  1. limit raise (or better) in clubs
  2. game values

This week starts off with an unusual deal - two opposing hands have long suits and opening values. So much in this auction depends on partnership agreements and subsequent bids. The analysis here starts with South remaining silent throughout the auction.

Auction: North deals and with 10 high card points , just 6 losers and a great heart suit AQJ1053 will most certainly open 2 or 1 as in the auction here using the new Open Chart guidelines for an opening hand. East with 11 hcp and a good club suit AQ108742 overcalls 2. In the auction here South is silent throughout the auction. West bids 2 as a forcing cuebid in support of clubs. North having expressed his values making an opening bid passes and East with 15 support points jumps to 4 and West with opening values bids 5.

In many auction North/South will compete in hearts. Over East overcall of 2, South with 5 hcp might bid 2 and in in many auctions North even if South passes might with a void in clubs rebid 3 over West's cuebid of 2. In either case N/S might get to 5 doubled or not, down 2.

ACBL Open Convention Chart applies in any event with no upper masterpoint limit and is recommended by ACBL for most open club games. Average Strength is a hand that has at least 10 hcp or meets the Rule of 19.

Some might not agree or like North's opening bid of 1NT, but it is the bid that best decribes North's hand and if North opens 1, North has a hard rebid problem.

Auction: North with 15 hcp a 4-4-4--1 hand with a singleton A opens the bidding 1NT. South bids 2 as Stayman, North responds 2 showing 4 hearts and South with 11 support points bids 4.

Play: East has a hard opening lead against 4, East might lead 7 or as in the play here the 6. With the lead of the 6 West misdefends this contract playing the Q, West seeing 3 diamonds in dummy, should play the A and return the Q. When East gets in with the A, East does not know to continue diamonds and thus, declarer (North) makes 5 in the play here.

  5. Roman Keycard 1430 Blackwood
  6. 3 keycards

This deal could be bid in two different methods to reach slam of 6. Some might consider opening East hand 1 with the plans to Reverse into 2 as a forcing bid showing 5 clubs and 4 diamonds. I think this is a good tactic and might make it easier to reach 6, but with 17 hcp and a semi-balanced hand of 5-4-2-2 with KJ many will treat East hand as balanced and open 1NT.

Auction: East deals and with 17 hcp and a balanced hand opens the bidding 1NT. North/South are silent throughout. West first makes a transfer of 2 to 2 and then rebids 3 to create a forcing auction. West could bid 3NT, but this might look like minimal values. This deal looks like it will be played in hearts so East bids 4 as a control for clubs and showing extra values. West bids 4NT as RKC 1430 Blackwood for hearts and East respond 5 for 3 keycards. West knowing East opening notrump has at least 2 spades and a finesse for the K might be required or might not have the K bids 6.

I'm not quite sure what to say about this deal. I think 6 is a good contract, my slam grue Klinger says to be in all slams that just requires a finesse.

Auction: After two passes North opens the bidding 1 and East preempts 3. A key bid in this auction is South bid of 3. West (grrrrrrr!) raises the preempt to 4 and North bids 4 a some kind of slam try. South has nothing to cuebid and should bid 5, but in the auction here makes a bad bid asking for keycards and when North shows 3, South bids 6.

Play: Not much to the play of defense of this contract. East/West have the right to win the A and K.

  1. preemptive

Ok a fun deal. Some may not preempt the bidding holding a 4-card major.

Auction: North deals and with 8 diamonds AKQ75432 and no one vulnerable opens the bidding 5. It is now doubtful South will bid his spades or west will bid his clubs.

Play: From double dummy analysis, the lead of the 3 will give East/West three heart tricks for down 1. But in the play here East chooses to lead the Q which gives declarer to pitches on the AK, making 5.
