I suspect it will be hard for both partnerships to judge their correct level on this hand. 5 is an excellent contract for N/S requiring only that East not have all three missing trump, but with only 22 HCP between them and no shortness, it is hard to see how N/S can get there. In fact, the bidding may end at 3 on this hand. The North hand looks like a normal opening bid to me, but some might pass it, in which case E/W could end up in 2 if N/S stay silent.

I think the bidding shown will be more normal, however. North opens 1, East bids 1, and South is too strong to just pass. South would prefer to have a fifth , but it is often necessary to show a limit raise in competition with only four card support for your partner's minor. Doubling certainly looks wrong with only a doubleton , and bidding 2 wouldn't be my choice, so the only options are a heavy 2 bid, or a 2 cue bid despite holding only four s. West would love to bid their seven card suit, but with only 4 HCP, and not a great suit, bidding is hazardous. North will know that their side has a big fit, but with only minimal HCP, can't really do more than bid 3. North will certainly suspect that E/W have a big fit also, likely in s given West's lack of a raise, but North can hope that the hand will pass out at 3, as N/S have at least half the HCP. Certainly East will not be able to bid again over 3, but when this passes around to West, they can now safely bid 3, knowing that they aren't showing a good hand, and that they have a fit to fall back on if necessary. With six s, North should bid again over this. East will recognize that the honors are valuable, but it will be hard to bid 4 holding so many minor suit losers.

Any E/W pair who manage to buy the auction at any level will likely do very well on this hand. The biggest danger for E/W to keep competing is that they will push N/S into 5 which would be a complete disaster. +400 for N/S will be a clear top whether they manage to bid 5 on their own, or are pushed into it.

N/S should be able to get to 4 on this hand, whether South opens 1NT or 1. Is the South hand too strong to open 1NT? It looks close to me, as the South hand manages to look both too strong for 1NT, but also not strong enough to open 1 and then jump in NT. I put the hand into a common hand evaluator routine, and the answer came back as "17.5", which confirms my own feeling that the hand is marginal for upgrading beyond a 1NT opening. If your partnership frequently upgrades 14 HCP hands to open 1NT, then you are probably forced to open 1 with the South hand, but if you are solid in your opening bids, then 1NT looks best. If South does open 1, then the North hand qualifies as a "Mixed Raise", a concept very familiar to regular readers of my analysis. A Mixed Raise is a hand with about 7-9 HCP, four card trump support, with some distribution and some defense. Mixed Raises have come up more than any other bidding concept during the almost seven years I've been doing analysis with dozens of examples occurring. (Seven years? Wow, if you've been reading the Wednesday analysis all of this time, I hope it's been an enjoyable and informative experience!!!) The North hand is at the high end for a Mixed Raise, but at this vulnerability a Mixed Raise should be a good hand anyway. South will have an easy raise to game opposite a Mixed Raise. As the bidding shows, it should also be easy for N/S to get to 4 if South opens 1NT, even if North only considers their hand as being invitational.

West has no obvious lead against 4, but unless the defense falls asleep, they should have no problems getting their three tricks. Even if West leads a and East continues the suit, declarer can do no better than to lead two rounds of trump, cash out the s pitching a from the South hand, come to the South hand in s and lead a . West has no reason to duck this, so +620 should be by far the most common score for N/S.

  1. shortness, support, game forcing values

N/S should play in 4 on this hand, though some might get to 5 while looking for slam. North has a normal 1 opening and East is nowhere close to bidding at this vulnerability. South will respond 1 and now North can make a "splinter" bid of 4. Most will be familiar with this bidding concept, but for those who are not, a Splinter bid is an unusual jump in an unbid suit showing shortness in that suit, trump support for partner and a hand strength appropriate to the bidding level. Over North's 4 bid, South has minimal HCP, but with such a good holding in partner's primary suit can afford to make one move towards slam. After all, if North's KQ were the Ace instead, then slam would have excellent prospects. If either North or South keeps moving towards slam, it will be important for someone to check for keycards and determine that two Aces are missing, so that N/S can stop safely in 5. It looks like 11 tricks will be normal on the hand, as it would be a grave error on the part of the defense for West to duck a to the Jack. If the defense starts with two rounds of s, declarer could possibly err by pulling three rounds of trump, running the suit and discovering that they still have a loser at the end. This can be avoided by simply giving up the Ace before pulling trump, but I think there will be some +420 scores for N/S to go with the majority score of +450.

  1. 5, 4, game forcing

3NT is cold and easily the best contract for N/S, but South might have some trepidation about the suit once North shows length in both majors. If South decides to play in one of the 4-3 major suit fits, this will be a disaster, even if South makes game, as 10 tricks are easy in NT and overtricks are more likely in a NT contract than in a major suit contract. South has a normal 1NT opening and most pairs will have some way to show a 54 major suit hand in response. One of the more common methods is shown in the bidding diagram. North starts by bidding 2, and if South responds with a major suit, North has found their fit and can raise. When South responds 2, North can now jump to the three level of their four card major, a bid known as "Smolen ", showing a five card holding in the other major and four cards in the bid major. This approach has the advantage that the NT opener will almost always be the declarer and will usually know the best final contract. One disadvantage is that you will sometimes play a 4-4 fit when you also have a 5-4 fit. This is a relatively minor drawback, as a 4-4 sometimes plays better anyway, and Smolen is a popular agreement among experts.

On the actual hand, South will know that s might be a problem, but it doesn't look appealing to play in one of the major suits either. If South's Q were to be in s instead, then even with a doubleton, I think 4 would be the best choice. South's worries will be unfounded as North has just enough help in s for the suit to be stopped. If West does lead a , East can win and return the suit. It's probably best for West to duck, but it won't matter. With the suit breaking, there are always 10 tricks for declarer unless they make a mistake and overtake the King with the Ace in their efforts to run the suit. This isn't necessary, with all the entries to the South hand, but some might do it anyway and end up with only four winners. If West leads a instead of a , declarer can win in hand and immediately lead a . Declarer will again have no problems making 10 tricks and might even end up with overtricks. This won't happen often though, and I expect +630 to be a relatively common score for N/S.
