  1. Showcasing DONT -- clubs and any other suit
  2. Stayman
  3. Diamonds and a higher suit
  4. Lots of clubs -- and hearts!

Defeating 3 will take quite a bit of maneuvering:

Small heart lead from South, promising an honor. North wins the Jack
Ace of diamonds
Diamond ruff
Heart to the ace
diamond ruff.

Not all will be able to duplicate that defense, and it would be complicated by declarer's forcing the A by playing the Q, trick one. Thereafter, South would be hard-pressed to underlead the second round of hearts to North's NINE!

The North hand is too good for a 2NT opening bid, worth about 24 points on various scales, such as the K&R scale (23.4), Kleinman (24) and Bergen (24 as I calculate). So 2 rather than 2NT. Not to worry about unmentionables such as unguarded suits. That's what partners are for.

After the 2 waiting bid and 2NT rebid, South makes a mild slam try by transferring and raising to game, after which North can visualize tricks worthy of slam -- if only that mild slam try involves a diamond stop! Well, let's give it a go, shall we?

After one ace gives North confidence in the diamond suit, 5 seeks comfort in South's likelihood of producing a heart suit with no losers. 6 shows the Q, but no side suit king.

And we are there. Or are we? North might sniff out 13 tricks, with six hearts, two aces, and five clubs, but where, exactly is the assurance that South has the J or that the clubs will run? Not present, so don't risk a good score on a hope and a prayer.

Some North players might find it more comforting, safe, and possibly detail-oriented to bid 1 over the takeout double, but if the goal in bidding is to find major suit fits, 1 is better, serving two purposes simultaneously -- establishing ownership of the spades in case partner has that suit, and making hearts just a little harder to find by the opponents.

It turns out that neither major suit is a suitable location, so the question is between clubs and notrump. With the extraordinarily lucky location of every missing honor, notrump is a fine contract, even making nine tricks, but South will not expect that much luck and clubs is the odds-on favorite contract across the field.

Declarer should play to ruff a heart, blended with a possible spade pitch or a remote chance at a diamond suit establishment.

Making ten tricks in clubs should prove profitable if achieved.

NS can overcome preemption -- even 3, if necessary, as shown.

Making five is routine.

Ten tricks? Spade spots plus K onside, K onside for two finesses and run the suit?

Wow -- how many aggressive pairs will even get to game with a quacky twelve opposite eleven?

North has a borderline opener, at best. Will anyone pass this hand out!?!?

Preempts create difficult decisions. Most will reopen with a double in the East seat, but will not be able to pass the 3 bid. LUCK is on East's side with that decision when the QJ fall doubleton. Still, 150 in diamonds beats 140 in spades, so kudos to those who pass 3.

Too much magic, as usual, for a slam to be bid, but game should surely be bid, and I like West's evaluation for the jump to 2, making the game bid easy.

Without an opening bid by North, the auction would be simple after 2NT opening and a heart transfer.

To make twelve tricks, draw trumps and lead a diamond to the nine (Curse of Scotland). When North splits, West is entered via a club ruff and another diamond led, again toward the Curse.

Can North bid 6 over 4NT? Hardly. Too much luck, as usual, makes one question missing a makeable slam. Measure the luck before bemoaning the bidding.

Well, actually, if you are not going to bid the slam, might as well defend this one -- plus 500 for defending 4 doubled. But South can hardly be criticized for heading for safety with the unusual 4NT takeout.

HCP are pretty evenly divided but each side has a significant negative -- high honors in the opponents' bid suit. East has the Q and South has the K, so no one should get excited about taking the declaration.

But South would know EXACTLY what to do with a 3 bid by East -- KABOOM! 500 points later, move on to the next hand.

Calmly playing 3 will net plus 110 when "Eight ever, Nine never wins the declarer problem.
