  1. 15-17 high card points
  2. natural overcall

This week kinda focuses on overcalling 1NT: Board 1, Board 12 and Board 18.

So many times I say "depending on partnership agreements" ... I wish I could somehow say it once and never have to say it again, but I guess that is bridge!

Auction: North deals and with 15 hcp, a balanced hand and 7 losers opens the bidding 1NT with maybe the weakest hand possible playing 15-17 hcp notrumps. After two passes West with 15 hcp, 6 losers and a nice diamond suit must take some sort of action. Depending on partnership agreements West with 5 diamonds and 4 spades might double, but in the auction here, West bids 2 as a natural bid to play (balancing bids are different than direct overcall bids) with the intent to rebid spades if partner bids hearts.

Play: The play of this deals is not hard. North chooses not to lead away from Q10x, AJxx or AQJx so leads the J. Declarer (West) pulls 2 rounds of diamond and leads the Q with the intent to set up heart tricks. North should have ducked the first heart and won the second bu here rises with the A and switched to 10 which South wins and now finesses West for clubs. When declarer get back in he goes back to hearts. North/South win 1 spade + 1 heart + 2 clubs, making 3.

  1. Forcing F1
  2. jump shift GF
  3. shows 2 hearts

This deal is a bit tricky.

Auction: East with 15 high card points , 5 losers and a nice 6-card heart suit AKJ987 opens the bidding 1 and West responds 1NT Forcing . Let's first assume North/South are silent throughout. East with 15 hcp and self sustaining heart suit could make a jump rebid of 3 showing a 5-6 loser hand, but with a void in diamonds East doesn't need much help for game. In the auction here, East makes a game forcing Jump Shift to 3. West bids 3NT which should show two hearts so East bids 4. If in the auction South does bid, East can use this bid to maybe cuebid to show a better hand instead of the jump shifty to 3.

Play: We can get tricky with the play here, but as long as South does not lead the unsupported A or lead away from the K on opening lead, North/South should win 2 clubs and the K. if South does lead the A, with two entries to the board, declarer (East) can finesse North for the K and make much more.

This is a deal someone will overbid.

Auction: West deals and with 14 high card points and a 6-card spade suit opens the bidding 1. North with 11 hcp and a decent 5-card heart suit K10976 overcalls 2. After East passes South with 12 hcp and NO FIT in hearts NOR a 5-card suit to bid passes. West with 14 hcp balances back in with 2 and South doubles for penalty.

Down 2 — NS +300

Play: On defense North leads the AK and when South discourages with the 3, North shifts to a club and South runs off the AKQ and leads his 4th club. Declarer (West) is now in a difficult position, if declarer trumps low North can win his J if declarer trumps high North can now still win his J, so North throws away the J hoping North must trump with the K. So North/South win K + 2 diamonds + 3 clubs + club ruff, down 2 doubled.

  1. 15-17 high card points
  2. Jacoby Transfer
  3. Unusual Notrump

This is another 1NT overcall deal (see Board 1). BTW this deal proves me WRONG on Board 1 being the weakest notrump opening hand.

Auction: North 15 hcp and 8 losers opens the bidding 1NT East passes and South bids 2 as an escape transfer to spades, with better values South would have first bid 2 as Stayman. Over 2 West bids 2NT as an Unusual notrump for the minors.* North with 4 spades could bid 3, depending on partnership agreement, but with a crappy 8-loser hand North decides to let South make the determination to bid. East with 3 diamonds and 3 clubs bids 3 clubs, just in case West meant 2NT as an equal level conversion bid.

* The 2NT was also a protection bid protecting partner's values.

Play: 3 is not a difficult contract to play. South leads the Q to the A and North has a hard time on what to lead back. Declarer (East) can now pitch a heart on the K and the play on clubs and diamonds should be straight forward. Playing North for the A and the K and the Q, making 3.

Fred Ferguson Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
  PassPass

3All pass

Partnerships that open 1NT with a 5-card major will be disappointed in the results of this deal. With 16 high card points and a 5-4-2-2 hand if West opens 1NT and North overcalls 2 West will not have a rebid and will certainly not find the 10-card club fit.

Auction: In the auction here with 5 spades West after two passes opens the bidding 1 with the plan to rebid clubs. Now after North overcalls 2 it is very very very easy for West to bid 3 and partner passes.
