There's little to comment on this deal. EW will get to their spade game. Declarer can come to 12 tricks if she ruffs two diamonds in dummy or two hearts in her hand.

Declarer must be careful to not draw trump prematurely as she does want the two ruffs. She will win the lead as quickly as possible, cash a high heart and ruff a heart. She can exit her hand with a club (If the ace has not already been played to ruff another heart. She can complete the task of drawing trump. She has 12 tricks in the form of four spades, two hearts, two heart ruffs, and three clubs. Oops!! That's only 11 tricks, good thing she has the A for 12.

South has an inglorious hand. She holds only eight HCPs and more than her share of those points are in jacks and a singleton queen. However she does have a five card suit which improves the value of her hand.

Regardless she should invite game with the eight points. North will accept gladly.

East will lead a club thus making declarer's task easier as this will guarantee a club trick for the offense. West will take her ace and continue the suit. It matters not whether East takes her king or plays low in anticipation of winning her king later and scoring her long club. Without tyhe club lead declarer must locare the 10 to score one trick in the suit.

Declarer is in the driver's seat and will get to dummy to lead the Q. This gives her two spades, one heart, five diamonds and one club for nine tricks and her contract. There is no opportunity to develop another trick without help from the defense. And they've already done enough to help declarer.

We can see declarer winning 11 tricks at quite a few tables. East will probably lead a heart given the bidding. She wants to keep her spades as a surprise for North although on this deal East's spades will prove to be irrelevant.

Declarer will win the heart lead and try the diamond finesse. West should hold up in an effort to give declarer problems with communication between the North and South hands. Declarer can now call for a spade from dummy, winning in her hand to play another diamond. West must win.She will exit a heart or a club. If she plays a heart declarer will win and play a club toward dummy. East can take her king. East must now return a spade least declarer take 11 tricks - one spade, three hearts, five diamonds and two clubs.

North opens and South makes a Splinter Bid supporting clubs and showing a singleton spade. Looking at her hand North knows her side has no spade losers. She holds solid hearts and a singleton diamond. She hopes her partner has good clubs which she should for her bid. Strictly speaking South promises club length however she also promises values and since she has a singleton spade and nothing in hearts (as North has the suit in her hand) South's values are in diamonds and clubs. So South should have a good club holding.

North can win the opening lead, draw trump and ruff two spades in dummy to make her 12 tricks.

Some East players will stretch and support partner's hearts however we think most will pass quietly as they hold long spades, North's bid suit.

West must choose between leading a spade or a heart as South has bid both of her suits. We don't like to lead unsupported aces however on this deal West may not have a better choice at the table.

So let's have West lead the A. Declarer will win the continuation and try the club finesse which will lose to West.

Declarer can win the return. If West tries a diamond declarer can play low from dummy and win in hand. Regardless of the return South has an interesting play in diamonds. South can try the diamond finesse. If West covers the Q South has the remaining diamond tricks. Look at what happens if West plays low. Declarer can now play to the A and ruff a spade to come to her hand. She can now ruff a diamond dropping West's king and establishing her suit.

North has no bid over West's 1 opener so she must pass quietly. South will balance with 2 and we think North's 2NT should show extra values, at least an opening hand as North can pass 2. South bids the game.

East will lead the 10. This has the effect of making declarer's 8 a second stopper in the suit (if she needs it.) Declarer will win her ace and immediately lead a club. The trick will likely hold.

Declarer can place the high cards in the West hand, else West would not have an opening bid. So whenever she is in dummy she will lead a spade toward her hand.

Declarer will come to nine tricks in two spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs.North ahs little chance for an overtrick as the defense will have four tricks, one spade, two diamonds and one club.

  1. New Minor Forcing

North will use some form of New Minor Forcing to inquire about three card spade support. When South shows that support North will bid the spade game.

We think East will lead a club and the defense will take the first two tricks. Declarer will win and draw trump. Her contract is not in jeopardy however the overtrick is not assured. We can see North leading a diamond toward dummy and finessing the J. This will give the defense another trick.

We can also see East leading a diamond which solves the suit for declarer and guarantees two overtricks. The diamond lead gives declarer four tricks in the suit and if the defense hasn't taken any clubs they will not get any tricks in clubs.

This deal might play better in hearts however we don't see many EW pairs bidding the heart game. We expect the field to reasonably be in 3NT.

Declarer will struggle and we think many will fail as the cards are not friendly to declarer.

That said, North does not have an easy lead. Both her suits have been bid by the offense. Declarer has six top tricks. She can develop one or two clubs depending upon the location of the A. She can develop a third spade trick if she immediately leads a spade toward the jack. (However this is not a normal play.)

Most likely West will play on hearts. (She'll have an easier time if North starts the suit and think this may happen at a few tables.) Declarer will cash the Q and lead a heart toward dummy. If North splits her honors declarer will win and continue the suit. The heart spots will allow the suit to come home with one loser. If North plays low we think declarer should play low from dummy. If South wins the trick declarer will have four heart tricks when she regains the lead. On this layout, ducking strikes gold allowing declarer to win four heart tricks. She can shift her attentiopn to clubs to establish a few tricks in that suit.

In he end declarer will have two spades, four hearts, one diamond and two clubs.

A rather elaborate auction will get EW to the notrump game.

Most play that a 2NT opener shows 20 - 21 HCPs so on this deal /west will open 2 and then bid notrump showing 22 - 24 HCPs. East bids 3 to check for a major suit fit. There are many variations of how to play this sequence and responses however West will show hearts and East will bid the notrump game.

The lead is irrelevant as West has 12 tricks. She has five hearts, five diamonds and two clubs. South will eventually score her A

We can envision South getting super frisky on this deal. She does have the values for her 2 response. While she has nine HCPs she does have heart shortness and club length. Either allows her to revalue her hand upwards.

North, for lack of anything better to do supports clubs. When the auction come around to South we think most will bid the club game rather than remain silent.

West will lead a heart and declarer will call for the ace from dummy. She will draw trump in two rounds and try the diamond finesse. When in dummy she will lead a spade toward her hand. East should play low. Declarer will win the spade and play a diamond to dummy to play another spade toward her hand. East will take her ace this time.

The play of the hand is over as declarer has 12 tricks.
