Pass4All pass

If South were not a passed hand, North might contemplate bidding 4, a game forcing spade raise with a singleton club, but with the original pass, it is wildly unlikely to construct a hand making slam -- not impossible, but it would require Q, AK, K, which would have been opened, or Q, a singleton heart, K, and A. a difficult parlay.

4 is the practical bid, and after losing the round aces, eleven tricks are easily captured.

A bit aggressive by East, but the odds must favor the attempt, with the likelihood of many diamond tricks.

And so it is. Aggression, within reason, pays.

Some might bid this slam, but not many, and it depends on a finesse for the club king plus a guess for the heart jack. It's a two-way finesse, pure and simple, and declarer will actually be helped by the defense's leading two rounds of diamonds. That will make the technician play hearts as follows, having been shortened in trumps in the West hand: K, then a heart to the A, revealing all, and prevailing in the quest for twelve tricks when the K pops.

South's sequence shows no interest in advancing toward game, and fewer than three hearts. With three or more hearts, a direct raise would have been appropriate with single raise values, regardless of spade length. So North should subside in the 5-2 fit. While the K is a good card, there is nothing to be done with it after diamonds are cashed.

The defense is entitled to two diamonds and two hearts. If declarer leads the 9 from dummy, West must cover to preserve those two tricks, because East holds the 8!!

Pass1Pass2NT
Pass3NTAll pass

North should avoid bidding 2NT without a heart stopper if there is a logical alternative -- there is! Bid 1 and let South declare.

Oh dear! That concept should have worked well, but the computer gives a different conclusion. Did you notice that NORTH can make ten tricks in notrump, while South can make just nine? What's that about?

Whenever you see that a different number of tricks can be made depending on who declares, be sure that there is some sort of vulnerability that can only be exploited by the defense specifically with the opening lead. Here that lead is the 5 from West, an unlikely lead. That will relieve East of pressure and an effective endplay, having to hold TWO diamond honors plus length, along with the K. The opening lead lessens that pressure, according to the computer.

Fear not. Humans don't lead singletons against notrump contracts in suits bid by the opponents. West will lead a heart and then South can make ten tricks, according to the computer. Wait! Where are those ten tricks? Two spades after the finesse works, two hearts, three clubs, and two diamonds make just nine. Where is the tenth? Perhaps a squeeze? Lead the Q, forcing the K to cover, and then West has to hold the Tx, along with the clubs and the hearts? Yes, surely that would work. But when East has just two hearts it is easier than that. Just finesse in diamonds and play the A when East returns the lead, then another diamond. When declarer wins and runs diamonds, West is rather finished, whether the spade menace had been transferred or not. The guard squeeze (holding the T works well, too!).

A bit difficult, admittedly, and maybe a bit double-dummy, but an interesting exercise, and showing the analysis will forestall inquiries requesting an explanation how it might be accomplished.

  1. Both majors, game values
  2. Control toward slam, clearly!
  3. No trump queen

A rather nice auction, really. West makes a Negative Double , having a safe landing spot back in diamonds if there is no spade fit, and East's 4 shows both majors and game forcing values. Then 4 cannot be a signoff, for surely there is a major suit fit. Ergo, 4 is a control bid. Now let's find out which major -- 4 offers, 4 corrects, and East takes the invitation extended by 4 to inquire toward slam. Off an ace and missing the trump queen means that the odds are against the slam. Signoff.

Yet the strong likelihood is that twelve tricks will be made, for declarer will be inclined to play first the honor in trumps from the short hand (K97 remaining, after the second club is ruffed), and then take the trump finesse. It works! Those who bid the slam without the mechanism to determine that the trump queen will be successful, wondering what the problem was.

Sometimes too much knowledge is detrimental to success.

West counts three trump tricks and hopes to find partner with a trick, setting the contract.

Alas -- good thing West refrained from a speculative double!

Pass3!1?
  1. Invitational with six diamonds, nine to eleven HCP, no spade fit.

GRRRRR!

East should pass, of course, for a double would be for takeout. That's OK. South will regret bidding at all, and only a pass by South will garner any matchpoints at all. Any further bid will be punished by East, who will then be rewarded for patience.

The problems started when South decided to open 1. Better to have opened in South's longest suit with 1, the six-bagger, then 1 after either red suit, in the event East passed, intending to bid spades again to show 5??6 pattern -- that should have been the initial plan.. In any event, opening 1 would solve the systemic problem that will happen as described at a very few tables.

SOMEBODY is likely to get in trouble on this hand. Will it be NS or EW? That probably will vary from table to table, and an easy prediction is that scores will be all over the place.

All pass

South cannot (well, some WILL) bid 4NT with the South hand in the auction after the Negative Double and slam-interest cue/control 4 bid if North "signs off" with 4.. If South incorrectly bids 4NT and obtains the answer "1," does North have AKQ42 QJ843 9 76? Or the actual hand? No, Asking for aces won't do the job when North has one ace.

South's sequence is highly suggestive of slam, but clearly denies a club control. Our North, with both first and third round control of clubs, heeds the call and bids the slam.

This is not a pure sequence, for North could have Axx and only four hearts, when slam would fail, but it comes closer to science than 4NT, which would miss this one.

Is there a solution to bidding the hand properly? YES! North's 4 bid was a mistake! Despite having only 12 HCP, the marvelous distribution and known heart fit should spring to mind the Losing Trick Count. North has a five loser hand, a known heart fit, a partner who has made a slam try in hearts. What on earth is North waiting for. NORTH should launch 1430 Roman Keycard Blackwood with 4NT, for it is NORTH who has the pattern and honors that will benefit from the answer to the question, "how many key cards do you have, partner?" The concerns about losing clubs that pestered South don't even rise to North's level of consciousness. A bit of visualization for North should be sufficient to place South with just the right cards, subject to confirmation with 4NT: Remember that the 4 bid denied both the A and AK, so does not South rate highly to have AK AK? Just confirm and move to slam!!

Easley Blackwood taught that it is the hand with second and third round controls that should be asking with his convention. North's present hand is a poster for his principle.
