can technically make eight tricks on a lead, I think this hand favors the defense, and any declarer who manages to go +110 will be well above average.

With odds favoring declarer going down in 2, it looks like E/W playing in 3 and going down will not be a good score for them. If the defense leads a against a contract, this will help the declarer and it's just possible that declarer can end up with only two losers in the black suits, and two trump losers to make 3 which will be a virtual top for E/W.

Unless N/S are a particularly aggressive pair, E/W should end up declaring on this hand, though the final contract might be either 1NT or 2. West will open 1 at most tables, and if N/S have the agreement that they can make minimal Takeout Double with only the majors, then North might double. There are hazards here as the vulnerability is poor for N/S and South is already a passed hand. Over the double, some East pairs will redouble as they hold 10 HCP, but the East hand is pretty minimal for this, although some allowances can be made for being a passed hand. However, more importantly, East has a five card major. With a five card or longer suit, it is often best to bid your suit right away, rather than redouble, especially if your hand isn't particularly oriented towards defense. If East does redouble, it might be harder for East to show their suit later. Some pairs will have the specific agreement that a bid by East denies 10 HCP, in which case East will be forced to redouble. This is a useful thing to discuss with your regular partnerships. On the actual hand, E/W cannot really double N/S in either red suit, so the final contract is likely to be 1NT or 2 by E/W whether North doubles or passes originally.

Should East correct to 2? I know very good players who would always correct to a five card major if their partner is known to be balanced. However, it isn't so clear at matchpoints. The worst two holdings for choosing 2 over 1NT are always Axxxx and Kxxxx as they are more likely to have slow losers in a contract, but are also likely to provide fast tricks in a NT contract. Also note that East has a balanced hand, and stopper help in all of the other suits. All of this discussion may sound a little involved, but the main point is that with only a five card major, you should not automatically correct a 1NT bid to your major at the two level. On the bidding shown, I would choose to pass 1NT because partner might have shortness.

As it happens, a NT contract will play well for E/W. East's should warn North away from the disastrous lead of a low , but even if North gets off to the best lead of a , N/S can do no better than to win two tricks, two tricks and a trick, assuming declarer goes after the suit and not the suit. +120 should be an above average result for E/W, as some pairs will be playing 2 and will have to play well just to make.

South's hand is too poor to open 2 even at favorable vulnerability, though I'm sure some will anyway. Whatever N/S do, it looks like E/W will end up in 3NT at most tables. East will have the benefit of knowing that West didn't open 1NT, and therefore East shouldn't be tempted to invite slam in NT. Most of the matchpoints will depend on the opening lead, which in turn will be a function of the bidding. If West is the declarer, then a lead from North will force declarer to cash out their nine tricks. A bold declarer might win the King and lead a right away, as North won't be certain who has the Queen and might not go up with the Ace and then lead the Ace. N/S pairs who play "Smith echo" will not be fooled by this, as South's spot card in the suit will tell North that South holds the Queen. If East is the declarer in NT, then South will likely lead a and if North plays the Ace, declarer will have 10 tricks. Even worse, if North ducks the Ace, declarer could win, cash two tricks, four tricks and then lead another which would endplay North into leading a . This doesn't seem a likely play by declarer, but even making 10 tricks will be an above average result. If South leads a against 3NT, declarer will be forced to duck twice, or else the defense will be able to take the first five tricks.

  1. Puppet Stayman
  2. No four or five card major

All roads seem to lead to a 3NT contract by North and most of the matchpoints will ride on whether North makes 10 or 11 tricks. If East leads a , declarer can win and knock out the Ace and now West must lead an unlikely to give declarer any guess on the hand, otherwise 11 tricks are easy. However, it is often best to find the safest lead possible when declarer has opened with 2NT (or 2 then 2NT), as communication between the two hands is critical and declarer may have limited entries to dummy, making the play of the hand difficult. Holding the Ace, East should probably choose a lead at IMPs, but it's not as clear at matchpoints. If East chooses the safest lead of a , West can win and now will likely switch to a . Declarer can play the Queen, but now East can deduce that West doesn't have the Ace and in fact is unlikely to have much useful on defense, so East can make the good choice to cash out the Ace. Overall, though, the defense has many hurdles to come to three tricks, and I think that +660 will be a pretty normal score for N/S.
