  1. 12-14 high card points balanced

It will be hard for most pairs to reach 3NT on this deal.

Auction: North deals and opens the bidding 1, South responds 1. East/West are silent throughout. North rebids 1NT showing a balanced 12-14 hcp hand. South with 11 hcp and good support cards AQx, J10x and 108x might invite game with 2NT, but North with just 13 hcp should not accept the invitation.

Play: The best defense on this deal is not obvious to East on opening lead. Most sitting in East seat will make an opening lead of the J. Maybe some will lead a spade, but few will lead the A and a second diamond which West ducks while still holding the A as a reentry. Once declarer (North) wins the first heart and leads on clubs, it is all over.

  1. Michaels Cue Bid _cuebid">Michaels Cuebid

All 6-5 hands are interesting deals, but this one is especially fun in that with the lie of the cards it will make 6 or 6. The Michaels Cuebid bid is typically a mini-maxi bid either showing a weak hand (mini) of say 8-9 high card points or a really strong hand of 16+ hcp (maxi). With an opening hand of 13 hcp some may choose to bid out this hand bidding and then . With a 6-5 hand and just 5 losers I think West hand is strong enough to Michaels.

Auction: South opens the bidding 1 and in the auction here West bids 2 as conventional Michaels Cuebid showing both majors. North supports diamonds and East with a singleton spade takes a preference of 3 and West bids 4 (showing the maxi hand).

44All pass

Given a different auction sequence, for example if South had been the dealer, it might be hard for North/South to reach game on this deal but with East opening the bidding, South has no issues getting to game.

Auction: East opens the bidding 1 and South with a monster hand of 17 high card points and just 4 losers first makes a Takeout Double . Some with West hand might bid 2 but with just 4 support points in the auction here passes. North, in response to South's TO bids 1. East has a good enough hand to bid 2 and South makes a jump invitational bid to 3. North with a singleton club has no issues bidding 4.

Made 5 — NS +450

Play: The play to make 5 gets tricky. East on opening lead cashes one club (A or K) and declarer (North) ruffs the second club. With hearts 4-4-4-1 it will be easily to loose a heart trick. In double dummy play declarer must immediately finesse West for the J and break open diamonds (see play here).

I love wild distributional deals. Some might pass with South's hand but preempting seems to be the norm these days, so South opens the bidding with a Weak Two-Bid of 2.

Auction: South opens the bidding 2 and West overcalls 3. North raises to 3 and East bids 4 (Law of Total Tricks). North, not to settle out too low, bids 4¹ and East/West get to 5.

¹ With vulnerability white vs. white some might sacrifice 5x.

Play: The key(s) to making 5 on this deal is to first, since South bid to show some values, play South for the missing K. And second watch for the clubs to see the J10 fall setting up the club suit for 4 club tricks pitching a diamond from dummy.

A nice pretty clean slam.

1: strong and forcing
2: positive for spades GF
3: control bid
