2All pass

This is an auction I've never seen before (isn't bridge wonderful?). After a 1 opening, South has the wrong shape to double directly (what would he do if partner said 1?). The other call I might consider is 1NT, and while the 10's are nice, I don't like to make light 1NT overcalls. Passing doesn't deny an opening bid, it just means that you have no suitable call.

After West's 1, East should rebid 1NT. While I like showing suits, this particular shape I always treat as balanced. If I had 15-17 I would open 1NT (unless all of my value were in my suits like 43 AKJ10 AKJ109 32 in which case I might reverse), and with 12-14 I will rebid 1NT instead of repeating the 5-card suit (and of course I can't reverse into 2). South's belated double is takeout of spades (the suit responded). It is slightly flawed, in that I'd prefer to have 4-4 in the other suits, but it pays to get into the auctions on low levels, especially at this vul where +50 (even +100) is often not enough to compensate for a making partscore.

Conventions like new-minor forcing are off in comp (you should just XX with a good hand)--so 2 is natural and non-forcing. Nobody else has anything to say.

North will probably lead a heart (a suit partner has shown in the auction) and the defense should shift to trump at an appropriate time, but can they really set it (by also preventing a heart trick)? Yes, the double-dummy thinks so, but in real life, I expect 2 to make.

Pass4All pass

South opens 1 and West should get in with this relatively ugly hand--it's an opening bid and has support for all three suits, not to mention the favorable vulnerability. When borderline about whether to double or pass, consider how much value is wasted in the opponent's suit--here, even though I have three clubs, I have no points in the suit which means that all of my cards are "working". After double, North bids 2 with a hand that's really too heavy for a "weak" call. The reason for this action is that North feels game is less likely after the double (a bad spade split, and a lot of points in the opponents' hands), so I like the preemptive effect of 2 rather than 1.

East should bid 3 to let partner know about his nice five-card suit. South follows the law and raises 2 to 3. West is quiet even with a fourth heart since he already showed all of his values. Once spades get raised, North's hand is enormous, so he breaks normal protocol and bids again. Having a void in the opponents' suit is much more favorable than one in partner's suit.

Yes, it can make six (with two finesses working and a little extra), but will anyone? Maybe. The most likely way is by seeing the J get covered on the way to dummy for a spade finesse. I wouldn't say I would laugh at anyone who asked how to get to slam, but I would bar them from looking at the double-dummy on the bottom for at least a week.

2Dbl2All pass

This is our second delayed-entry double of the set (see Board 1). The double of 2 shows the other suits (hearts and diamonds). East should still bid 2 here as a place to play, even though North has shown some hearts. I would also be sympathetic to a correction to 2 if that was the choice by East. Whatever East chooses, South will be glad to be off the hook and that will end the auction.

I see 2 making 4 (losing only a club, heart and diamond), but that might depend on the opening lead. South knows his partner has shown hearts and diamonds (and short clubs) in the auction, so might try either theK (very aggressive) or a club (very passive). On a club lead, declarer is likely to make four either by setting up spades or by playing diamonds correctly (low to the 10 and then theA). TheK lead ruins declarer's communication to draw trump so if declarer plays K, and then three rounds of spades to get back to his hand, he can't help but lose an extra diamond trick.

North opens 1NT and East would like to also open 1NT, but directors will frown on that choice. Even if double were penalties here, I don't think I would do it--to make a penalty double I want to have a hand that is better than the opponents' notrump range (or at least has a nice source of tricks). South can utilize a method known as garbage Stayman . In the old days, you would only do this with short clubs (planning on passing whatever partner responded to Stayman), but now my preferred agreement is that the sequence 1NT-2-2-2 shows a hand like this that would rather play in one of the majors than in notrump. East still has nothing good to do after 2 so South can be pleased that he has improved the contract.

After the A lead, East can safely cash one more spade but then will have to shift and will likely play a diamond. East will get another chance to play clubs when declarer takes a trump finesse so with good signaling the defenders should take two spades, two clubs and a heart. If the contract had ended in 1NT, the defenders can beat the contract, but they likely won't as East would need to find a difficult club play to prevent declarer from coming up with 7 tricks.

Honestly, I wouldn't open 2 in second seat (I like to have a slightly better suit, or just a little more purity--not those side queens and jacks), but these days, it is likely the majority action--especially at this vulnerability. South could try an offshape double and hope partner doesn't bid clubs, but with Qx in hearts and partner already a passed hand, I prefer the pass shown. West has a nice hand, but doesn't have support for partner so there's nowhere to go. North can't balance vulnerable, with nothing in his hand and with bad shape (although we should stretch to balance in this position) so 2 begins and ends the auction.

There is lots of guessing in the play (particularly in the club and heart suits). South might lead a diamond, also affording a guess in that suit (low from dummy would work great!). The play in the heart suit is a bit of a guess--you could try running the J, but if it gets covered you have to decide whether to finesse for the 9 or not.
