North's preempt does cause East some concern -- it would be nicer to be able to double and thereby bring spades into the EW picture, and the heart suit has obvious holes. However, passing seems overly cowardly, so the preempt does have the potential to put East at risk.

No problemo! West had just the tickets to make East happy. In fact, slam id not impossible from West's point of view, and a cue bid of 4 is clearly correct. East, perhaps regretting the overcall, scurries for safety with 4, and is relieved when West leaves well enough alone.

As it turns out, East could even withstand the storm of a Blackwood inquiry from partner, but will probably avoid that adventure.

Pass2Pass2
Pass2NTPass3
Pass3NTAll pass

3NT seems likely to take 10 tricks, the same as 4, and thereby achieve a better matchpoint score, so why does the computer say that 3NT is the limit? Well, one of the reasons is that the defense has the ability to duck the first club lead, so establishment of the six card club suit becomes problematical!

On a heart lead, seemingly best, South should win in hand, leaving the K as an entry. Then if the Q loses to the ace and a heart returned, the K wins the next trick and a third club sets up the remainder of the suit. The defense can play a third heart, setting up one heart trick, but the effort has taken three rounds of defensive initiative. Declarer wins three hearts, four clubs, one spade, and two diamonds (with the aid of the finesse). Ten tricks. But look at the difference one club duck makes! Now a diamond finesse gains one entry for declarer to lead a second club, but the defense prevails and leads hearts, and South is in the wrong hand -- a diamond can be played, but there is no further entry to the club suit once established!

So ducking the club makes all of the difference.

Declarer's other plan is to set up spades -- now it is best to lead the first heart from dummy in some cases, so win the K on trick one, finesse the T, win the heart return and play the A and another spade. Taking stock, there are now three hearts, four spades, and seemingly one club trick to be developed and two diamonds. Nice counting, but in the meantime, the defense has taken two spades, one heart, and one club, so nine tricks will be the limit.

Playing in spades, rather than notrump, there are just two spade losers and a club. After setting up one club trick for a diamond discard, the diamond finesse prevents the loss of any diamonds at all, and the only losers are one club and two spades.

2PassPassPass

Yes, East has a really nice hand, but the lack of a spade fit for partner's weak two bid is a major drawback. How sound are your weak two bids? If at all freewheeling or aggressive, then pass such hands as East's temptress. If you play sound preempts, either pass the West hand, waiting for a better suit, or pass with East's hand, following the general advice to reserve game tries for occasions when you hold HCP plus trump length totaling 17. Note that this Rule of 17 requires this many rule-points to make a game "try," not to BID game.

You pay your money and you take your chance. Many will find their way to 4, and a simple duck of one round of spades will ensure four tricks for the defense.

5 is the nicest bid in the diagrammed auction, designed to show the A (Generally don't initiate slam tries with a control bid at the five level without first round control) and slam interest, but no spade control.

Well, North has magnificent diamonds, great hearts, and that all-important spade singleton.

Bid slams that make!
