Neither side will be able to judge with confidence how high they should bid and whether they should be sacrificing over their opponents last bid. North has a normal 1 opening, and South can eke out a 1 response. West should overcall 1. With shortness and such a prime hand, North is worth far more than just a raise to 2 despite holding only minimal opening HCP. 3 should promise a hand that is unbalanced with about 13-15 HCP. With 15-17 HCP, North would have opened 1NT if balanced, and would be strong enough to bid game if unbalanced. With a weaker opening bid like 11-12 HCP and an unbalanced hand, North would bid only 2. Some pairs might play that 3 shows 18-19 HCP with four card support (possibly without a stopper), but I think it's easier to just cue bid 2 with a hand like that, so that partner has a better idea of the nature of the 3 bid, especially since the opponents might well not be done bidding. Indeed, on the actual hand East is likely to bid 3 with four card support and 9 HCP, despite holding tepid 4333 distribution. With so much of North's values in s, I think they will often be bidding 4 over 3. Neither East nor West will be able to double this, and they will be left with a choice of passing and hoping that 4 is going down or bidding 4 which is likely to be the correct choice if 4 is making. Certainly E/W aren't going to feel good about their choices over 4 if the bidding goes as shown.

As it happens, N/S would make 4 if South's suit were headed by the 9, and might still make if the defense isn't careful. The defense needs to force declarer to ruff s in the North hand, setting up a trump trick for East, otherwise declarer will be able to set up the suit while also pulling trump. This defense won't be immediately obvious to the defense, and if West leads a and switches at trick two, then also leads a minor suit when in with the trump Ace, then declarer will have a chance. Since 3 is cold, and it's hard to see how 4 can go off more than one, 4 will be a good choice over 3 even if it gets doubled. Any E/W pair who decide to bid 4 will have an uncertain fate, as it won't be clear at any particular table whether declarer would have made 4.

N/S can make it hard for E/W to find their best spot on this hand, and in fact, N/S might be able to keep E/W out of game entirely. Some East pairs will open 3. If they do, South will not have a clear bid. 3 would show far more HCP and so they will probably have to pass. West has an easy 3NT bid opposite a 3 opening, and South might back in with 4. If East passes, South will have to decide whether to open 2 despite holding four s. Many players are reluctant to preempt with a side four card major, and if South passes, most E/W pairs will be able to get to 3NT. The most common start will be for East to pass and South to open 2. West has a normal double and North will need to decide whether to bid 3 or 4. It's a close call, but in order for 4 to be right, it is likely that both of North's red Kings need to cover a loser in South's hand and the doubleton needs to provide a ruffing value. If North's were singleton, or the Jack were the Queen, then I think 4 would be more reasonable, but here it looks like too much. With a six card suit, East might bid 4 over a 3 bid by North, but even if they pass, or North bids 4, West is strong enough to double again when it comes back around to him. Opposite a second takeout double, many East players will simply bid 4 without thinking much about it, but I think this is an underbid. East actually has a good hand on the bidding, and should expect that 5 will have play opposite most West hands.

As it turns out, with the King onside, 10 tricks can be made in NT. However, if North leads a , declarer can win the Queen and lead the suit back towards dummy's A8 to set up a third trick and make 11 tricks. If North instead leads a , declarer might not want to risk the finesse late in the hand unless they get a good read on the opponents discards. If declarer is playing a contract, they must be a little careful with the suit. Declarer can make it home with 11 tricks in several ways, either by stripping the majors before leading s, or by being careful in playing the suit, but there are also ways to go wrong and end up losing two s and one . Most thoughtful declarers should be able to make 5, so getting to game in the face of the opponents bidding should be a good result.

  1. Game forcing, says nothing about s

Standard bidding methods could prove exceedingly awkward for East on this hand. After the bidding starts 1-1-2, East won't have an immediate way to show a game forcing hand with s. Some advanced pairs might be able to do this at a low level, but for most pairs, they will have to start with a "fourth suit forcing" bid of 3, and then support s by bidding 4, which has the danger that E/W can't easily play in NT when it's right. Even if you aren't playing complicated agreements on auctions like this, one approach that I like is for a jump to 4 over West's 2 bid to be something known as "Optional Keycards". Under this agreement, West can bid 4 over 4 to show no slam interest, and all bids higher than 4 show slam interest in s and indicate how many keycards West has. One of the advantages of this agreement is that when West shows no slam interest in s, East can bid 4NT to play, allowing E/W to still play in NT except when a slam is likely. With this approach, on this particular hand, the bidding would go 1-1-2-4-5 ( slam interest with two key cards, no Queen of s) - 6. This is, of course, far from a standard agreement, but there are many auctions under which bidding four of a minor as Optional Keycards is a highly useful agreement, and it is worth looking into if you are an advanced pair.

In a 6 contract, declarer will have an easy time on the lead of the Jack as long as they are careful. Declarer will lose the Ace, and eventually pull trump, ruffing one . When the suit doesn't break, declarer will eventually be forced to take the finesse which will work. The only pitfall for declarer is if they lead a to the Ace before they find out that the suit is breaking, but this would be a clear mistake on the hand. A lead by North forces declarer to immediately decide whether to take the finesse, or play for s to be split 4-3. I expect many players will go wrong on a lead, but I also suspect that most North players would lead a against 6. In a NT contract, declarer should be able to make eight tricks in the red suits, one and two tricks, and might make 12 tricks if North pitches a on the run of the suit. However, the bidding should make it easy for North even if West is the declarer, so +660 should be a common score.

It's not at all clear that E/W can get to their best spot of 1NT declared by East on this hand. One possible bidding sequence is shown, but it isn't likely to be a common sequence. After East opens 1, South will face a choice between overcalling 1 or doubling. Both approaches have advantages. In general, I think that doubling with 5-4 in the majors is better if your hand isn't strong enough to be sure you will get to bid again later, and also assuming that the five card major isn't significantly better in strength. This isn't a universal opinion, however, and it mostly comes down to partnership style and agreements. If South bids 1, West will probably double, and it's not clear what the final contract will be, as 1 doubled by South, 2 doubled by North, 2 by N/S, 1NT by E/W and 2 by E/W are all possible contracts. Of the likely contracts, only 2 by N/S and 1NT by E/W can make, so any plus score is likely to score well in either direction, and many of the matchpoints will depend on whether declarer is able to make extra tricks in whatever the final contract.
