Are there reasons not to preempt with the North hand? Yes, and I can hear people yelling at me from in front of their screens , but non-vulnerable preempts encompass variety of different hand types including this one. The spade suit is bad enough that you should feel comfortable telling partner only about hearts. South should raise to 3 and West doubles with a strong hand. East will bid 4 and West is afraid of going any higher without support from partner.

On a heart lead, declarer shouldn't have many problems as North can't do anything dangerous. If North continues a heart (and nothing looks better), then declarer ruffs and draws all of the trump. Before playing on diamonds, declarer should try a spade to the K. If this sneaks by, declarer will take an extra trick, but if South wins the A, declarer should try for the overtrick by playing a diamond to the Q. Sleepy Souths will allow an overtrick.

3Pass?

At favorable vulnerability, we open reasonable 12 counts. After 1 by West (don't raise clubs before bidding your major), some Easts will rebid 1NT and get raised promptly to 3NT. I don't like missing 4-4 spade fits, so I would bid 1 (particularly since my holding in the other unbid suit, diamonds, is weak). West makes a game-forcing 4th-suit bid and East's first action is to bid hearts, but after 3 nothing is easy. At imps, a final contract of 5 would be clearer, but at matchpoints East doesn't want to bypass 3NT. Playing in either 4-3 major suit fit turns out to be the best scoring result.

If East bid 1NT, West will raise to 3 and the East-West side will take ten tricks after the likely diamond lead (surviving a scary moment of leading the J). Double dummy says declarer can take 11 tricks in either major, and I believe it, though the play is easier in spades than in hearts with the bad split. At matchpoints, it's sometimes ok to play in a 4-3 fit if there is a clear problem in notrump. Here if spades were wrong, notrump would be down (down 3!) and either major would still be okay.

   2NT
Pass3NTAll pass

South, with all the 10s and aces could consider this a 22-24 point hand and open 2, but not many will. It's a good idea to ask yourself, after counting high card points, "Is this a good hand for x high card points?" This is a great 21 count (although 4-3-3-3 isn't the best). North should not use Stayman with a 4-3-3-3 hand.

West is faced with a difficult opening lead choice. Generally, with a 2NT opener on your right, it's better to be passive. Combined with the preference to lead majors against notrump, I would choose a heart, although which heart is a matter of partnership agreement. Declarer is short of entries for the spade finesse, but double dummy does better to save the entries for the long spade. The defense is best served by continuing hearts or exiting passively at all opportunities. It's a good illustration of the dangers of breaking suits.

All pass

This is one of those deals that could easily go wrong at the critical moment. After the first three bids, is 4NT asking for aces/keycards? It's dangerous if only one partner thinks so. Most experts choose to play this as quantitative, and choose to use 3 of the other major as a slam try in the major bid. South could have also driven to slam by bidding 5NT (pick-a-slam) instead of 4NT. The North hand should reject any invitation since this isn't a good 16 count.

East has a tough lead problem on any auction. Normally a diamond would be reasonable against 3NT, but if the South hand invited slam, it's dangerous to lead from an honor. Would you find a club lead, hoping to avoid a disaster? Declarer should be careful not to try hearts before setting up an extra trick in diamonds and spades.

West should cuebid hearts at the first opportunity, but when East signs off in 3, West should not go any further. Remember that overcallers (especially white versus red) could be very light, so don't bury partner on this type of auction.

The defense on this deal is interesting. After the first two heart tricks, North should win and needs to play diamonds, seeing the danger of the club suit in dummy. Playing a low diamond is the only chance to hold the contract to 3, as it forces East to make a diamond guess--guessing right yields 11 tricks and wrong gives declarer only 9 tricks. Cashing the A will safely hold the contract to making four, and playing a third round of hearts will allow declarer to take 11 tricks. A long threatening suit in the dummy should be a warning siren for defenders to get aggressive.
