Aggressive bidding by East can make life difficult for N/S on this one. North has a normal 1 opening bid and with 7-4 distribution, a good suit, and all honors in the two suits, the East hand is a good 4 overcall. South has a normal double of this. Is South's double takeout (i.e. a Negative Double ) or penalty? The ACBL convention card, and most intermediate players, specifically agree the level at which Negative Double are played, and this level will often be up to 3, 4 or 4. Higher doubles are therefore penalty doubles. However, most experts are a little more flexible. What do I mean by this? For most experts, there isn't an explicit level at which doubles switch from negative to penalty. Rather, the higher the level of the double, the more likely that the double will be based on general values, rather than promising specific distribution. On this hand, the South hand has an appropriate double of 4 whatever the N/S agreements, but whether North passes or not might depend on those agreements. If N/S play that South's double is still negative at this level, then North will likely bid on, with 4NT showing two places to play as the most likely bid. This will get N/S to 5. However, at most tables, South's double will either be penalty or flexible, and North will be a lot less likely to bid on, holding no extra values, and no special distribution.

As it happens, even with the trumps breaking poorly and offside, a contract can make 12 tricks if declarer takes the double finesse. If North is the declarer and East leads their singleton then declarer has an excellent chance to end up with 12 tricks. If instead East leads a high , the hand will be much trickier for declarer. Even with the preempt, I expect it will be hard for declarer to take the double finesse, which is right only if East has a low singleton which they chose not to lead, or a void. It looks more likely that declarer will end up with a and a loser and will be have to be careful not to lead too many rounds of trump, or they might end up with too few winners. A contract might work out poorly for East, especially against good defenders. Let's say South leads a and North wins the Jack and leads a high . Declarer can ruff and lead a , but a good defender will win this in the North hand immediately and lead a , allowing the defense to score two top s and a ruff, to go with their three outside winners. Off three will be a poor result for E/W assuming that the contract is doubled as N/S will never bid to or make slam.

  1. Stayman without a stopper

Whether West bids or not over South's 1NT opening, N/S are likely to end up in 3NT. After South opens 1NT, the West hand is a questionable overcall. Overcalls of 1NT should mostly be based on distribution, and the West hand is flat with a lot of losers outside of the suit. On the other hand, the suit is solid enough that the opponents might have a hard time doubling, the vulnerability is favorable, and the suit is s which is the most disruptive. If West bids, North will have to decide whether to make a Negative Double , or whether to bid Stayman. North basically needs to make two decisions on the hand, whether they are happy defending 2 doubled if South has a pass of a Negative Double, and whether they are happy to play 3NT if South promises a stopper. The void suggests that the answer to both of these questions might be "no", but it's matchpoints, so pulling a 3NT bid when partner has promised a stopper could be a disaster. If North does decide to just shoot for either 3NT or 4, how do N/S work out whether they have a stopper or not? The solution for most experts is a corollary of the popular "Lebensohl" convention. Under this agreement, North has two ways to bid Stayman. The first is to cue bid 3, and the second is to start with a 2NT bid, forcing South to bid 3, and then North rebids 3. One of these two approaches should show a stopper in the North hand, and the other approach should deny one, so that South will always know whether to bid 3NT. The bidding diagram here shows the "Fast Denies" version of Lebensohl , in which the direct 3 by North denies a stopper. South can't be thrilled with their stopper, but with 3334 distribution, bidding 4 doesn't look like a great alternative either. If either North or South decide they aren't happy with 3NT, then the final contract could be 5, 5 or 4.

As it happens, the layout of the hand is super friendly for N/S and any of their four game contracts will make, with slam actually making in any of the suit contracts. (Yes, it looks like there is a loser in a suit contract, but in theory declarer can play the suit for one loser by starting with a low to the 9 and later playing the Queen (a play known as an "intrafinesse"). In a 3NT contract, declarer won't like their chances, but will have little choice but to play for East to have both honors and West to have the Queen. There won't be any point in ducking the opening lead with ten s outstanding, so declarer can win, lead a to the Ace and a . East will play an honor, but declarer won't know the honors are doubleton, and will need to finesse the Jack to take another finesse and still have an entry back to run the suit. When the Suit breaks and the suit also comes in, declarer will end up with a surprising 11 tricks without any need to decide how to play the suit.

A lot of different final auctions on this are possible, with both E/W players having the possibility to get into the auction.North has a normal 1 opening, assuming both South and West pass. With the vulnerability unfriendly, partner a passed hand, no shortness and only a moderate suit, everything suggests that East should pass, but some will see a five card major and will overcall anyway. Assuming a more normal pass from East, South will bid 1, and it will be West's turn to decide whether to make a takeout double showing both minors. The vulnerability will again be an issue here. Furthermore, there is a good general principle to apply here. When the opponents have found a fit, then your side will also usually have a fit, and it often pays to be aggressive at getting into the bidding. Conversely, if the opponents haven't found a fit yet, then the odds are much reduced that your side has a fit, and it is less appealing to get into the bidding. So, I think West should pass 1. However, if North raises to 2 and this is passed back around to West, it would be a lot more appealing to bid if the vulnerability were favorable. Overall, it looks to me like 1NT will be a pretty normal landing place for N/S. East is likely to lead a high , which won't be the best start for the the defense. It isn't clear how the play will go from here, with declarer having potential tricks in all four suits, but communication issues between both hands. I expect the defense might end up with two tricks in each minor suit and a trick approximately, so that +120 might be about an average score.

1NTAll pass

West has one of the uglier 14 HCP hands I've ever seen, but with all of the low honors, the hand will play well in the likely NT contract. After East bids 1, N/S will certainly never get into the bidding and no one will have anything to say over West's 1NT rebid. North is likely to lead a , which won't exactly worry declarer who can win with the King and start on the suit. With the suit sitting well, the defense can't end up with more than their three top tricks in the minors and two tricks. However, to get their slow trick, the defense will need to switch to s right away. This is the primary reason why declarer should win the first with the King and not the 10 as it might encourage North to continue s. A good North defenders should question why declarer didn't put in the 10 of s even if they had nothing in their hand, but this inference will be lost on many defenders. Overall, holding declarer to eight tricks should be a good score for N/S, as I expect there to be a lot of +150 scores for E/W.
