Pass4All pass

Some Norths will open 1 however we prefer the 1 opening with the intention of reversing into spades. North has a huge hand with great playing potential. Not only does she have two five - card suits but her singleton is a useless card. All her honor cards are working.

South will show a simple raise but that's enough for North to bid the heart game.

Some East players may overcall in clubs. We prefer to have a longer suit to overcall in a minor. Furthermore East has no outside values and her hand needs a lot of help.

East will lead the A and West will discourage. Seeing the Q in dummy it does not seem right to continue clubs.East will likely shift to a diamond.

When North sees dummy she will be optimistic that her contract is coming home. She expects a reasonable break in diamonds and trump. Declarer will win the opening lead with her K. Wanting to save her other diamond as a late entry to dummy we think many Norths will cash the A and ruff a spade to get to dummy. Declarer will now lead a heart toward her hand and play the K.

She might cash a high spade and ruff a spade. When she cashes the A it doesn't help the defense if West ruffs as all they will get is one club and two hearts.

Declarer is now in the driver's seat since she can continue diamonds and eventually when she gets to her hand she can play high trump.

 PassPassPass
1NTPass2NTPass
3NTAll pass

We don't really like West's 1NT opening bid however it does best describe her hand. East will invite the game and West will accept as she has a "good 16." She has a five card suit which is all the more reason to accept the invitation.

We expect North to lead a low heart. Although she has a weak heart suit, she does have an outside entry and if her partner holds an honor or two perhaps the defense can establish the suit.

Declarer has few entries to dummy. She has one entry in hearts and she can force at least one entry in spades.

West cannot come to nine tricks without the club finesse working. If the club finesse fails the defense will return a heart and then when declarer dislodges the A the defense will cash enough hearts to set the contract. (South must be careful and unblock the suit.)

Declarer must be equally careful to not block the clubs. So after winning the opening lead in dummy declarer should call for the J and play the 10 from her hand. She will continue clubs however after she takes the third round of the suit she has the 6 as an entry to dummy.

However prior to cashing her good clubs she should dislodge the A. The reason to do that now is that if declarer cashes her clubs, South can win the second spade trick and declarer will not get to cash her other good spade.

Upon playing spades declarer will win 10 tricks, two spades, two hearts, one diamond and five clubs.

West will pattern out her hand and bid game when partner prefers hearts to clubs.

North does not have a good lead. We think North will likely try a diamond. Declarer will win her ace and return the suit.

Declarer has few entries to dummy. She can ruff a diamond to lead a heart however she must first lose one diamond. If South wins the second round of diamonds she may lead a heart in an effort to reduce dummy's ability to ruff. If that happens it doesn't matter if declarer rises with her A or plays a low heart. She will bring the suit home for one heart loser. Declarer will lose one heart, one diamond and one club to make her contract.

If North wins the second diamond and plays a third round of diamonds declarer will win in dummy to lead a heart toward her hand. This however is declarer's last entry to dummy. To bring the heart suit home with only bone loser she must find the hearts splitting 2 - 2 or she must find North with a singleton honor. When she leads a heart from dummy South will play low. West must guess to rise with the ace and she will be a hero on this board.

West will keep bidding diamonds to whichever level NS force her. NS on the other hand will find their heart fit but go quietly as they have too many losers in the outside suits.

The defense will get one trick. Declarer will win as soon as possible, unblock the K, cash one high spade and ruff a spade. Now she can discard a losing spade on the A. she can ruff a heart to hand to draw the last remaining trump.

Note that if declarer exits dummy with a club South can ruff, promoting a trump trick for the defense. Declarer should count clubs and upon realizing that only one club is outstanding she should not try to get to her hand with a club but rather by ruffing a heart.

We don't get to support partner often enough with a singleton trump but this afternoon

If East's opening lead is a diamond the defense will win three tricks, one heart and two diamonds.

On the other hand if East leads something other than a diamond declarer has the tempo on the deal and will score overtricks. She will win the lead, taking the A if necessary and draw trump. She will play four rounds of trump, letting West have her heart trick. Declarer can win the return and now she can cash five club tricks making 12 tricks in all.

Some players like to bid notrump on deals where they have no fit with partner. This is usually not a good tactic as communication between hand is often difficult.

As has happened earlier this afternoon, North will pattern out her hand and South will support with a singleton honor.

It appears that North might have four losers however on this deal North will prevail and come to 10 tricks.

East will cash two heart tricks.IF East switches to a spade in order to prevent a heart ruff declarer will win in dummy, cash two high diamonds and discard two losers. She can come to her hand with a club and draw trump. Her J is a winner and she has one trick to lose.

If East continues a third round of hearts declarer can ruff in dummy, cash her top diamonds discarding two clubs. She can come to her hand to draw trump. On this line she will make an overtrick.

If East exits a club after cashing her top hearts declarer will win to ruff a heart high, cash her top diamond discarding clubs and and ruff a club tog et to her hand. She can now draw trump and again she will make 11 tricks.

West will show a Limit Raise according to partnership agreement. Some pairs use Bergen Raises, others jump to the three level. Some play Limit Jacoby in this situation and others will temporize and then jump to the three level. Regardless of methods everyone should end in 4.

The defense is helpless on this layout. Both the A and the Q are placed so that declarer will win those finesses. Even if East eschews the club finesse and cashes the AK followed by a club ruff, the favorable split allows declarer to score all her clubs.

We don't see many Souths unilaterally playing is spades when they know their side has an eight card heart fit.

East will lead a high diamond. West will take her ace and shift to a club.

Declarer will win in dummy, and probably lead a heart., finessing the 9. She can now cash the A and ruff a club, followed by two high spades discarding a diamond from hand. SHe now ruffs a spade and ruffs her last club.

She can now cash her K which West will ruff however declarer has the last two tricks.
