I hate the South hand, but in third seat, I will bid with worse hands than this. Partner's raise to 3 will keep the opponents out of the auction. If North tries to win it cheaply by passing, East will definitely balance with a takeout double. I would think about doubling 2 with the West hand, but opposite a passed partner, it's clear that the values on this hand are split and you don't have the right shape to be aggressive.

The lead will dictate how declarer has to tackle this hand. On a club lead, declarer will ruff a club in dummy. On a spade lead, declarer should try to draw trumps and then play on more spades. Note that the play with diamonds is not a choice, here. If you had AQ10 opposite xxx you would play low to the 10 and then low to the Q. Here, you only want to avoid one loser in diamonds so you should play low to the Q. If you had some side losers, you might try low to the 10 and then to the Q to try to get rid of something later on with the ace.

The North hand becomes much better once partner bids spades. Is it worth a cue bid? Maybe, but for me, it's just shy. When West balances with 3, North should show the secondary suit to tell partner where her strength lies. South will probably sign off in 3 and West might choose to push a level higher. If West does, then South should break out the red cards (much easier to do when partner has indicated diamond strength).

In spades, the friendly lie of the diamonds will allow declarer to take a lot of tricks. On hands like this, where the hand that is ruffing is shorter in trump, it is a good idea to postpone drawing trump as long as possible. Here, that is difficult with only the heart entry to hand outside of trump. One nice thing is that your opponents can't both attack trump and win their side winners at the same time. That gives you the tempo to test diamonds and find a pitch, even if the layout weren't so friendly.

The West hand may be on the light end of a 2-level overcall, but the suit is solid enough to make it worthwhile. North should cue bid to show a limit-raise or better. South is in the middle of a normal opening bid. I might like that I don't have any heart cards, but I definitely dislike the strong hand playing behind my minor-suit holdings. At this form of scoring, when in doubt, try to go plus.

West starts with heart, heart, and another heart that is ruffed and overruffed. Now declarer goes to North with the A and successfully takes a spade finesse. How should declarer continue? Certainly the auction would make me think that the K was with West. I think that would talk me out of low to the Q, but I might try leading up towards the 10 and hope West had KJ originally. When it works on the layout shown, I would nod as though I intended that all along. Never let partner know that you guessed right for the wrong reason.

When partner opens 1, the South hand increases in value from "worthless" to "almost worthless." Only the most fanatical of law followers would try a preemptive 3 bid at this vulnerability. Lucky for me, Larry Cohen doesn't sign my paychecks. Wait--he does? Maybe he's on vacation this week. West bids 2 to show some real values and now North might not take the hint and bid on. Over 3, East doesn't like any options. Pass might be better, but the shape is nice if partner has a 5th spade, and if partner only has 4, then at least it involves ruffing in the short hand. South now might have some worth, but probably stays silent. West and North have had enough.

After leading the A, North can't like much of anything. I think I would switch to a trump and hope for the best. Declarer needs to be sure to play on clubs before drawing all of the trump, but as long as she does that, the defenders will only take the two aces. 4-3 fits or Moysian fits can be a good spot on hands like this where A) the trump suit is strong and B) the 3-card trump hand has the side shortness. It also helps when trump split reasonably well.

East opens 1 with a good 11 points and at favorable vulnerability. West responds with 1 intending to jump in hearts later. East should rebid 2 to tell partner about her hand. I like rebidding notrump, generally (another thing to not tell my boss), but this hand is so dummy-oriented, it seems silly to steal the hand. What do I mean by that? If you have values like Kx or Qx, you usually want the lead to come into your hand so you can play fourth to the trick. With aces, there's no advantage to having the lead come into your hand, so it's ok to try to make partner declare. West will jump to 3 and that ends the auction.

South is on lead, and the 2 bid might talk me into a trump lead. North should duck (in case partner led from stiff J or Jx) and declarer will now have to guess well in order to make her contract. If South decides to lead the unbid suit, then declarer can do very well by guessing to put in the 9. The end result could be anything depending on how the declarer and defense go about their tasks.
