Pass3NTAll pass

This hand will present some surprising bidding difficulties for N/S and getting to 3NT declared by North should be a good result. After two passes, South will need to decide how to open their hand. With so few major cards, it wouldn't be the worst bid on the world to just open 3NT. However, North needs very little for South to make a slam, and certainly South would be pleasantly surprised if North were to show a raise at some point. Some South pairs might also consider opening 2. On general hand strength a 2 opener is about right but most experts won't open 2 with a minor suit oriented hand unless it's even stronger than an average 2 opening bid (e.g. 10.5 playing tricks.) So, for many, South will open 1. On the actual hand, there will be some tables which pass out 1. However, with both majors, I would stretch and respond 1 with the North hand. If North does pass, I admit I would be likely to double back in with the East hand. Certainly if South is given a chance to bid again, they will make a game forcing 3 rebid. North has the right holding to bid 3NT, but might be worried about the minimal nature of the hand. 3NT would normally suggest a decent hand, and not uust major suit stoppers, but I would not want to bid 3 with the North hand. Should South bid again over 3NT? Given that North is marked with most of their values in the majors, it looks like there will be some losers and some communication problems in or NT slam. If North had bid anything but 3NT, then the odds of some useful cards in s would be higher, and South might make at least one slam try.

Assuming North declares 3NT, East will not have an easy lead and might start with a if it is the only unbid suit. If they do, then North can win the King, lead a to the Ace and when the Queen falls, lead a back to the 9 to take the finesse. This will net declarer 11 tricks for an excellent score. Another way that declarer might end up with 11 tricks is if they finesse in s right away, and East continues with the 10, covered by the Jack and East wins and continues the suit. However, this would not be an ideal play in s, and I don't think it will happen often. If South is the declarer in NT, the defense is much more likely to lead a , and now declarer will be taking a risky play to finesse in s, and might just cash their nine tricks and go home. Overall, any pair who go +460 should be well above average.

Pass3All pass

E/W seem unlikely to find their fit as East has a fairly normal looking 2 opening bid at most tables. Yes, East can see that his hand might play well in a contract, but generally you should be looking for reasons to bid rather than looking for reasons to pass, particularly at favorable vulnerability playing matchpoints. Assuming East does open 2, South will have to stretch to bid 2, especially at unfavorable vulnerability. The South hand isn't that great overall, and doesn't have a very good suit, and I can definitely see some experts choosing to pass. If they do, 2 is likely to be the final contract. If South overcalls, North has enough length to want to bid 4, but with no singletons, and a poor side four card suit, as well as a likely poorly placed King, it looks like discretion is the better part of valor, and North should just raise to 3 which South will quickly pass. Unless West leads a , which looks unlikely, N/S will have four unavoidable losers in the minors, so staying low on the hand will be important. Any E/W pair who manage to play in , perhaps if they are using light opening bids and open 1 with the East hand, should end up with a top score as nine tricks are easy, and ten tricks might even make if South gives away the situation, allowing declarer to get away with only two losers.

All pass

As with the last hand, South has a maximum 2 opening on strength, given the vulnerability, and no shortness, but 2 will still be the choice of many. No one has a good bid to make over 2 and it will often be the final contract. If South passes, it isn't clear where the hand will end. North might open 1, East double, and then South and West do some bidding, likely ending up in a contract for E/W. Or North might pass as well and show one or two suits after East opens 1, South passes and West responds 1. In almost all bidding sequences, it's hard to see how N/S can get to the best double dummy contract of 3, or even get to a contract. It turns out that s is the most difficult contract for N/S. Let's say West leads a . East can win the Ace, continue with the Queen and then lead a . Declarer is unlikely to play the 7, and after West wins with the King, it will be safe to exit a . Declarer will be stuck with a total of five red suit losers, and will need to make a good guess in one of the black suits to avoid going down in 2. On any other defense, either the guess work in the black suits will be removed, or the defense will help declarer hold their losers to two. Any E/W pair that manage to play a contract should do very well, as it is not hard to hold the losses to four top black suit tricks.

Pass2PassPass
DblPass2All pass

For the third hand in a row, one of the players has a potential weak two with a hand with good HCP, but poor distribution for preempting. If North does open 2, which I suspect that many will, both East and West will have to decide whether to compete with imperfect distribution and being vulnerable. I can easily see 2 passing out. East has a better hand than West, but with South still being an unpassed hand, it would be dangerous for East to make an offshape, minimal strength takeout double directly over North's 2 opening bid. West is more likely to come back in with a double when 2 gets passed around to them, as they have the comfort of both knowing that South has passed, so is at least a little limited in strength, and knowing that East won't get the bidding too high in the light of the fact that West passed to start with and is thus marked with less than opening count. Indeed, if West does double 2, East will know to only bid 2 despite holding full opening count, and this will be the final contract.

As it happens, the tables at which both East and West pass 2 might be the ones that they get the highest score. 2 is not a good contract for N/S and there are six unavoidable losers, and the potential for a seventh loser if the opponents are able to set up for a ruff. I can easily see this happening if East leads a , declarer plays low, and West wins and switches to a . Off one for N/S won't be bad, as E/W will make 2, but off two will be a disaster at this vulnerability. I expect any pair doing better than +100 for E/W will be above average.
