North opens 1 planning to rebid 1NT if partner responds 1. Things don't go to plan, however, as partner will raise diamonds some amount depending on style and system. Is South worth a limit raise? It's close with such nice diamonds and a singleton (although the hand is worth much less if partner tries for notrump). Over either 2 or 3, West will put in a spade call. North will bid some more diamonds and though East has only four high card points, he will probably bid to 4 with five trump and a singleton. Either North or South might guess to bid to 5. If South made a limit raise, then North might also choose to double 4.

The play in either spades or diamonds is straightforward. In diamonds, the North-South pair will take 10 tricks by knocking out the A and losing one club, one spade and one diamond. In spades, E-W might take 9 tricks, but if North-South defend perfectly, it's plausible that declarer could be held to eight tricks on a single-dummy line. Declarer should try every other suit before trying hearts as the opponents will get stuck assisting in the play of the hearts.

West starts by double-counting all his points and then bidding 2 with the intention of rebidding 2NT to show 22-24 balanced points. After a continuation of P 2 P 2NT, East might think about inviting slam with a nice looking 8 points, but either 3NT or 4NT would likely end the auction since West is a minimum for this auction. I know, it's strange to think of a 22-point hand as a minimum, but you always have to reevaluate your hand based on what you've shown so far. Here, the West hand as already shown 22-24, so within that context, this is a minimum. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you have a good hand and that as a result, your hand is always good.

North will lead his better major, and with a nice sequence (QJ9) should start with the Q, not fourth-best. Declarer will go to work on the diamond suit immediately, and starts with the AQ, getting the bad news. After that, there will be a lot of guessing. I expect to see many different numbers of tricks.

East's Negative Double is a stretch, but the K looks to be well-located, possibly justifying it. South should make a strong raise of partner with four-card support and two aces. West shows the fit in hearts with 2. North bids 2 which shows no interest in game, and then two passes leave the balancing decision to West. West won't want to sell out to a known 8+-card fit, so might try to push the opponents up a level, though the colors make such an action a little scary. Either way, North-South are likely to compete to 3 unless someone holds a grudge from some past experience and doubles 3 (North might).

The defense has to go after diamonds immediately to prevent a 10th trick, so the opening lead will be important.

This is a very normal auction. Whenever I say that, however, I look and see a million different results in the common game (bridge is funny that way). I wouldn't consider bidding with the East hand at these colors, but young people like to bid and it's plausible that someone would make a takeout double. I don't advise it unless you are under the age of 30 and/or willing to go minus 500 frequently.

A spade lead seems pretty normal from the East hand--it's an unbid suit, and the most passive lead available. Do you lead low from this holding? High? Middle? Knowing these agreements is much more important than learning spiral relays or the like (do I sound crotchety? Maybe I've been living in Florida for too long). If the defense continues spades at every opportunity, declarer will likely go down. If you allowed declarer to make on this hand, you probably either played too many new suits or grabbed an ace or king in second seat. Those are two classic mistakes that contribute to misdefense.

?

Ok, this hand finally broke me. After 1 1, everyone has a tough time. I would make a Negative Double as South, but 1NT makes sense also. If South makes a Negative Double should West still bid hearts? What would redouble mean? Why do we even play this game? North will bid clubs, whatever happens, and then we will have a sequence where, starting at the second bid in the auction, East bids the suit South intended to bid. South indicates (via double) the suit that West wanted to show, and North bids the suit that East might have shown. It's very possible that East-West get shut out of their heart suit, but at favorable vulnerability, they may still take their chances.

I'm not sure I should discuss the play, since the final contract could be diamonds, hearts, spades or notrump and notrump might be played by either direction! I don't think most declarers will be too happy about winning the contract, as the bad splits and relatively equal strength of the hands will cause most contracts to be difficult.
