An "advance" is the bid by the partner of an overcaller. Depending on partnership agreements, new suit advances can be agreed as forcing, nonforcing, or constructive. Each choice makes a huge difference in the meaning not only of the new suit bids, but the meaning of related bids, such as jump shifts into new suits and cue bids. The general, "standard," meanings are that new suits are constructive (so not running for advancer's life) but nonforcing, perhaps 8-11'ish HCP and a good suit. The purpose of a constructive bid is to investigate the prospect of bidding and making a game. Of course, also, a constructive, nonforcing, new suit denies primary support for partner's suit, but should also promise a "tolerance" for the overcaller's suit.

North's 2 bid fits the criteria for a nonforcing but constructive advance, which South calmly and definitively declines with the 2 bid, confident that partner will put a couple of hearts on the table as dummy.

The heart contract will result in ten tricks because of the favorable spade, heart, and club fits, the latter being incapable of diagnosis during the auction. Hence, a game contract will be a rarity.

4 is invitational, not "Minorwood," because both East (2) and West (2) have made limited bids, capable of being passed by partner. Under those circumstances, asking for aces or key cards is logically inconsistent.

No, 4 is highly invitational, and West, with the A rather than, say, KQJ, has enough prime values to accept the try. The club minor honor and doubleton is a tilt toward acceptance as well.

When a partnership bids to the two level with a fit and stops bidding, it is very frequently correct to balance or bid directly by the opposing partnership. Here, West would be safe at the three level in clubs, and could bid, but in direct seat over the spade raise, 3 might be misconstrued, and if East were to balance in passout seat over South's 2 raise, then both bidding 3 by West and passing that call by East would take a confident partnership, indeed. Not really a crucial issue, however, for North would push on to 3, and that contract makes rather easily. Declarer counters a diamond attack with a club unblock and discard on the A.

12 tricks in clubs are not to be anticipated by EW, requiring both the falling trump lady and a favorable diamond position, along with spade discards.

5 is abundantly aggressive, and may well be all that is necessary for a great matchpoint score.

  1. Inverted. Support with support, get that part of the bidding out of the way early. A Splinter bid would be appropriate here, except that it is hard to convince partner you have TWO Splinter suits!

West's 4NT is a difficult choice -- not because of lack of values to justify a slam try, but because of the alternatives available from which to choose. 4NT sounds more balanced, but if the unbalanced nature of the hand were to be disclosed, better that it had been done starting with the first round. But we rather much approved the 2 bid, so are stuck with the consequences.

After the quantitative 4NT (East showed 18-19 balanced), pass looks right -- weak clubs, especially compelling a quiet ending.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

West made a borderline takeout double with very imperfect pattern, and East should be discouraged by North's bidding East's best suit.

If there is any justice, NS will fail in 2, for 2 and 1NT make. But 2 might make if the defense fails to thwart declarer's source of fulfilling tricks -- ruffs. So best defense seems to be to lead trumps often.

3 is invitational, of course, game forcing auctions expected to incorporate a Fourth Suit game forcing 2 call by East after West rebids 1. With three queens (quacky values), West will decline the invitation, hoping for a plus score, rather than a miraculous result. Matchpoints is often a game of practicality. Here's a good example.

  1. New Minor Forcing.

If NS lead hearts against 3NT, it will be necessary to duck once (Rule of Seven -- subtract the number of cards in the suit led -- duck that many times), and then play on diamonds. So long as the hand with heart length lacks the A, all is well.

PassPassPass

If EW bid more, there are two ways to lose -- being doubled, vulnerable, down 200 in 3 or more if higher, or by pushing the opponents into 3NT or 5. So the contested auction ending in 3 seems likely to occur. But will South always open 1? Surely passing is too timid, and 3 is a poor description of a constructive hand, so 1 seems best. However, the field will be peppered with 3 opening bids, enticing some Wests to enter the fray with inadequate resources, but they may get away with it. Mayhem may ensue in any direction after a preempt, so no predictions from here.
