All pass

Don't open 1NT with 9 cards in the majors, or really any 5-4 with a five-card major. You have an easy rebid and are often better off in a suit. East makes a normal takeout double and South's 3 bid is WEAK. It's important to discuss with partner how weak a "weak bid" is, if only so you know what to do with opener's hand. I like for non-vul weak bids to be hands that don't want partner to bid game unless they have a good 2NT rebid (or extra shape). The North hand, while good, isn't that strong, so should believe partner and pass.

Declarer has to lose a heart, a diamond, and two clubs. Declarer needs to be careful, though and not draw too many rounds of trump before playing hearts. On a heart lead, the winning line should be pretty straight-forward, but too many declarers look at both hands instead of just the master hand, thinking that they only have one heart loser until they have drawn all of the trumps. If declarer leads the 10 at some point, East should make sure to cover.

Yes the South hand has a bad suit without a lot of values overall, but the hand has very good playing strength, and you don't want to get shut out of the auction. West LAWfully raises to 3 and North cuebids to try to find a slam. South doesn't have to put down a dummy, so doesn't have to be too embarrassed about her choices.

With no finesses working, declarer takes only 10 tricks. With the West hand, the K lead seems better than a heart lead since it might set up tricks for your side, while a heart is unlikely to generate much. Norths who got too excited about their hand might wind up blaming their partner for the contract of 5-1.

If she were vulnerable, the South hand should pass without much thought , but at favorable vulnerability this is more than enough to bid (and if you don't believe me, check out board 5). North might explore for slam, but would need partner to have the exact right hand and even then might still be on a finesse, so it's better to not risk it.

What should West lead? Normally you don't lead unsupported aces, but on an auction like this where the strength is in dummy, it sometimes pays to be able to take a peak. On this hand it allows you to see the benefit of playing clubs or continuing diamonds on spades. If West switches to a club (or leads a club) declarer must guess not to take a finesse, but win and throw away diamonds. If the defense cashes two diamonds, then declarer can throw away clubs. The heart suit is going to lead to a loser for those without x-ray vision. Declarer should have followed the Rabbi's Rule: if the K is singleton, play the ace.

Bidders on this hand face many difficult choices. Should East start with 2? It's possible, but I'm not a huge fan of 2 auctions as they take up a lot of space. Holding a singleton spade, 1 isn't likely to end the auction, so it's fair to start there. West has to bid 1, but is dismayed when East jump-shifts. 3NT, rather than 3 is an attempt to get partner to stop bidding. 4 is a guess, and passing 3NT could be right, but 6-4 hands prefer to play in a suit.

If South leads a spade, declarer has to do a little math in her head. Which is more likely: the Qxx in North or North holding the A? You don't have to be a mathematician to take a guess here, but the A or the Q onside is about 50% and a 3-3 split in general is only about 33 percent, so the better play at trick two is to lead a diamond towards the king. When you have a hand with limited entries, try to find the best way to maximize that entry. Furthermore, you could get lucky and catch the Q singleton or doubleton later on. On this deal, the only suit that behaves is the club suit, leaving declarer with two diamond losers, one club loser and one loser in hearts.

4All pass

What does a preempt look like? It depends on seat, vulnerability, and suit strength. While the East hand doesn't have honors, the 987 are great cards (if partner has the 10, you can take 4 heart tricks). That means this hand is worth a preempt at these colors (and only at these colors, please!). Opposite a passed partner, South passes to avoid trouble, and West should jump straight to game. With an 8 card fit, it doesn't pay to be greedy and try 3NT.

On the K lead, declarer needs to pause (after saying thank you to the member of the partnership who had her bid). If declarer immediately tries to draw trump, the defense will cash two spades and a diamond to go with the A. Declarer must get rid of the spade losers first. Declarer could play all four rounds of clubs pitching spades, the advantage of this is that it forces an opponent to ruff, which might be revealing. It might also shorten a hand with long trump. If South tries to cash a spade, declarer can play on hearts, revealing the bad split and get to dummy with a diamond to take a finesse. The defense can beat this line (double dummy) by switching to a diamond after ruffing the club.
