3NTAll pass

This might be the worst auction I've ever shown in print. East-West are in 3NT with North-South able to make a slam! North may be too good for 2, but preempting is fun. East might not be good enough to overcall, but is shown doing so. South might try bidding his suits, but opposite a white 2, I'd be scared to get in--North could have, say, KQxxxx x xxxx xx or the like. West is light for 3NT, but with the nice diamond fit and K, it is reasonable. And there you have it--3NT by West on 18 HCP combined. It's when I print up this kind of auction that Marty Bergen calls me up and asks when we're playing again.

If North leads his suit, it will only be down 100, a nice result for East-West. This would be a fun deal to observe at every table. Will any North-South pairs in your game reach the slam in clubs? I'd be happy just to reach the nice 4 contract. This is a board where every pair might feel like they got fixed.

At unfavorable vulnerability, North might not come in the first time, but should balance on the auction shown. With only one heart, West doesn't want to defend (opponents likely have a nice fit) so goes to 3. This doesn't violate the Law, since your opponents have at least an 8-card fit and probably a 9-card fit, there might be 17 total trump. Plus, the vulnerability is in your favor--if your partner wanted to defend, he could have doubled. Note South not hanging North for balancing--4 would surely get doubled.

To make 3, you will need to have your guessing shoes on. I might try running the Q at some point, however the eventual club discard from dummy doesn't save you from having to properly guess the diamond suit. Complications abound as the bad trump split can force you to leave trump half drawn.

Even though the vulnerability is favorable, it is too risky to preempt 3 with North over 1. Whether or not North interferes, East will push the auction to 3NT. This is one of those I might call "everyone's 3N," although I suppose some Souths open light and slow the opponents. With that said, it would take a wimpy East not to bid up to 3NT if partner made a vulnerable overcall.

South likely leads Q even though East bid them (East could have only 4). Declarer should win in hand in order to lead the J. Of course, South must/should cover J. Declarer may have to make some guesses about the heart/diamond position later on.

I love opening 1NT with a five-card major. I don't love opening 1NT with a five-card major AND a four-card side suit. It's easier to show your general shape and strength by bidding naturally. That said, after 2, I think 2NT is a more comfortable rebid (since you have so-so clubs and such a great heart holding for notrump). After 1-2-2NT-3 North wants to explore for slam. Do you and your partner have an agreement of what 3NT would show (is it an offer to play, a serious slam try or a non-serious slam try)? If you play something where North-South can show extra excitement, they may find their way to slam.

Slam is so-so. Lots of handling is needed along with a decent spade break. I'm ok with +680 here when things work out. You will beat those people who chose to open 1NT and play in 3NT although some notrumpers might get away with 12 tricks if clubs aren't led.

After a 1 opening, East is too good for a direct 3, but many will probably do it anyway. You are too close to making 3NT opposite the right few cards in partner's hand. West advances with 1. It's important to discuss with partner whether this is forcing or not--do you know? If not, call partner and come back. I'll wait.

Okay, now that you now, North saves East from having to guess by bidding something. North could could bid a simple 2 on round 2, but I like the more flexible double. East should jump to show how strong his suit/hand is and West knows that game in spades scores better than game in diamonds AND it's a trick cheaper.

4 depends on the spade guess--it's conceivable to get it wrong based on North's bidding. North shouldn't even think about leading his singleton unless he wants his opponents to take the first 12 or 13 tricks on many layouts. On this deal, it only makes declarer's guessing easier since on the second diamond declarer throws away a club while North gets his ruff.
