Lynn Berg Hand Analysis

East opens 1. West bids 1. With New Minor Forcing , West discovers the eight card heart fit and will end up declaring in the heart game. What will North lead? It makes little difference this time; most will lose two spades and a diamond and make their game. A lucky declarer might get to set up the thirteenth diamond before spades are played and enjoy an overtrick.

Lynn Berg Hand Analysis

Typically, E-W will end up in 3NT and be disappointed in the missing diamond honors which make that eight card fit no more profitable than the seven card club fit. Still, it will seem right to attack the longer suit first.

Lynn Berg Hand Analysis

Even a liberal application of the Rule of 20 won't have South opening in first seat. West opens 1. Will North bid that ratty spade suit? If he passes. it's East who will bid 1. Now South may chime in with hearts as a passed hand--and North will sit up and take notice with a hand which revalues to 13 points. Will he bid the game? Assuming that South must have some shape as well as a decent suit to come in at the two level, it's possible.

North opens 2NT. South transfers and then bids spades but North will go for the NT game. Playing hearts before spades, he'll wish the East and West hands were reversed, but 10 tricks in NT should be achievable.

West has a maximum for a 2 opener. South is happy to double, and West bumps it to 3. North should love his hand and bid the club game. Happily they break for only one loser-- chances are worth taking.

Lynn Berg Hand Analysis

West opens 1. North may double, though with only three spades, some will choose to bid 2. East passes. South will rather reluctantly bid 2 if North doubles, though he may well choose to pass if North overcalls 2. Either way, West rebids those nice long hearts. Now if North has already bid clubs, she'll double and South has to decide whether to pass or bid 3. It's a close call. Repeated club leads will make West very uncomfortable.

South opens 1 and will declare in the heart game. West's normal lead is the Q. South can delay drawing trump to ruff spades. He has the luxury of plenty of entries to his hand. This hand should be fun to play if South remembers to get rid of the spades before drawing trump.

West opens 1NT and will be declarer in four spades. The two pitches on diamonds won't eliminate two side losers one way or another. There aren't many flat boards, but this should come close.

Lynn Berg Hand Analysis

It's ugly, but North opens 1NT. South will drive to slam, probably in NT. He might transfer, but I wouldn't blame any South who just used Gerber (yes, even without second round control in clubs), settling for small slam when off an Ace. It won't make any difference if North opens 1; South will still go slamming. It's just easier with the initial NT call.

East's 1 passes around to North who has a very nice hand. He's too good just to balance in 1 and doesn't have the right hand for a balancing 2; double is a reasonable choice. East might bid 2 and South will show hearts. Now North will show her spades and South is likely to quit. It's hard to know what to do. Maybe bid 3 and have North try 3NT? It won't work this time without a defensive error, but we can live in hope!

South's 1 passes around to East, who reopens with a double. They'll now find their heart fit. With 25 points and an eight card fit, it's reasonable to bid game. Alas, not today when there are four red losers.

Even with three quick tricks, North may elect to open 2. South bids 3 and is charmed when North shows three card support. Checking for Aces, he finds North with two and tries 6, only losing one trump trick. Take the diamond finesse and then ruff a diamond to make this. If it's overruffed, it will have to be with a high heart honor, eliminating that as a later loser.

South opens 1, North replies 1. South is more likely to rebid clubs than 1NT; either way, North has to force the bidding with New Minor Forcing before he rebids the spades. The likely heart lead is no bother. North can either ruff out the hearts and conceded a spade trick or set up the clubs and take all 13 tricks when the Q is in the West hand. Either strategy will at least score the small slam.

West opens 1. Will North bid spades? Unless he's going to have to bid at the three level, East will raise hearts (and perhaps feel better about the location of the K). Bid slam? What if the hearts didn't break and the diamond K10 weren't on side and doubleton? Hmm. Maybe not.

West has a reasonable 1NT opener even if they usually prefer to show the five card major. East relays to clubs and then bids his spades to show this big hand, but West will show little enthusiasm. East should forge on to slam, though, whether it's clubs or NT. Just bidding any slam will probably mean a decent board.

North opens 1NT and will declare in spades. How many? An optimistic South will bid the game--and be rewarded this time. After all, there's a good chance North will have three spades. Pitch one diamond loser on the heart winners, then ruff at least one other. Alert defense will lead trump, though, after winning a diamond.

South opens 3 at many tables. West will--to his sorrow it turns out--bid 3, likely to end the bidding. And what a nightmare it is! South cashes two clubs and shifts to the 10. Ouch. Declarer suffers with seven losers.
