1Pass2All pass

The auction shown is pretty conservative all around. East opens 1 and South should pass with the wrong shape for a takeout double or to overcall. West bids 1 and North doesn't have enough to bid 2, so passes. East might think about 3 with such good diamonds and since we open hands that are much worse than this. East might also bid 2 which is a big winner when partner has five of them. It would be costly for North to balance as diamonds will make for -110 (to North-South) and a balancing 2 will allow East to bid 2 resulting in -140 for N-S. Balancing when the opponents are in the minors often pushes them to more profitable spots (either a major or notrump).

Against diamonds, South leads a high club and has a tough problem at trick two. I might still be sitting at the table thinking about it. Luckily for me I don't wind up stuck at the table often these days. Declarer is likely to lose only 4 tricks-- two spades, and one in each minor.

I wouldn't bet on this exact auction occurring at any table, but that's the beauty of bridge--we can make different choices that may or may not work. I would open the East hand at any vulnerability, but particularly white again red. The South hand is imperfect (wouldn't it be nice if the K was in with the hearts?), but we are rarely dealt perfect hands. Probably at these colors, I wouldn't bid 2, but I was in the mood to show it here. It would be good to know what your system is after a Michaels Cuebid, and 2 may be non-forcing by agreement, but without solid agreements this is safer. North has an easy jump to 4, and East needs to make a decision under duress, but should opt to show the fit with the favorable vulnerability. South and West will pass, and now North has a tough choice. The vulnerability screams stop, but you have a known 11-card fit and it feels like partner might have a singleton diamond. West's eventual double isn't made on the strength of his heart suit, but on the overall values of his hand opposite an opening bidder (who also bid game over 2).

Dummy will be a disappointment for North, and the defense can take four tricks before declarer can even say "thank you partner." In diamonds, declarer can ruff two hearts (on a heart lead) and play a spade to the ten to make. Of course, North is likely to lead his singleton spade, making the contract simple for declarer. The auction should allow declarer to guess well regardless.

West might choose to treat this hand as strong Michaels and start with 2. I don't like bidding "medium-hand" Michaels where you have a constructive hand, but not enough to raise partner after he chooses a suit. This hand has barely enough strength to raise after bidding 2 by some estimates, but I prefer the path shown. North passes, with 3-card support for partner and a hand that did not get it's share of face cards. East can bid 2NT to show his values and stoppers. South doesn't have enough to bid 3 when the opponents have values in his suits. West has a routine raise to 3NT, since it's not worth searching for a minor suit at matchpoints.

Against 3NT, South will probably lead a high heart. Now declarer should be careful to play on diamonds before losing the Q entry to hand. The play can become complicated if South holds up in diamonds. Without entries to hand, the play is frustrating for everyone. South has to find pitches and East has to make guesses. The play on a non-heart lead is much simpler, even though a spade might be scarier. This is a good hand for declarer to be counting points, as he is only missing 12 and South opened. A Michaels Bid might have worked well as 6 looks interesting, but will go down on a bad split.

1NT2All pass

This is one where system will matter. I'd like to be able to show a single-suited major, but if North passes, South's balancing bid will test the partnership's ability to find hearts. For instance, if South balances with 2 showing clubs and a higher, then 2 should be natural, but will South trust that partner knows that? If North bids 2 or forces partner to 2 initially, then South should not do any hero work to save partner.

In 2, declarer loses two spades, the A one club and one diamond for certain. The result will depend on whether East finds a diamond play at some point. I don't see it happening, so declarer will likely be able to pitch a diamond on a spade. Declarer can cause headaches for West by holding up one round of clubs (assuming the likely K lead). West will need to win the second heart and exit a heart to make declarer work.

I know many people will open the North hand 1--send your emails to my Antarctica address. I like to plan my rebid, and I don't like the idea of rebidding 1NT after 1 P 1. I'd rather bid 1 P 1 P 2 and at least my partner will know I have 9 cards in the minors. I know that anyone under 30 is laughing at me for worrying about rebidding notrump with a singleton. Anyway, this should be a competitive part-score battle. It's hard for E-W to find spades once South has bid them. West probably wouldn't bid 3 if vulnerable, but here, it looks reasonably safe.

If North starts the defense by leading his singleton spade and getting a ruff, North will need to decide whether to draw dummy's trumps or to attempt a minor suit card. Whichever happens, declarer might decide to try to ruff a club in dummy, but risks South getting in to give North another ruff. The defenders should try to draw trump if declarer look to be ruffing in dummy. The results on this board will probably include many plus scores for North-South so the ability to defeat hearts more than one trick will be essential.
