South has her bid. Unfortunately for her side EW hold the balance of power. West will double to tell partner that South is in trouble. North will transfer to her suit. South will accept the transfer to spades.

It is difficult for EW to reenter the auction at this point. The final contract at many tables will have South declaring in spades. She will be doubled at some tables.

The contract will likely be down three. West will lead the 10. If declarer plays low East should as well. This limits declarer to one diamond trick and also reduces declarer's entries to dummy.

The defense should score two spades, one heart, one heart ruff, one diamond, one diamond ruff and two clubs.

At first blush East has a quiet pass however she knows that North has hearts and she wants partner to lead a heart. Also, since she has little help in the other suits she does not want partner to lead away from any high cards West may be holding.

The double of a notrump contract conventionally asks partner to lead dummy's first bid suit. Hearts is dummy's suit. Note that if East wanted a diamond lead she would have doubled the 2 bid.

East will win the first trick and shift. It will probably be to a low spade. South will play her king and West will take her ace to return another heart. East will take her two heart winners. The defense will eventually score at least one more trick. If South decides to cash out she will win eight tricks. However if she tries to make her contract at this point she may lose an extra down trick as the defense can score a club and a spade.

South has a great hand however she will start with a 1 bid. She will jump shift to show approximately 18 HCPs and North will bid the heart game.

West will lead the Q helping declarer. South will win her ace and play West for the J and at some point take the marked diamond finesse.

Declarer will scramble however she should get to 10 tricks. After winning the A we think she should cash the A and then play a diamond to dummy She can cash the other diamond discarding her Q. She can exit dummy with a high club, taking the ruffing finesse which will lose to West.

Declarer has a good club coming to her as well as a club ruff and a high spade honor. This gives her seven tricks. Depending upon the play at various tables South should win three more hearts to make her contract.

West starts with a double and then bids her suit to show a hand worth 18 HCPs. East can't pass fast enough and does nothing to encourage partner to move forward.

South has long spades however she has no points and will stay out of the auction.

North will lead the Q. Declarer can place almost all the missing honors in the North hand. She will win the ace and draw trump. North may holdup for one or two rounds but declarer will eventually draw all the trump. She can then cash the A and advance a diamond toward dummy taking the finesse. She should overtake the 10 with the jack to cash the A, discarding a losing spade from her hand.

West will finish with nine tricks.

West has an easy diamond lead. East will play the Q and South must win to make extra tricks. If South ducks, East will cash her ace and continue diamonds. Declarer will win and must later lose a spade. On this line she will win 10 tricks.

South must win the first diamond. She can run six club tricks and must decide whether to finesse East for the Q. If West is careless and discard two hearts then South should take the view that East holds the Q and play accordingly. West must discard four diamonds to not give the heart situation away. We don't expect that to happen at many tables as West sees her hearts as useless cards.

If declarer is watching she will cash the K and play a heart to her jack. This will give her 11 tricks.

EW will very reasonably get to their heart game. East will make a Limit Raise according to partnership methods. The partnership will get to the right spot however the contract will fail.

North will lead the A and continue with the king to give South a diamond ruff. South will play a spade to North who will play a forth round of diamonds. Declarer must ruff high in dummy. She can draw trump and will make nine tricks but not her contract.

West would like to have one more heart however she is hoping partner has two as her suit is almost self - supporting. Some Wests will try 3NT.

There is a school of thought which suggests that East bid 1NT at her second turn, hiding her spade suit. The thinking is that if EW end in 1NT then the less the defense knows about East's distribution the better. Most partnerships use some form of New Minor Forcing and if West has values to continue she can inquire about either heart support or spades.

North may lead a spade. Declarer has no reason to finesse. She will win the ace and draw trump. Then she will lead a diamond to dummy. South may duck. Declarer will call for a club in an effort to get to her hand to repeat the diamond play. South will take her ace and declarer is home.

When next she plays diamonds North will contribute the J and her 10 has suddenly grown into a winner.

Declarer will lose a second club but make her contract.

South opens 2 then bids 2NT to show the value of her hand. North checks for a major suit fit and finding none bids the notrump game.

West will lead a spade for two reasons. She knows that South does not have four spades. More importantly she does not want to give away a trick by leading away from her KJ. East should withhold her K. (This should be easy as West should lead her 9.

Declarer holds nine diamonds so she will cash her high diamonds hoping to drop the queen. This does not happen however declarer should play the J on the third round to dislodge the queen. This creates two entries to dummy in the diamond suit.

East does not have a good exit as whichever suit she chooses will give declarer a finessing position.

South can eventually get to dummy to lead a heart toward her hand. Declarer has several ways to come to 10 tricks. The heart play will give her three heart tricks. She will win at least tow spades, three if East continues the suit. (East won't if West opened with the 9.) Declarer has four diamonds and possibly two clubs. The defense will have three tricks regardless which line declarer takes.

West will open and later rebid her suit. North will overcall in spades. East cannot pass quickly enough and is hoping partner will reopen with a double which she will convert to penalty and pass. South wants to get into the auction but does not have enough points to bid freely at the two level. (The Laws of Bridge do not permit South to double partner to show the other two suits.)

North will lead the A. When both South and West follow suit North knows that declarer cannot get to dummy except by ruffing either a heart or a diamond. Clearly West intends to ruff red losers in dummy so North should play her trump at the next trick.

South can take over the defense. She should win each time West plays a red card and return a trump. The defense can run dummy out of trump. West will then lose three hearts, three diamonds and one club.

East is a little light for her vulnerable preempt. However we think she should do what she can to jam the auction. (If 3 is too rich for you consider bidding 2 which isn't quite as effective.) There are tow reasons for East to preempt. The obvious one is that she wants to use as much space as possible and make it difficult for NS. The second reason is that if North is declarer East will lead her spade. (When you show a six card suit and lead a different suit, that lead is always a singleton.)

South however will be declarer so while East may have laid the groudwork for a meaningful lead she will not have a chance to use it. West may decide to try the A and continue the suit to give partner a ruff. East can exit a diamond. Declarer will win in dummy and can try wither the heart finesse or the club finesse but not both. Consequently declarer must lose one more trick. She will make her contract but not an overtrick if the defense starts a spade.

In the modern game we open most 11 HCP hands however South does not have a good enough hand to open as it's too flat. If she held a five card suit she would open.

West bids her hand and East takes the partnership to game.

North will lead a heart, Declarer may duck one round or two however she will win her ace and cash her winners ending in her hand to lead a club toward dummy.

She does not want to make the club play early as if she is wrong the defense can cash three hearts and two clubs. She will take her winners first.
