This week starts with maybe a little controversy, North has a nice 6-card heart suit headed by the AK but no supporting intermediates AK8xxx. Under new Open Chart* guidelines North's hand with 10 high card points and and 9 cards in two suits meets the average strength* definition, i.e., it would be legal to open North's hand 1 ... but for me is not the best descriptive bid of North's hand. Maybe change the Q and J for a supported king like K10x and I might consider opening 1, in the auction here, North opens 2 as a Weak Two-Bid.

ACBL Open Convention Chart applies in any event with no upper masterpoint limit and is recommended by ACBL for most open club games.
Average Strength is a hand that has at least 10 hcp or meets the “Rule of 19”.

Auction: North deals and opens the bidding 2 and South with 12 support points including a 9-card fit in hearts J109x, AKJxx as a source of tricks and shortness in clubs bids 4.

Play: The defense of this contract is not hard, East h as a natural opening lead with the K and when West ducks the heart, it is not hard for East seeing dummy singleton club and AK to find the switch to the diamonds. East/West win 1 club and 2 diamonds, making 4.

  1. natural and invitational

When you count up points, 4should not be a hard game to reach. Once North/South find a fit in hearts West has 15 support points and East has 13 support points.

Auction: West opens the bidding 1 and East responds 1. Playing 3-card raises, West raises to 2 and East makes some kind of invitational bid maybe 3, but in the auction here 3 as natural. West with good club support and 15 support points accepts to 4.

Play: In the play of this deal it gets tricky many will go down in 4. South makes the opening lead of the 8, finessing the J and declarer (East) wins in hand with the K. When declarer sees 5 clubs in dummy and 4 clubs in hand the 8 must be from shortness, and thus, quickly plays three rounds of hearts first leading the J from hand, looking like a finesse for the Q. South ducks the first heart looking to set up his second heart trick. When South wins the A South leads a diamond to partner's A which which he returns to East K. By preserving the A in dummy East can now run off clubs letting South take his remaining heart trick whenever he wishes, making 4.

Play: With the opening lead of the 7, this becomes a sweet deal to play. Declarer (North) wins the A in dummy and takes the spade finesse, losing to the king but setting up two spade winners in the AQ. Now North can play clubs to trump dummy's high intermediates 1098. West can over trump once with the J.

Play: North leads the 2 on opening lead which declarer (West) wins with dummy A and immediately finesses for the K loosing to North. North returns a heart which West trumps and cashes the A. West now cashes three rounds of diamonds, crosses the dummy's A and plays the 10 pitching a club. 4 can only be beat if North leads a club away from the K.

I try each week to pick outs some interesting deals, including slams, I think I will get questions on how to bid or play. When North opens the bidding 1NT and subsequently shows/implies spade support South with 19 support points MUST find slam.

Auction: North deals and with 16 hcp and a balanced hand opens the bidding 1NT. Some with East hand might overcall 2, but this should not deter North/South in this auction. South with an equally awesome hand bids 2 as a transfer to spades. Some with North's hand might show a super acceptance bid showing 4-card support and maximum values which will surely get the partnership to slam, but in the auction here, lets let North just accept the transfer with 2. East/West are silent here throughout.

After North's acceptance of 2, South splinters with 4 and now the key bid in the auction North's bid of 5 shows a spade fit and the A (cant be a void). South makes a control bid of 5, showing the A. North bids 5 with nothing else to show and South bids 6.

Play: In the auction here it is not unrealistic for East to lead the A thinking not to let South's singleton in hearts get away, but last week I got a complaint about leading honors against slams so let's let East lead the J (or J). .The play for 6 is not difficult, declarer (North) treats the play as a Dummy Reversal (as in the trick-by-trick play here) ruffing three hearts in dummy pulling spades and then giving up either a club to East or a diamond to West, making 6.
