  1. Takeout Double
  2. 10+ high card points

With ACBL's new Open Chart definition of an opening hand the game of bridge, as many of us have grown up to know and love, has hit a new low. Maybe I should just throw away my copy of Alan Truscott's The Bidding Dictionary defining modern standard bidding methods ... no, I think I'll keep it!

Auction: Some might consider North's hand a Near Average Strength hand and open 1 or maybe 2, but in the auction here North passes. After two passes, South with 13 hcp and 8 losers opens the bidding 1. West with 11 hcp and 4-cards in both majors makes a Takeout Double. North makes a redouble showing 10+ hcp and a willingness to compete. Typically most partnership will play responder's redouble says "I want the next bid". After East bids 2 and South passes, North bids 3. In the auction here with East passing initially and West holding just 12 support points for hearts East/West do not compete, but some might take 3 as a Law bid and compete to 3.

ACBL Open Convention Chart applies in any event with no upper masterpoint limit and is recommended by ACBL for most open club games. Average Strength is a hand that has at least 10 hcp or meets the Rule of 19.

Play: Despite missing the AK, 3 is not a hard contract whether East leads the J or the 8. East/West can win 1 heart + AK + 1 club or AK + 2 clubs, in either case declarer North can make 3.

  1. 1NT Forcing
  2. 3-card limit raise in hearts

This is a 1NTF auction where North/South should reach game.

Auction: North deals an opens the auction 1. East would like to get into the auction with 10 high card points , but there does not seem to be a legitimate bid opportunity. South makes a 1NT forcing bid and when North responds 2 (does not have the values for 2) South makes a jump rebid of 3 showing a 3-card limit raise. Some might make a 2/1 bid of 2 and that is fine, South has 12 support points for hearts. Either way North should raise 3 to 4 or the 2/1 auction will get to 4 anyway.

Play: The opening lead of the J put the 10 in East hand. Declarer (North wins the K in hand and leads his singleton club up to the K in dummy. When East wins the A he is stuck. If he leads another diamond, declarer has the 10 spotted. If he doesn't lead another diamond, declarer can pitch a diamond on the K

  1. Takeout Double

The double dummy analysis shows this deal will make 4, but you will need to be a mystic to make 4.

Auction: West deals and with 13 high card points and 7 losers opens 1. North makes a Takeout Double and East raises to 2. South bids 3 and West bids 3. North might compete to 4 but bidding 4 will over values his hand. If North competes to 4, East/West might compete to 4 and then drop the singleton K. North is best to let this deal be played in 3 and hope he can win this singleton K.

I didn't think this was a hard slam to bid but my computer analysis did. After 3 passes, West with 20 high card points , 4 losers and shortness has a legitimate 2 opening bid which might help some get to slam.

Auction: In the auction here West opens the bidding 1 with the plan, depending on partner's response, to make a descriptive rebid. North/South are silent throughout. East has a marginal 3-card limit raise but with the Q in a short suit decides to treat his 9 hcp as a simple response with 2. Some might consider West making a self Splinter in 4 but this limits West's values, West with 22-23 support points is 1) too strong to Splinter and 2) West does not know there is a 9-card fit in spades.

West makes a forcing rebid of 3 and West, now knowing the value of the Q shows his extra values with a control bid of 3. West probably has enough information now to go slamming, but makes one more effort with the control bid of 4, and East continues with 4 now clearly showing the A. West now bids 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood and when East confirms the A, bids 6.

This deal should be easy to get to 6NT, maybe even 6, but what about 7. East with 17 high card points and a semi-balanced hand could open 1NT and East/West will get to 6NT.

Auction: In the auction here East with 2 doubletons and great rebid of 2, opens the bidding 1. North/South are silent throughout. West responds 1 F1 and East Reverses into 2 showing a 5-4 hand in clubs and hearts AND creates a forcing auction F1 and promising a 3rd bid. West's 3 shows a club fit and East 3NT denies 3-spades. West bid of 4 some might play as Gerber , but in the auction here 4 is RKC Minorwood for clubs. East shows 3 keycards and West bids 7.

Play: This is not a hard contract to play. After winning the opening lead of the J , declarer crosses to the AK and leads a club which drops the Q. Now all declarer has to do is to trump a small heart in dummy with the 9 and lead clubs to play out the hand, making 7.
