North doesn’t like her opening bid as she has few HCPs in her suit. However she must bid the hand she holds. South also is unhappy with her club bid but she too must bid the hand she holds.

North shows her second suit and South bids the spade game.

East will lead a club. It doesn’t seem right to lead a spade or a heart. Nor should she lead a suit with an unsupported ace. So through a process of elimination clubs is the only choice left.

Declarer will win the opening lead. The offense wants to draw trump and the defense is trying to negotiate a club ruff.

When West wins her K she is more likely to play a diamond than a heart to get to partner’s hand since declarer bid hearts. This will strike gold. East wll take her ace, cash her good club and give partner a club ruff.

EW have a reasonable auction and get to the notrump game.

Since North has no outside entries she will lead a low club in an effort to establish her suit. The alternative is to an unbid major to try "hit" partner. On this deal the lead of a major suit card helps declarer so we will deal with the lead which helps the defense most.

Declarer will duck one round of clubs to sever communication between the North and South hands.

Declarer needs a lot to go right to make her contract. She must find South with the K. If North has that card the defense will run clubs. Declarer will try to score some spade tricks. To bring the suit home she must locate the J. She can afford to lose a spade trick to South but not to North so declarer should play North to hold the J.

Upon winning the opening lead declarer should place the 10 on the table and take the finesse if North plays low. She strikes gold and brings home four spade tricks.

Her trick count is now eight as she has four spades, one heart, one diamond and two clubs. She must take the heart finesse which works. Declarer should try the heart finesse the first time she is in dummy and repeat the finesse when she is there a second time. This gives her 10 tricks.

South will lead a club. From the auction she learns that East holds four hearts and West must hold four spades else she would not have used Stayman to inquire about the majors. South knows that East has a huge hand so leading a diamond may give the suit away. South assumes a passive posture and should start a club.

North will win a club and switch to a heart. (North leads to the weakest suit on her right.) The defense will put pressure on declarer who will prevail and make her nine tricks.

Declarer will play low on the heart return. South will win and play another club. Declarer must again play low and North will take a second club trick to return a second heart. Declarer will play low and South will score her second heart trick.

If declarer is watching the spots she sees her 6 is now high. East has her nine tricks in the form of four spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club.

West will open 1. Depending upon partnership style East will either bid 1 or 1. Regardless West will bid 1NT which will be the final contract.

West should come to eight tricks on this deal however the play will vary from table to table. Depending upon the auction North may lead a high heart or a spade. (It's usually not wise to lead from an unsupported honor so North may avoid leading a diamond.)

As the spades split 3 - 3 West should score three spade tricks. She can also score two heart tricks. She can score three diamond tricks and interestingly on this layout she can score two club tricks.

However in order for declarer to establish some winners she must surrender tricks. In the end we expect declarer to win her eight. The order of play will dictate which eight those tricks will be.

East's first bid may be a heart, depending upon partnership style. Regardless West will rebid her suit. We don't think her hand is worthy of a 3 call however some may try that. EW will end in a low - level club contract.

Declarer will win the opening lead, draw trump. She will eventually lead a spade toward dummy's king. This will win her a spade trick. She will make the same play in diamonds and win a diamond trick. The defense will score two spades, one heart and one diamond.

We expect everyone to make nine tricks at clubs.

East quite reasonably tries to jam the auction by opening with a Weak Two Bid in hearts. South passes smoothly and in tempo. North reopens with a double. South thanks her partner (silently) and passes a second time. West has no place to run.

South will lead a high spade. When she sees dummy she will switch. North's double suggests four spades which means that declarer has two. Were South to cash the K she would establish high spades in dummy for East discards. (East can get to dummy with the A.)

We think South should play a club in an effort to "kill" dummy. Declarer will win the ace in dummy and play a heart to South's ace. South cashes high spade and exits a club which North will win to play another club. East will ruff and South can discard a spade. The defense will get three diamonds and they should time it so North wins the third diamond. North can now play a diamond or a spade in an effort to get South an extra trump trick. Fortunately for declarer the defense can only win eight tricks and not nine.

The result will be a good score for NS.

This is our second deal of the afternoon which should have little to no variation . Every NS should get to the heart game. There is no reason to bid a slam on this layout. (South will be tempted and will consider for a second or two as she has extras. However in the end she will settle for the heart game.)

The defense will score one club and one heart. There is no reason for declarer to play hearts in any way other then the standard of cashing the A and leading a heart toward dummy.

If East's opening lead is a diamond, West will discourage. When East wins her K she will play a club. West will take her ace. In the unusual situation where the defense does not cash the A promptly declarer will make 12 tricks as she can discard clubs on either her diamonds or on dummy's spades.

South partners have a checkback sequence over South's 2NT bid asking whether South holds four hearts or three spades. South will deny either holding. North does not have a close decision whether to pursue a slam. Her side may have only 29 HCPs. Although North has a five card suit, which is usually a source of tricks her hearts are anemic.

Declarer should scramble on tricks on this layout.

West may lead a heart. This gives declarer two hearts tricks however this is something declarer could have done on her own. Declarer will cash her high spades and play a diamond to dummy noting the fall of a diamond honor from the West hand. Declarer will cash dummy's spades.

She must decide whether to exit dummy with a diamond or a club.

The fall of the diamond honor from the West hand suggests that the other honor may be in the East hand, in which case declarer wants to take the diamond finesse. That said, a club exit guarantees two club tricks even if the club finesse fails.

We think declarer should exit the club. When that finesse works declarer will cash her second high diamond and be rewarded when the other diamond honor falls, Her10 is her twelfth trick.

 NMF: New Minor Forcing

West's 2 bid is New Minor Forcing asking for four hearts or three spades in the East hand. When East shows four hearts, West bids the heart game.

North holds the best hand at the table yet she has nothing to say during the auction. She also knows that her partner will contribute little to the defense of the deal.

South will lead a high club. Declarer will play low from dummy to insure two club tricks and a parking spot for dummy's second diamond.

As mentioned above, North knows that her partner has little to contribute. So North exits safely with a club. Declarer will win the ace and play a heart toward her hand. North may take her ace immediately to exit a heart. Declarer will eventually lead a spade to dummy. North will win the ace. Declarer can cash dummy's high spade and ruff a spade to establish the suit.

The defense will win two aces and one club.
