4All pass
  1. Weak Two-Bid
  2. natural F1
  3. show a good hand

Some with North's hand will open 2 as a Weak Two-Bid (W2B) because ... well, just because. About the best reason for opening 2 in first seat is that North does want a diamond lead. I don't always discount opening a W2B with a 4-card major, but in first seat North should have a better hand, North's outside values are squirrelly, at best.

Auction: North passes. East, with 10 high card points , 7 losers and Rule of 20 , using ACBL new Average Strength definition (see below), could easily open 1 which might make it easier for East/West to get to game in 4. But in the auction here, East with Qx as questionable opens the bidding 2 as a W2B choosing to define a 6-card suit. West bids 3 as natural and forcing. If East just rebids 3 West might pass, but East bids 4 showing a good hand (a maximum W2B typically has 8-10 hcp and 7 losers) for the opening W2B of 2 and West bids 4.

ACBL Open Convention Chart applies in any event with no upper masterpoint limit and is recommended by ACBL for most open club games. Average Strength is a hand that has at least 10 hcp or meets the Rule of 19.

Play: On the lead of a heart or diamond, the play of this hand is not hard to make 5 or 6 as in the play here. South's best defense is to lead a club, but it is hard for South to lead away from the Q1087 when East has bid clubs naturally as a second suit. Declarer (East) finesses North for both the Q and the Q.

This is only a hard slam deal if North/South make it hard.

East has a hand I would strongly consider opening 1 even in first seat. East has 10 hcp, just 8 losers , a beautiful heart suit KQJ97 (clearly wants a heart lead) and all of the values are working J10x and QJx ... put any honor in spades and East would NOT open in first seat. In the auction here East will pass because most of the field will pass, but if East opens 1, South will overcalls 2 and the rest of the auction will proceed mostly as below.

Auction: South with 11 hcp and 7.5 losers opens the bidding 1. East/West are silent throughout. North with 18 hcp makes a 2/1 bid of 2 to make the auction forcing (if East had opened 1 North would have cuebid 2 to make the auction forcing). South with minimum values rebids 2 and North bids 3 (anyone who bids 3NT has shut out the slam). Having a diamond fit, South shows a control in clubs with 4. North takes control of the auction with 4 as Roman Keycard Minorwood . South's response of 4 shows 1 keycard (already shown a minimal hand). North's bid of 4 is asking about the Q and South bids 5 showing both the Q and the K (denying theK, cheapest king). North bids 7.

It is possible someone will bid 7NT, but with North holding 7 losers and South showing minimal values, this looks like a deal that will make 7 on distribution, not strength.

Play: The play for 7 has a pretty simple plan. Watching transportation, pull trump, put a club on the A and trump a third club from dummy. If clubs are split then put a heart on dummy's 4th club. If clubs are not split then put a squeeze on clubs and hearts for the 13th tricks. As it works out clubs are split 4-3-3-3 and it is an easy play.

... Bidding should not be hard ... just describe your hand AND when you have fully described your hand STOP bidding.

With 2 outside defensive tricks A and A East has too strong of a hand to consider a 3 preemptive opening bid. East might consider an opening bids of 2, but East doesn't really require an opening lead of a diamond.

Auction: East with 12 length points (A, A, J + 3 length points) opens the bidding 1. West responds 1 and East with a minimal hand rebids 2. West bid of 3 is a "high reverse" and like any reverse is forcing one round and promises a third bid. Some might have East rebid 3 but West has asked East to further define his hand, and thus East bids 3 now shows something in hearts. With a huge fit in diamonds West bid of 4 is RKC Minorwood (not invitational). East response of 5 (4 steps) shows 2 keycards without the Q. West bids 6.

Play: The play of 6 is not hard, South not wanting to lead away from the K or K will most likely lead a spade where North is finessed or maybe a diamond (trump) in which case declarer can ruff out hearts setting up 2 pitches for spades.

... It is very hard to control bid in minor suit auctions as typically the partnership must first explore for major suits or notrump.

Auction: After two passes, West with 18 hcp and 6 losers opens the bidding 1 and East with 5 hcp (6 length points) and a decent 5-card heart suit QJ9xx responds 1. West makes a jump rebid of 2NT showing a balanced 18-19 hcp. East with sappy values knows this contract needs to play in 3, depending on partnership agreements (some might play Wolf Signoff) East rebids 3 to play.

  1. Splinter

Both North and South have the ability to preempt the auction, North opening a Weak Two-Bid in 2 and South making a weak jump overcall in 2, neither bid should cause East not to go for game.

Auction: East with 19 high card points opens the bidding 1 and is not sure how he will force the auction on rebid. Some with South's hand might make a weak jump overcall in spades, but in the auction here South passes, South wants a club lead not a spade lead. West responds 1 (4-card suits up the line) and although it may not be the right bid East makes a Splinter bid of 3. West with 12 support points might try for slam but holding the AQJx opposite partner's shortness in spades settles for 4.

Play: After the Splinter in spades, it is not unusual to get a spade lead, and North leads the 3. With out a club lead, declarer can finesse for the Q and shorten diamonds with diamond ruff to make 6 or even 7.
