I admit that with a good six card suit, I would bid with the East hand over 1, even though the rest of the hand is pretty poor. The hand would be significantly better if the King were in s instead, but the suit quality is so good that 2 seems normal. South has four card support, but with a 4333 hand, it is usually best to bid as if you have only three card support, and a simple raise to 2 looks best. West will also be able to raise in s and it will be up to N/S to decide whether to compete to 3. The North hand would be better if the Ace were in another suit, although at least the E/W bidding makes it less likely that South has wasted honors. With 5-5, it is usually right to be aggressive in competing once your side finds a fit, so North can bid 3. If North passes, South will be forced to decide whether the fourth trump is sufficient to compete 3, despite the flat nature of the rest of the hand. E/W will have to decide whether to compete to 4, or whether to hope that they have been successful at pushing N/S too high. Neither side has a clear penalty double of the other at any level, though I think South should double 4, as they hold two Aces. As it happens, careful defense will hold declarer to eight tricks in a contract, though it's possible that the defense will err and set up a trick for declarer allowing a loser to be pitched. 4 doubled will thus be a good result for the defense if they defend well, but otherwise will be a good result for E/W. 3 should have only four losers, unless declarer starts trump by leading low to the Queen.

All pass

All roads seem to lead to 4 declared by South on this hand. Although a 5422 hand is not a specific reason to not open 1NT, it's a lot less attractive when both suits are major suits. On this hand, the South hand is too strong anyway to open 1NT, and with almost all of their honors concentrated in the long suits, should be happy to open 1, planning to rebid 2 next if North doesn't raise or bid 1. With 10 HCP, it might look like North should make a limit raise, but with several of the HCP in Jacks, and a 4333 hand, the hand is probably only worth a 2 bid, especially if your partnership likes to open light. Over 2, South might make a natural and forcing going bid of 2 or might just jump straight to 4. Over a 2 bid, North has an easy 4 response, as North is both maximum for their 2 raise, and has great fitting cards in s. Against a contract, West will lead a high and all the pressure will be on the defense at this point. Most experts pairs will play that East uses suit preference when dummy can win the next trick in the opening lead suit, but many will also play suit preference when it is obvious that cashing another high card will set up a Queen in dummy, as on this hand. The danger of this agreement is that East isn't able to show their length, which would be crucial if East had a doubleton. If East is able to play a small showing a preference for s, the West will find the right switch of a at trick two. If East has to show length, then West will have a harder decision to make, particularly if South has never bid s. If West does switch to a , the defense will easily get their three tricks, but if West continues s, or switches to a major suit, declarer will have no problem pulling trump and leading a towards the Queen setting up a pitch for their loser. The score table will be full of +620 and +650, and my best guess is that more people will make the overtrick than not, so that E/W should be well rewarded for their defense if they switch to a at trick two.

  1. Weak

E/W have a number of ways that they might get into the auction, but the bidding shown will make it difficult for them. Even conservative opening bidders should be happy to open the South hand, with support for three different suits including both majors. South even has the right amount of defense for an opening bid, so there really isn't any reason to pass the South hand even if you play solid, old fashioned 13 HCP opening bids. One of the few areas where experts tend to be more conservative than the average club player is when making two level overcalls. West has enough HCP and the suit is good quality, but a two level minor suit overcall should usually be based on a six card suit, or a better than minimum hand, and West has neither of these. The vulnerability is also forbidding, and I would expect most expert players to pass the West hand. On the actual hand, if West does overcall 2, East might well get their side to 3NT. If West passes, North will have to choose between raising to 2, or making a weak raise if they have one available. Some N/S pairs will be using a bid of 3 to show a "Mixed Raise" and will be forced to bid only 2. Both East and West might act over a 2, although if East passes, South might make a blocking bid of 3. In any case, it looks every difficult for E/W to get to 3NT, if West doesn't overcall originally.

In a contract, declarer will almost always lose two tricks in each black suit. A contract looks like it will also have four normal losers, but there is at least a small danger for the defense, particularly if West is the declarer. Let's say that North leads a . Declarer can cash two s, pull three rounds of trump and then lead a to the Queen. South will win and have to decide what to do next. If South leads two high s this will blow up one of the defensive tricks. Some careful thinking about West's possible distribution should make it clear that a low switch will really only hurt if West's hand is specifically Axx Qxx KQJxx Jx, and even that hand is impossible if South is paying attention to North's play on the second round of s, unless N/S make the same lead from Qxx as they do from Qxxx. It will still be the case that some defenders are unable to hold a contract to nine tricks. If E/W are in NT, nine tricks are easy, and making an overtrick will be rare, but will also be basically irrelevant, as E/W are likely to have a top anyway if they bid to 3NT.

All pass

If East opens 3 in third seat, then fortune will favor the bold South players who stretch to bid 3NT. With the friendly layout of the suit, 3NT is cold. Even if South is forced to lead s from the South hand, the correct play is to lead the King, hoping to pin the singleton Queen and that play will work out well on this hand. If declarer instead starts s from North, it will get a little trickier, as they will have to decide whether to play East for a singleton Queen or not when they lead the second round of the suit. However, unless the defense has started with a lead and set up three tricks in that suit, even a misguess in s will not set declarer, as there will be three s tricks, five tricks in the red suits and the King. Top scores will go to those who are in 3NT, and make the right play in s and end up making an overtrick to go +630. A contract has six losers, so even if East is doubled (which seems unlikely), it won't score as well for N/S as playing the NT game.

Once North opens the bidding, South should drive to slam no matter what West does. It seems like the only relevant questions is whether N/S will end up in NT or s, but in reality, there will be some pairs who don't end up in slam at all, perhaps fearing that they are off the top two tricks. The bidding shown is one possible route to 6NT. If South doubles, instead of bidding 3 over West's 2 interference, then North might show their three card support, and N/S are more likely to end up in 6. Getting to the NT slam will be key on this hand, as 6 has a very good chance of encountering a ruff and going down. 6NT on the other hand will make an easy 12 tricks, as the layout ensures that declarer can't go wrong in the suit, even if East doesn't lead it at trick one.
