East has a great hand even though she has few HCPs. Her hand is too strong for a 3 opening. (Most pairs agree to not have an outside ace for that preempt.) Her options are 1 and 4. We prefer the 1 opening as it keeps partner in the loop. Partner would reasonably expect an eight card suit for that bid.

South has a natural heart overcall and West will show her diamonds. West's hand is not good for notrump as she has only one heart stopper. Her clubs are vulnerable after one lead of the suit and she may have difficulty getting back and forth between dummy and her hand.

It takes a club lead to guarantee that the contract goes down however we expect most Souths to lead a high heart. (On the lead of the A and a continuation the defense will likely win three clubs and two spades. Declarer will win the second club and come to hand with a heart to ruff a club to hold the defense to four tricks. Declarer is probably thinking she has two club discards on the high diamonds.)

East will win the opening heart lead in dummy and lead a spade, trying the finesse. South will win however its not too late to cash the A and continue a club. Declarer is in dummy for the last time and must take her high diamonds but South will ruff the second diamond to score three spades. If South continues clubs the defense will get three club tricks to set the contract three.

The key to the defense if for South to attack clubs. If South persists in hearts declarer will make her contract.

South will lead a diamond and declarer has only one stopper in the suit. She's under a lot of pressure to make her contract and must take her tricks without losing the lead.

The only route to nine tricks includes five club tricks. With nine clubs the usual play is to cash the AK hoping the queen falls.

That's not going to work on this board as declarer must finesse. One option is to lead the J from dummy. If North flinches declarer may, at her own peril try the finesse. This is more poker than bridge but at times it helps us find a missing queen.

North has as "bad" a notrump opener as you will ever see. However its still better than opening 1 as North will have no good rebid. The partnership will get to the heart game.

The defense will score the obvious A. When West is in she can see that the only chance for another trick for the defense is in clubs so she should shift. If she plays anything other than a club declarer will make 12 tricks as she has two discards on dummy's spades. She can try the diamond finesse when she is in her hand.

The crux of this board is West's second bid. She knows her side will be playing diamonds. She can show the club control by bidding 5 on the way to 5.

Once she shows the A East can count 13 tricks for her side. They have one spade, six hearts, five diamonds and one club. That means 7NT.

There are several routes to 6 after South interferes however we don't expect many to find the way. If West bids 4 we think that should be a Splinter bid supporting clubs. East should now get excited, check for aces and bid the club slam.

Declarer must take the club finesse which works. She can concede one spade. After she ruffs one heart dummy is good.

We expect most will end in 4. North will long hearts, knowing partner has at least five sees no future in the suit and will lead a diamond. Declarer will win her ace, unblock the A and lead a spade. She's a hero if she rises with the ace and continues the suit. More likely she will take the spade finesse. This gives North the opportunity to switch to a club and hold declarer to one overtrick.

We can see South being very aggressive and trying the notrump game.

East's double asks for a heart lead. The double of a notrump contract asks partner to lead dummy's first bid suit. Technically West should lead the 2 however we can't fault her for leading the ace. Both leads work and the defense will take the first five tricks. West will eventually win a diamond.

However, since South was aggressive in bidding 3NT we think she should pull to 4 once East doubles.

  1. 0 or 3 Keycards
  2. Do you have the Q
  3. Yes and something in diamonds

There is little to the play of this board since spades split 2 - 2. Declarer can ruff three diamonds in her hand and discard a club on her good hearts. Dummy is good.

When West bids 2 she is not worried that partner will pass as that bid is forcing for 2/1 players. If your partnership plays Standard West must bid 3 setting a Game Force .

West will likely over value her diamond suit however five card sidesuits are golden and provide a source of tricks as is the case on this board.

If Spades split 3 - 1 declarer still has a chance of making 7. She can draw two rounds of trump and work at ruffing three diamonds in her hand. Fortunately she has the entries to dummy and will still make the grand slam.
