  1. Fourth suit forcing -- 4+ H; 13+ total points

This week starts off with an interesting Fourth Suit Forcing auction.

Auction: North with 13 high card points and 7 losers opens the bidding 1. East/West are silent throughout. South responds 1 and North rebids 1. South with 14 hcp and 6 losers know the auction is going to game, but bidding 4 right away will show a different kind of hand (Law). So South bids 2 as Fourth Suit Forcing (4SF) asking opener to further define his hand. North can't bid 3 (would show 3 hearts) or 2NT (would show a diamond stopper) so North bids 3 for lack of a better bid. Now South supports 3 (showing a full opening hand) and North with no extra values bids 4.

Play: With South bidding hearts, East makes an astute lead of the 2. The lead of a heart will give up a heart trick. With spades splitting 2-3 and the K on side it is not a difficut contract to play either taking the diamond finesse or setting up hearts for a diamond pitch on the Q.

This is just one of those deals. LOL

Auction: West with 17 high card points opens the bidding 1 and North overcalls 2. East passes smoothly. South bids 2 and West makes his first Takeout Double . North bids 2NT, maybe 3. South bids 4, West makes his second Takeout Double and East bids 5. South double for penalty and North takes it out to 5 which West doubles.

Everybody should get to game on this deal.

Auction: West with 14 high card points and 17 length points opens the bidding 1. Many with North hand might overcall 2, but in the auction here we will have North Pass. It should not matter whether North bids or not East/West should get to 4. In response to 1, West bids 1. If North does overcall 2, East would make a Negative Double . In response to 1 West might make a jump rebid to 3 but missing both the K and the J, in the auction here West rebids 2. After 2 it makes no sense for East to rebid spades and with 10 support points for hearts rebids 3 and West bids 4.

Play: On any lead other than a diamond declarer (West) has a chance of making 5 on the play of this contract. For example if North leads the J West might get to dummy in time to pitch a diamond on a spade North would ruff with the K, but North is always going to win the K. On the diamond lead timing is taken away and West should only make 4.

This is an interesting deal, some might play this deal in 4 (much safer contract) and some might play in 3NT making 4.

Auction: North deals and with 9 high card points and a decent heart suit of AJ9872 opens 2 as a Weak Two-Bid (W2B). South with 18 hcp bids 2NT as artificial asking North to further define his hand. Many partnership might play system responses, but in the auction here North responds 3 showing a Feature in clubs. South holding the KQx knows North must hold the A. In the auction here South masterminds the contract and bids 3NT assuming the partnership might make the same tricks in notrump as in hearts.

Play: On opening lead West leads the 3 which declarer (South) wins with the K. South immediately plays on hearts finding the K and then forcing out the Q while still holding the A. When East gets in with the Q, East plays his Q and leads a third spade. What saves this contract is North/South holding the intermediates 1098. East/West can win 2 more spades and when South wins he can cash out the remaining tricks. 4 was a much safer contract.

  1. preemptive
  2. Negative Double

This is a very interesting deal ... vulnerable preempts!!!.

Auction: West with 19 high card points and 5 losers opens the bidding 1. West with just 6 losers preempts 3 and East makes a Negative Double for hearts (East does not have the values to bid 3). West, knowing East has restricted values, does not try for slam but sits for 3x. North is vulnerable and West only needs to set this contract 2 tricks for more than he can make in a non-vulnerable game.
