  1. 15-17 high card points balance d

This week starts off with a ho-hum auction, the interesting part of this deal is in the play.

Auction: East with a balanced 16 hcp and 6½ losers opens the bidding 1NT and with the balance of points evenly distributed South - 8, West - 7 and North - 9 1NT gets passed out.

Play: South on opening lead has a natural lead with the Q which East wins wins with A and starts on spades. As long as declarer (East) hold the A then tricks need to be set up, spades look like the best opportunity. When North wins the K, North has the opportunity to switch to clubs holding KQJx, but like a good partner returns a heart. Which East wins with the K and leads another spade giving up two heart tricks to set up two spade tricks. East can now win 2 spades + 2 hearts + 4 diamonds + 1 club for 9 tricks, making 3.

  3. control in clubs (implies good hearts)

Bidding 6 on this deal may seem hard but if you look East has a singleton diamond and West a singleton club which mean East/West is playing with only a 28 high card points deck.

Auction: West opens the deal 1 and East with 12 support points bids 4 as a game forcing Splinter. West with 18 support points bids 4 as a control bid slam try and East bids 5 as a control bid. West now bids 6 knowing all the partnership points are working.

  1. shows better than opening values

The key to game on this deal is North finding a way to show his values.

Auction: West opens the bidding 1 and North with just 15 high card points makes an overcall of 1. East might make some preemptive bid in clubs, but passes here. South with 9 hcp and 10 support points might make a limit raise bid of 2 but as North is an overcall, South just raises to 2. West passes and North now shows his values of 18 support points with 3and South on a maximum for the 2 bids 4.

  1. weak jump overcall
  2. extra values
  3. slam try

Unlike Board 2 which was a risky slam, most pairs should get to some slam on this deal, probably 6NT. After North passes, East with 15 high card points and a balanced hand could easily open the bidding 1NT, in which case 6NT will be easy to reach. But in the auction here we are going to have East open the auction 1 and with 6 losers plan on rebidding spades.

Auction: East with 15 hcp opens the bidding 1 and South makes a weak jump overcall of 2. West with 17 hcp could easily bid 3 as a forcing cuebid, but East might take this a Western cuebid , so West bids 3 as natural and forcing. East now shows the 6 loser hand values with 3. Over 3 West could bid 3NT but the auction might end there and West is thinking slam, and thus, West bids 4 East 4, 4NT - 5, 5 - 5, back and forth until West bids 6NT. With only a 5-2 fit in diamonds and 5-3 fit in clubs but missing the Q, the partnership just can't reach 7 or 7.

  1. 2/1 GF
  2. 4 spades and good values
  3. RKC Blackwood
  4. 2 keycards with the Q

This should be an easy slam to bid. After North opens the bidding 1, many will have South make a Jacoby 2NT response, but in the auction here there is no reason to hide such a beautiful club suit so we are going to have South first make a 2/1 bid of 2.

Auction: North opens the bidding 1 and South with a monster hand of 17 high card points , 19 support points and just 5 losers bids 2 as 2/1 Game Forcing bid. North rebids 2. South bids 2 which show a strong hand and North bids 3. South bids 3 which shows extra length. North bids 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood and South shows 2 keycards with the Q. Pretty easy for North to bid 6.

Made 6 — NS +980

Play: After East leads the A, making 6 is pretty easy.
