  1. Game forcing (A, K or 2 Qs)
  2. Relay to 2 (Kokish)
  3. Forced
  4. 24+ HCP

South has a very powerful hand, but will need to trust North to not get too high on this hand. After South opens 2, responses and follow-ups will vary depending on partnership agreement. One popular expert approach is shown here. North responds 2 with any game forcing hand (an Ace, a King, or two Queens or better.) Now, South bids 2NT immediately with a "minimum" 2 opener of 22-23 HCP, and bids 2 with either a stronger balanced hand, or a hand with a suit. This is known as the "Kokish" relay and has become a very popular way to show strong balanced hands of various strength without going past 2NT. North is forced to bid 2 over 2, and now South bids 2NT confirming a balanced hand of 24+ HCP. Note that South's suit is neither good enough nor long enough to want to bid naturally, and it is clear to show the hand as balanced, given that both of the doubletons are a pretty strong stopper!!! After North looks for a fit, and signs off in 3NT, South should be content, as their hand is not any stronger than already shown, and it should be clear that the and holdings might create some communication difficulties.

Against a 3NT contract in general, West would certainly lead a , but they might be more inclined to lead a safer suit at matchpoints given the massive strength shown in the South hand. As it happens, a lead is actually best for the defense, as East can win with the Ace and continue the suit. As long as declarer isn't foolish enough to play the Queen, things will work out well, despite the tenuous situation. West can win the Jack and safely exit in another suit. Declarer doesn't have any way to get to the dummy on their own, but will be able to use the opponents to help with that. After cashing the AK, AK and four tricks (thanks to the nice break in the suit), declarer can exit a , and West will either be forced to give up the ninth trick to declarer in the suit or lead a to dummy's Queen. Declarer won't even have to guess which suit West has left at trick 13, as West will have conveniently shown out of s. The only way I can see for declarer to go wrong is if they play for West to be 4-4 in s and s and try to set up a long trick, but even that can be avoided if declarer notices that East has lead back the lowest outstanding , suggesting they started with a doubleton and not three. +400 should be a relatively common score, though some will go wrong in either the bidding or the play.

It's hard to see how N/S can stop on a dime in 3 on this hand. West will open 2 at many tables. It would be nice to have a little better suit quality or some shortness, but at matchpoints, it is usually best to be aggressive at preempting. North has a good hand, but can't really double with only a doubleton , and a rather poor four card suit. So, it looks like overcalling 3 is the only reasonable choice, even though North should usually have a six card suit for this. East can just squeak out a raise, despite the overall poor nature of the hand, but might also pass. Either way, South will have to decide whether their 5-5 holding in the majors but relatively weak hand is worth bidding when their shortness is facing their partner's long suit. If South does bid, North will surely drive to game, as 4 might make opposite a very mild hand by South. Notice that 4 would be a much better contract if South's Q or even the J were in s instead. As it happens, 4 is doomed unless the opponents decide not to lead s. As a lead will be marked from both sides, it's hard to see how the defense won't make four tricks. A contract has five unavoidable losers, so N/S can't even take comfort in the possibility that a contract will +110 for E/W. Any N/S pair who manages to play 3 should do very well indeed.

Can N/S avoid the 3NT trap on this hand? Only a few bidding sequences will be successful. North has a normal 1 opening bid, and unless E/W are playing minimum offshape Takeout Double , allowing East to double, N/S will have the bidding to themselves. If East does double, it's a lot less clear what the final contract will be. Assuming East passes, some South pairs will be able to bid 2NT to show 11-12 HCP balanced, some will be able to bid 2 without forcing game and others will be forced to bid 1NT. With the current trend towards light opening bids, I'm not fond of jumping to 2NT with 11-12 HCP and prefer to just bid 1NT with most hands in this range, but this isn't necessarily a popular approach. If you do bid 2NT with 11-12 HCP, do you know whether a rebid of North's minor is forcing or to play? Anytime your partner bids any number of NT over your 1 opening bid, they are always marked with some length in s, so North knows that a NT contract might have issues. Either South has good enough support for the suit to run, and 3NT will probably make, or South has length in s and not a good fit, in which case a NT contract will likely be poor. At IMPs, North should probably just take a chance and try 3NT, but at matchpoints it's a lot less clear. The situation isn't any better for North if South bids only 1NT as North will rebid 2 and now South will rightly feel that they need to bid again and will try 2NT, leaving North with the same choice. All in all, I expect many pairs to be playing 3NT with a few in 2NT or 3.

How will 3NT fare? It turns out that it might well be a better contract than it first appears. If West leads a , declarer can win and lead a . Most defenders will not be familiar with the importance of playing second hand high here, and will quietly play low, allowing declarer to put in the 10. East will be forced to win and continue s, but now declarer can win, run the suit, and eventually lead a to the Ace and a to the 9 to make their contract. Or East might get endplayed in s. West is certainly unlikely to find a as their opening lead, which would certainly doom 3NT, and make even 2NT likely to fail. There will certainly be some +400 scores for N/S and they are likely to be near tops.

E/W should have no problems getting to 3NT on this hand, though either partner might end up as declarer. The defense is likely to get off to a lead, and all the matchpoints will come down to which way declarer decides to finesse the Queen. As declarer can pick up all of the 4-1 splits in the South hand, but will lose to the singleton Queen in the Sou'th hand if they play North for the length, it is correct to finesse South for the Queen, absent any other information from the bidding or opening lead. As the opening lead will likely make it obvious that the length is split, I expect most declarers to play s the normal way and lose a trick to North's Queen. Thus, +600 should be a relatively common E/W score. Any pair who play s in the other direction, or gain an overtrick in s should be well above average.
