Developing a feel for when to interfere after the opponents have opened 1NT is difficult. It's usually advantageous to stick in a call if you can since opponents tend to be well oiled machines after opening 1NT--they can find their major-suit fits, invite, or stop low. Bidding can throw a wrench into the works and as long as you have some shape (5-4 or a six card suit) you won't get into too much trouble. What do I like to play? Well on this hand I showed 2 as spades and a minor, but you might have had more success bidding 2 (diamonds and a higher/major) or that might have gotten partner too high in diamonds or--. There's no right answer--play whatever you like and make sure you discuss with partner. Does partner's 2NT bid show a good hand for the minors or would 3 be "pass or correct"? That should be part of your discussion. West signs off in 3.

North leads the 10 and West sees a less than stellar trump suit. She can choose to make either hand the master or try for some sort of cross-ruff. If South wins the A (mistake) life gets simpler since South has no particularly good exit cards. If West wins the first trick, she might try running the J or continuing hearts. The play could go many different ways, but EW will ultimately lose 3 diamonds, a heart a and probably two clubs (guessing clubs wrong). Of course, misdefense could allow declarer to make more tricks.

Another hand with many possible auctions. After a 1 opening, South has the wrong shape for a takeout double, but I would risk a slightly offshape 1 bid (four good spades is almost like five). West would probably do a double-take when the opponents bid 1, but I don't think I would try to pass for penalties--the opponents will have someplace safe to land. I would cuebid to show a good heart raise. North breathes a sigh of relief and East knows that she will want to be in at least a game and possibly slam. She could bid 3 or 3 as a help-suit game try before continuing on, but I would try 3 to let partner know that I am interested in slam. West can cooperate with 4 and one more slam try by East will eventually lead to the hands fizzling out. If either hand takes a particularly optimistic view then they might wind up in slam.

South leads the K and East is probably happy that they are not in slam since she expects her A to get ruffed. When it survives, she should try to make 7 by ruffing her spades good.
Trick 1: A
Trick 2: ruff with K
Trick 3: A pitching a club
Trick 4: K pitching a club
Trick 5: to the J
Trick 6: ruff
Trick 7: to the Q (when they don't split 2-2, declarer can no longer make 7)
Trick 8: ruff
Trick 9: ruff a diamond or club and play the good spades--the opponents will get a trump trick

(Yes, double-dummy, 7 can be made with the actual spade lead)

After South's 1 opening, West has a real problem. You could offer this to 100 experts and would get 100 different opinions on the path to take. It starts with 3 likely choices: double, 2 (Michaels ) or 1. If you choose double, you might have to live with it when partner bids diamonds. If you choose Michaels, you might choose to pattern out by bidding diamonds later although its possibly your hand isn't good enough for that. You might also choose to pass after partner bids 2 or 2 although your hand might be too good for that. Bidding 1 has it's own problems-- you might play there with a 9-card heart fit. A million different possible auctions and the one shown here is just a guess. North-South might play in clubs, but I think West will not be happy selling out up to the 3-level although the vulnerability makes it a scary choice.

The play in diamonds is complicated. On a club lead by North, declarer has to ruff then probably try A and a ruff and then a spade finesse. If South wins the first spade and plays another club, declarer has no good choice but to ruff and cash the A (surprised when the K shows up). After another heart ruff and drawing trump, declarer has to decide whether to try to take a spade finesse (and possibly go down) or take her tricks. If you are in a scenario like this where you may plan on cashing out anyways, try running all of your trump first (assuming you don't need to ruff anything). Sometimes you will wind up seeing the Q show up or sometimes you might wind up with another good trick (imagine seeing the KQJ). This is just good technique even if you don't always spot that one of your cards is good at the end.

After 1 Pass 2 Pass North might choose only to invite, but there are lots of six-counts partner could hold that would allow you to make game so I don't mind being aggressive. A bonus of jumping to game is that the opponents will be in the dark on how to defend or what to lead.

As East, I like that I have two sequences to lead (normally, I am stuck with no attractive leads), and here I'd lead the better one with the Q. Declarer should win, draw trump and run the J. Even though it loses to the Q, the 10 will set up for a diamond discard. In the end declarer will lose two hearts and a club. See--we found a six count for partner where game makes opposite a 6-count.

3All pass

I confess I changed my auction on this hand. I originally had the auction, "1 Pass 3 (Invitational) All Pass," but I've had enough accidents playing Bergen or not playing Bergen that I decided not to show it. A good rule--if you're not sure what you play, choose the path where partner is least likely to go wrong. East is, admittedly, unhappy about the developments on this hand, but has nowhere to go after partner's 3 bid.

North should lead a spade, not her singleton heart. Why? North doesn't want a ruff with natural trump tricks and hearts are known to be East's suit. It's much better to try to find partner with the unbid suit. On a defense where the defenders get two ruffs declarer might go down 1 (one spade, two diamonds, a heart and a club). On a spade lead, declarer will go down two (two spades, a heart, two diamonds and a club).
