  1. invitational

I don't know (idk) when hand evaluation became so passé, maybe with ACBL new relaxed rules on opening bids where now 11 is the new 12 and 10 is the new 11 and points are just points.

This is should not be a too complex of an auction. North deals and with 9 high card points 8 losers and a beautiful spade suit KQJ10x, I would consider opening this hand 2 if I did not also hold 4 hearts.

Auction: In the auction here North passes and East with 13 hcp and 6 losers opens the bidding 1. After South passes, West responds 1 which keeps North out of the auction. East rebids 2 (2 would be a Reverse and West makes an invitational bid of 2NT. In a suit contract East with shortness in spades has 16 hcp and 6 losers and would accept almost any invitational bid for game, but in a notrump contract East has no extra values and shortness in partner's suit i.e. nothing to help support partner's suit. East passes 2NT.

Play: Not much to the play or defense of this contract. North makes an opening lead of the K South signals with the 4 hiding the 3 and when the K holds North shifts to the 5 which South wins the A and returns his last spade. North/South take 5 spades. Even if South, after winning the A, shifts to a diamond, declarer (East) is ok winning 4 hearts, 1 diamond and 3 clubs for 8 tricks.

  1. 1NT Forcing F1
  2. invitational

This is a tricky deal so much (the contract and the play) depends on how the East/West partnership handles the bidding. After East's 1NTF response to 1, West has the opportunity of rebidding 2 (11-15 high card points or 3 (16-18 hcp) With 16 hcp and 6 losers West has the values to jump to 3, but West's spade suit has a lot of gaps AQ107xxx and a lot of values in quacks (queens and jacks) double dummy we see, if West jumps to 3 the partnership could easily reach 6 only to lose the first two tricks AK.

Auction: In the auction here, West opens 1 and East responds 1NTF, forcing one round F1. West rebids 2 waiting on partner's rebid. East with 11 support points and 4 controls could easily bid 4, but chooses to keep partner in the auction with 3 and West bids 4. If East chooses to rebid 3 in stead of 3, West bid 3NT, but East should correct to 4.

Play: If West jumps to 3 in this auction, North might make an active lead of the A, but in this auction, North should not feel pressure to lead from an unsupported ace. North leads 3 as the remaining unbid suit. Declarer (West) jumps up with the A not falling for the K finesse. Wins the K and then runs off trump forcing North/South to make pitches. Holding the Q in hand as a threat card forces South to hold the K. But it doesn't make a difference West leads the Q to the A in dummy and runs off 4 diamonds, making 7.

Fred Ferguson Hand Analysis

  1. 2/1 Game Force
  2. shows extra values

While 6 can be made on this deal (see play below) I don't think 6 can realistically be bid, and even if 6 is bid it takes too much West having a singleton heart, the K to be on side and for clubs to split 4-3-3-3 (not a good slam)

Auction: East with 11 high card points and 6.5 losers opens the bidding 1 with the initial planned rebid to bid 2. North/South are silent throughout. West makes a 2/1 GF bid of 2 and East rethinks the bidding and rebids 2. West bid of 3 (not 4) shows extra values of an ace better than an opening hand. East with 16 support points for spades considers a slam try but with a void in diamonds, partner's natural bid suit the values in East/West hands don't seem to match up, and thus, no source of tricks so East bids 4.

Play: In the play here, declarer (East) wins the opening lead of a club in dummy, and immediately finesses for the K. Once the K shows up East plays on hearts winning the A and then ruffing 2 hearts in dummy hoping the spades split 2-2. When spades DONT split East plays out clubs pitching the last heart on dummy's 4th club letting North win his 10 whenever he wishes, making 6.
