South will be rewarded by keeping quiet, but there really is not much reason to bid, with scattered values and questionable suits. Instead, defending 4  should be rewarding enough, for ten tricks do not seem available to declarer, who must lose two spades, a diamond, and "something in the wash" in one of the other suits. There is just no path to ten tricks without a defensive assist.

North might contemplate a 3 NT response to 1 , ostensibly giving a choice between 3 NT and 4, the way many partnerships agree. But there are only nine tricks in notrump. In hearts there are eleven.

Case closed.

There is no bonus for having two trump suits, and North can describe a limit raise with four trumps simply in one bid, so ignore the spade suit. Bidding 1  and then driving the heart fit would imply a stronger hand with greater intentions.

The number of tricks taken in 4  depends on the position of the  A and the  K, nothing more or less. When one works, making five. When both work, slam would have been a good bid.

But the hand is rather too straightforward and the assets too limited to contemplate the antipercentage slam.

Flat board?

?

What is West to do? With 10 HCP, pass seems poor, but what else?

A Negative Double without four spades is generally frowned upon -- it is almost a religious requirement to have four spades for a Negative Double of a 1  overcall. But it might be best!

1 NT without a heart stopper might be contemplated, but surely not standard fare.

2  with only a four card suit is surely a no-no.

2  with only three clubs rubs the wrong way.

So is West's choice crucial on this hand? Probably not, but pass is out. West must make some choice to help paint a picture of values, important to partnership bidding and later defense. If you keep passing during the bidding, partner's picture of the hand during the defense will not have much chance of being accurate.

Here East will use West's action, no matter what it is (well, other than 1 NT), to continue competing in clubs until the contract is bought. And that is the correct result for EW.

PassDblAll pass

Here are some secrets: First, strong notrumps are subject to penalty doubles, not just weak notrumps. Second, folks who play strong notrumps generally don't worry about escape mechanisms or anticipate their need. Third, an idea that I have had some success with (and some trauma) is to double against 1 NT in the passout seat with 12-14 HCP -- basically showing a weak notrump. Then the partner of the doubler, the original second seat player, will know which side has the balance of points, and that any lead made will find some sort of tolerance or fit, good for the defense. (If second seat cannot stand to defend, then treat partner's double as a 1 NT opening bid, and employ Stayman and Jacoby Transfers. But with values, pass and defend!)

So here, West might have anticipated or at least employed escape tactics after the double, but many NS pairs will enjoy defending 1 NT doubled. As you can see from the computer's analysis, NS can make 2 NT even if EW have the opening lead.

1 NT doubled down 500 will be a top for NS.

Go for the throat!

If EW are playing Lebensohl , or one of its many variants, 3 NT will describe a hand without a spade stopper but with ample values otherwise to make game. That seems a handy device, but even without lebensohl, East is likely to bid 3 NT anyway.

Eleven tricks with the aid of the club finesse, but will declarer dare take the finesse when a spade is led? Well, after nine tricks are taken, North will have shown up with likely six spades, four hearts, and three diamonds, all face up on the table. How many clubs does that leave North?

Take the finesse!

If it loses to the singleton  K, North had a terrible overcall. Let that be a lesson to North! (one way or the other).
