This auction shown relies on Texas transfers. "But Larry," you say, "you didn't use a Texas transfer." One of the most important parts of playing Texas is that when you choose to transfer and then bid game in the same suit, you are showing a hand that is mildly invitational to slam. Here the West hand doesn't have enough to insist on slam, but would like to be in slam if partner has some aces and some spades. The East hand has some aces and some spades and should bid slam. Asking for keycards here will just give your opponents a chance to make a lead-directing double as it's unlikely partner has no keycards and interest in slam.

The lead for South is far from clear. I hate to lay down aces against slam, although finding partner with the K is possible. It turns out to matter a lot, as declarer has only 11 tricks unless a red suit is led. On a black-suit lead, declarer would need to guess to finesse in diamonds to make the contract, and there's no reason to do that. The best line is to try dropping the doubleton K (unlikely, but possible) and then hoping that the A is onside after pitching a heart on a club.

All pass

South opens 1 with a shapely hand. West's overcall is borderline, but partner is a passed hand and the vulnerability is favorable. It's best to bid now to stop partner from doing something bad like making a delayed preempt in spades. North bids 2 with a strong hand and East supports with support. 3 would be non-forcing, and although the South hand wasn't the strongest to start out, it has become much better with the auction and should bid game.

The play in 4 is difficult due to the bad trump split. On a diamond lead and continuation, declarer will have some difficulty handling the trump suit. If West doesn't bid 2, East may very well lead a club, in which case declarer should pitch a diamond on a club and probably make in spite of the bad spade split. Aggressive overcalling can make the auction harder for the opponents, and it also makes defending much easier for partner so consider doing it more frequently.

West opens 1. Don't upgrade to notrump with 9 cards in the majors or with a hand with such weak values (queens and jacks). North's 1NT call would anger my former partner, David Berkowitz, who hates bidding notrump with Axx. He would have doubled, and that would have worked out much better. East's double is a bit aggressive, but partner's vulnerable opening should show real values and East knows what he will lead against 1NTx. Knowing your lead should be a factor when you consider whether to penalize your opponents.

North won't have much fun playing this hand. It's hard to see declarer winning more than the four tricks owed him, though East-West may have some difficulty discarding on their winners (a good problem to have as a defender). One of the great pleasures in bridge is to double your opponents for 500 or 800 when you don't have a game. Don't make the mistake of pulling to 2 with the West hand as you are unlikely to find a game, and if partner thinks you are beating 1NT, your extra values will be a nice bonus for defense.

These high-level competitive auctions are always difficult. West is too strong to start preemptively, so he should open 1. North has a maximum overcall, but I would bid 1 to start. If the minors were reversed, I would double. East makes a Negative Double and then South has to decide what to do. The South hand's distribution makes it worth 4, even vulnerable. West now bids 5. North might think about 5, but the Negative Double behind those hearts makes double seem a better choice.

Unlike Board 3, this time the doubler has no appealing opening lead. If North tries to do anything too cute, he might not wind up with all of his tricks. As it is, the defense is only entitled to three aces. East-West should be happy about the result since North-South can make a lot of spades. This is a good hand to be fearless. Anyone who sold out to a diamond part score or spade game will get a bad result.

I don't like preempting aggressively when vulnerable. It's too easy to go minus 200 when your opponents belong in a partscore so I would pass the North hand to begin. After two passes, South will open with 1 and West should overcall 1NT with 16 HCP and diamonds controlled. North can now bid 2. I wouldn't do this with the minors the other way around, but if partner has long diamonds, you can escape to 3 should things go wrong. Depending on methods, East might be able to use lebensohl , but playing standard, 3 would show too good of a hand. South passes and West should balance with a takeout double which allows East to bid 3, ending the auction.

South doesn't have a standout lead, and might try either minor (or even an aggressive lead of the A). If South leads passively (not the A) then declarer has to make a lot of guesses. The Q looks like it could be from QJ10, which would be my lead regardless of partner's bidding. Still, there's a slight inference about the A--that it could be in South. The auction also points to South having the majority of the points, although third seat openers could be a little lighter than normal. Whatever you decide, it's important to have a plan for the hearts before drawing trump. This is a board where finding a plus will be a good result for either side.
