  1. Mixed Raise, 7-9 HCP, 4+s

E/W are almost certainly doomed for a negative score on this hand. West is too strong to open 1NT and in fact is much closer to a 2NT opening, but for most will be a maximal 1 bid. East has a familiar hand type for those who have been reading my commentary regularly, the Mixed Raise. A Mixed Raise is a hand of about 7-9 HCP with four card or longer support for partner's five card suit, usually some shortness and some defense. In other words, a hand that is a mixture of a good raise with the desire to be somewhat preemptive. Mixed Raises occur more often than any other bidding concept that I comment on and most experts will have a Mixed Raise available in almost all bidding situations, often giving up a Weak Raise if necessary to retain the ability to make a Mixed Raise. One approach over a Major Suit opening bid is to use a jump in the "one under" suit to be a Mixed Raise (i.e. 1-3 or 1-3), saving the double raise of the suit as a weak raise. This is the approach shown here. Other approaches include using 3 to always be the Mixed Raise (Bergen Raise), and using the jump to three of the major as a the Mixed Raise. In any case, if you haven't heard of the Mixed Raise concept, or have them included in your bidding agreements, I strongly encourage you to research them further and add them to your bidding arsenal.

On this hand, everything is working out poorly for declarer. North is likely to lead the Queen, but even if they don't, they will have two more opportunities when in with the the Ace and the Queen. With the Ace offside and a guaranteed trump loser, off one is virtually guaranteed. If E/W somehow end up in 3NT it will be even worse, as there are six losers off the top and a seventh if declarer gives up a . The scorecard will be littered with -50 results for E/W.

Assuming South makes a takeout double of 1, E/W will do best to just start in on the penalty doubles. South's hand looks like a pretty normal double even at the poor vulnerability, especially since North is an unpassed hand. Some players will see a five card suit in the West hand and will automatically bid 1. However, it is usually better to redouble with hands like this, when you have 10+ HCP and a balanced hand. Bidding over a takeout double should be reserved for hands with less than 10 HCP, highly distributional hands with 10+ HCP, or hands with slam interest. If West does bid 1, E/W will land in 3NT. Assuming West redoubles, N/S will be in trouble as long as E/W don't let them off the hook. The general concept after a redouble in this situation is that with any reasonable four card holding in the trump suit, you should double the opponents. If neither partner chooses to double, then any bids should be forcing to 2NT.

With no four card suit, North won't be happy to hear West redouble. Should North pass and let South choose a suit? That would be reasonable except that not all pairs have the agreement that pass is simply neutral. Many experts play that pass here is to play, showing a good holding in s. One advantage of this approach is that with a hand like North's, you could choose to pass, putting pressure on East. Notice how much harder it would be for East to pass 1xx if the East and West suits were switched. Assuming North either can't or chooses not to pass, the best bid is 1. North is trying to escape undoubled and should choose their lowest three card suit if they have no four card suit. East has no reason to start bidding majors yet, and should give West the chance to double 1 which they will happily do. If N/S leave this in, it will be the worst possible result for them, as a contract is awful for North. A slightly better result is achieved if N/S get to 1, though East should happily double this. No matter what N/S choose, they are doomed to go off at least two tricks, so that E/W will do better by doubling than bidding 3NT.

1NTAll pass

After three passes at most tables, I expect East to scrape together a 1 opening bid. South will bid 1 and West will have to choose between double and 1NT. With no good support for either minor, double has hazards even though West would like to find a fit. In general, with a good stopper and four s, bidding 1NT is usually best, but with a poor stopper or only a three card suit, double will usually be best. Note that you should also not bid 1NT unless you have 8-10 HCP, as a 1NT bid in competition promises better than just 6-7 HCP. I like 1NT on this particular hand, but it probably won't matter as East is likely to bid 1NT even if West doubles, unless North decides to bid their suit.

In a NT contract, North can lead s and run the first five tricks, but South will be under as much discarding pressure as anyone else. North can exit a red suit and the defense will end up with six tricks, but declarer should be able to make all the rest of the tricks. It turns out that N/S can do better by declaring 2 than by defending 1NT. East needs to get off to a good lead to prevent 2 from making. For example, if East leads a , declarer can duck, and will eventually score two tricks and one trick to go with their five tricks. A neutral lead is likely to work out best, but in any case, declarer can always score seven tricks, and -50 will be a good score for N/S as it is hard to see how E/W can get too high unless East bids at the two level over a takeout double by West.

Bidding decisions abound on this hand, but it seems likely E/W will be able to bid to 4 most of the time, and both pairs will have to decide whether to bid at the five level. With first round control of two side suits and nice distribution, the West hand is almost too good to open a Weak Two despite holding only 9 HCP. Certainly pairs who like to open light will be tempted to open 1 with the West hand. If they open 1, North has an easy 2 bid, but if they open 2, it's a little more difficult for North. Bidding vulnerable at the three level should usually show a better than minimum opening hand. With a void, North certainly has good playing strength, but if South doesn't have a fit, the North hand isn't nearly as good. The suit is solid enough that I expect most experts would bid 3 despite the vulnerability and minimal HCP. East has an easy raise to 4 and South will be on the hot seat. With 11 HCP opposite a three level vulnerable bid, South will feel like they need to bid something, but should they double or bid 5? South will know that North is very short in s, and if the King were in another suit, 5 would be obvious, but here it isn't clear that 5 will make. On the other hand, facing a likely void, South can't like their hand defensively.

It turns out that N/S need to bid 5 to get a good score. 4 is cold and 5 has at most four losers. If the defense doesn't force declarer to ruff s or find their ruff, then 5 might even go down only one trick. Even off two doubled will be a good result for N/S, since 4 is an easy contract to make. Should E/W compete to 5? It would be more tempting for East to do so if they didn't have defensive values in the suit. As it happens, the defense must be careful not to lead s against a contract, as this would allow declarer to make 11 tricks. This will be especially critical if E/W have bid 5, of course. +650 looks like the best normal result for E/W and N/S will do quite well if they go -200 but even -500 should be above average.
