With both East and North having bidding decisions, this hand will often end up at the three level. North has a normal 1 opening. Note that the North hand isn't quite as good as it might appear, given the possibly useless honors in the short suits. East now has a choice. Non-vulnerable, many people will make a Michael's 2 bid showing s and a minor. However, the suits are poor and E/W is commiting their side to play at the three level. If North had opened 1 and East had s and s, it would be much more appealing to bid as E/W would be much more likely to be able to play at the two level. If East does bid 2, South might eke out a 3 bid despite the 3433 distribution and the King facing likely shortness and then North might raise to 4. If East passes, South will make a normal raise and North will have to decide whether to invite to game or not. It's a close call. North has a lot of losers and South could easily have a maximum and the three level is still not safe. At IMPs, I think North should make an invitational bid, but I don't think it's unreasonable to pass 2 at matchpoints. East might decide to wake up and get into the bidding at this point, but this just gives North a second chance to try for game and might backfire on East. North will certainly not let E/W play in 3.

If East does show a two suiter, it will actually help declarer in the play. It's not at all clear what East should lead against a contract. The Ace followed by another will give declarer the most problems. This is an unlikely lead unless East has shown a two suiter and West has bid s. Let's say that East instead leads a . Declarer wins the in hand, leads a to the Jack, Queen and King. Declarer should have no problem using one of the dummy entries in the red suits to finesse against the nine of trump even if they cash the Ace of trump first, and will end up with just one trump loser to go with the two side Aces. If East doesn't lead a , then declarer can take advantage if East has shown a two suiter by overtaking a to provide one dummy entry to take the trump finesse and using the King to finesse West for the Queen, knowing that the odds favor the Queen being in the West hand. Declarer's who have to deal with the Ace on opening lead will struggle. I expect +170 to be a fairly common score for N/S, and anyone who goes +420 will get a clear top.

North will think they have a good playing hand, but might end up in a doubled contract anyway. After East opens 1, many West's will reflexively bid 1. Although it's true that a 5-4 fit might play better than a fit, it's usually best to raise partner's major even with length in the other major when your hand isn't strong enough to be able to bid again later if the opponents interfere. Assuming West raises to 2, North has a strong enough hand to bid 3 even given the unfavorable vulnerability and having only 11 HCP. After all, if South has a fit, it's even possible on this hand that both sides are making game. Alas, it's not to be. With four s including two honors, East might well decide to double 3. East won't be certain that they can beat 3, and in fact N/S might even be making overtricks and East should definitely be concerned that North has bid with such poor vulnerability, but this is matchpoints, and the lure of being able to beat N/S by a single trick and get the magical +200 score will be enough for many East players to double. With a solid suit and two likely trump entries, it looks like East might be able to tap North out of trump even if West doesn't have much support on defense. It happens that a lead will make it relatively easy for the defense to get two tricks in each black suit and two trump suits, but a lead might allow declarer to scramble home with only five losers. Even +200 will be good for E/W, however and East will be rewarded for making a good matchpoint double.

Despite the bidding shown, I think it will be very hard for E/W to get to game in either minor suit and I don't expect it to be the final contract at many tables. After West opens 1, North is too good, especially at this vulnerability to bid 2 and can start with 1. What should East do over this? Nothing is perfect, and I think you would get some votes for double, 2 and 2 if you were to present a panel of experts with this as a bidding problem. No matter what East chooses, South isn't good enough to bid, and E/W will basically have the bidding to themselves from this point. As long as East shows some sort of interest in game, West has a good enough hand to get their side to a minor suit game, but I don't think this will be obvious to many players. There is also a good chance that E/W will end up in 3NT.

How will 3NT play? If East is a declarer, South will lead a low and North will have no better play than to continue s when in with the Ace. If West is the declarer in 3NT, things are more difficult for the defense. North will lead a low and a good declarer will play the nine from dummy. Most average defenders will play the Queen without thinking and now declarer will have a second stopper and will make at least 10 tricks. However, as long as West has shown a stopper, a good South player should be able to work out that playing the Queen can't be right. If declarer has Ax, they always have two stoppers, but if they hold Kx, A or K, then playing low keeps declarer's stoppers to one. Of course, North will need to work out when they get in that South might have the Queen even though they didn't play it, and N/S will be aided in this regard if they are using something known as "Smith echo", a defensive carding agreement that will allow South to tell North that they liked the opening lead by their choice of spot card in the suit that declarer plays next. E/W should feel good if they get to five of a minor making even though pairs in 3NT will score better if South does play the Queen on a lead. Any N/S pair who beats 3NT declared by West should also feel good about their score.

  1. Tends to deny a stopper

Aggressive E/W pairs can make things difficult for N/S on this hand. If E/W pass throughout, South will open 1NT and N/S will quickly reach either 4 or 3NT. Assuming West opens 1, East could pass, especially since E/W aren't doubled yet, but I admit that I would bid 1 planning to pass any response from partner. Whether East bids 1 or passes, South will have to decide what to do. Doubling looks best, though the 4333 distribution is certainly a drawback and will not be what partner expects. Bidding NT without a stopper would be a poor choice, however, and passing with this strong a hand looks wrong, so doubling it is. Opposite a takeout double, many North pairs will bid 1 reflexively, as less experienced players often make a minimum response to a takeout double on any hand strength up to opening count. However, this would be wrong. With something like a good 8-11 HCP, North should do something more than just make a minimum suit bid. If North hadn't passed over West's opening bid already, then many experts would prefer a jump to 2 to promise a five card suit as well as a better than minimum hand, but here, since North didn't overcall 1, the jump to 2 shouldn't necessarily promise a five card suit. With a lot of working spot cards and 16 HCP, South should be happy to bid again over North's jump. Unless you have an agreement to the contrary, it is fairly standard that when the opponents have bid two suits, then a cue bid in either one tends to promise some values there. So, South can bid 3, suggesting a stopper but no stopper. With strong values in s, North can bid 3NT, offering South a choice of games. With South's flat distribution and honors in all suits, NT should be an attractive place to play.

Is 3NT a better contract than 4? It all depends on the opening lead. Against a 3NT contract, if the defense leads s and keeps attacking the suit, then they will end up with two winners to go with a winner in each red suit, holding declarer to nine tricks. Against a 4 contract, if East leads their singleton , then West will win the King in time to give East a ruff, holding declarer to ten tricks. In either contract, on anything other than the aforementioned leads, declarer will be able to come to 11 tricks. So, 4 is a better contract looking at all four hands, but 3NT will turn out to be better whenever the defense doesn't lead s and the top scores will go to those who are +660 in a NT contract.
