3NTAll pass

North's 2 has flaws, but nonvulnerable with KJ9743, 2 should be standard issue. 3 is not weak after a weak bid. It shows a strong hand with spades, and is a great description of this hand. Without this bid, you'd be stuck with either a 2 bid or doubling and bidding spades, neither of which is quite right (which is why we have this available). West will likely try a pushy 3NT.

North will probably lead a diamond, and 3NT will be touch-and-go. Although double dummy says that the contract won't make, that would require a club lead (not likely). The likely actual line is that declarer will win the lead and finesse spades. South will play a club, and declarer should win in dummy and immediately play hearts or risk squeezing her hand. She might guess hearts right or not, but eventually declarer will find two diamond tricks, five spades, a club, and either a club or heart. Some declarers might even take 10 tricks.

I'm not sure that I've ever seen a deal quite like this with every hand having at least a seven-card suit. After East's opening, nothing is very clear. South could bid 1, 2, or 3. West will bid spades at whichever level required. North will now bid her eight-card suit, likely 4. What should East do now? If South preempted, then East might choose to double (the winner), but on this auction, does East really want to double? West has a nice seven-card suit, and probably bids a a reasonable 4.

If East and South swapped their four major-suit cards, then this would be an excellent contract (and 5 would be a good sacrifice). This is another deal where you want the opponents to make the final guess. Raising the level of the auction so quickly forces everyone to hope that they are in the right spot. Declarer will learn that this is not the case when she loses the first four tricks. That is always a risk.

I've shown a relatively peaceful auction to a non-making contract. This is a deal where bad contracts abound. South might choose to rebid 2 instead of 2 which puts North in a real bind. I would probably pass and then try to bid 2 if we find ourselves doubled. West might also overcall 2, which is not a good choice on the two-level vulnerable without a stronger suit. If that does happen, likely South reopens with a double and West is probably -200.
The play in any contract will be difficult. Against 2, East will have a difficult lead choice, but I would probably try a trump. With length in the suit the opponents opened, it often pays to cut down on the ability for the opponents to crossruff. On this deal, if the defense plays trump at each opportunity, declarer will run out of tricks fairly quickly (and the defenders can set up clubs).

  1. support double

These sorts of partscore decisions will constantly creep up. Let's go through the many decisions facing our heroes on this deal. West and North both pass and then East's 1 is simple, but then what should South do? I think with such weak diamonds I would try doubling, but 1 is reasonable. West will bid 1 either way and North should probably bid 1 either way as well and East should make a Support Double(s) if available. If it's not available, then it's a close call between 1NT and pass or possibly 2--if South doubled I would try 1NT and if South bid diamonds I'd pass (see how the domino effect works on this deal) or try 2. Are we confused yet? On our auction, South can't raise, but if she bid diamonds originally, she would bid 2. West preferences to clubs and North can compete to the 2-level. Should East or West compete to 3? At a different vulnerability, maybe. On this deal, it likely will work, but I would be afraid and probably let the opponents play 2.

In 2, East will probably lead a fourth-best 7. Dummy should play low (if they led from the ace, they deserve to win the extra trick), and West should take stock. A good habit before you play third to the trick is to analyze the opening lead. Normally, we'd be hesitant to play the ace here, since it could give away a trick if declarer has Qxx. Is that the case here? Nope! You should be able to figure out that declarer has 2 or 3 clubs headed by the J. The Rule of 11 (take the spot led and subtract that number from 11 to see how many higher cards are out) shows that there are 4 cards missing higher than the 7. That means declarer has either the Q, J, or 10. Why do we know that declarer has the J? If you had QJ or J10, which card you lead? Not fourth-best! This type of "magic trick" should really be part of your regular thinking before playing to trick two. That means you can safely win the A and return a club. Declarer has to lose one trick in each suit, but will have to guess diamonds to avoid going down.

  1. Support Double(s)

I sometimes have to remind myself to avoid the word normal, especially when I show an auction where a hand with a 10-count opens the bidding. That said, I think 3NT looks like a normal contract. The North hand is too strong for a preempt, even at these colors. South could choose to game-force by bidding 2 or bid a simple 1 as shown here (this is a matter of style when 4-4, but you should never bypass a 5-card major unless you have extreme shape). West will bid 2 over 1 and North makes a Support Double. South could think about passing to defend 2x, but the colors make it much more likely that 3NT will be a good score. You should be hesitant to make a penalty pass when your trump are in front of the declarer.

Against 3NT, West will lead the 7 and East will play the J. Declarer should win and then play a diamond. The K's appearance at trick two seems like a mixed blessing. It's possible that this is from Kx, but unlikely. As a result, South might consider ducking, to lose the diamond trick to West rather than East. If declarer wins the diamond and continues diamonds, she'll find out the bad news and should hope that West has the A. She can play one round of spades before playing her third diamond. When East has the A, declarer will go down two (five clubs and a spade). Some declarers might go down three (depending on whether East is willing to cash the diamond winner). That said, I've seen leads like the A allow declarer to make it. When you have a long suit and no entries, it's important to lead low. The double dummy way to make 8 tricks is to hold up in clubs, but there's no reason to consider that line.
