2NTPass3?

The North hand is a full opening in modern bidding (even my grandmother wouldn't preempt) and South responds 1. West could just overcall 2, and I don't usually like bidding Michaels or Unusual 2NT with in-between hands, but I'm not worried about missing game when the opponents open and respond. North doesn't have enough to bid freely on the three level. East could get greedy at matchpoints and bid the major, but with game unlikely, I like choosing the better suit. If the opponents bid on, I'd like partner to lead a diamond, not a heart. Over 3 South would double and the play is complicated in 3x. Over 3 South has an impossible bid. I'm submitting it to a bidding forum. Double would be penalty-ish, so that isn't a likely choice.

How does the play go in any contract? Hard to know. With spades trump, North-South have three sure losers plus the club problem and heart problems, but what exactly is West supposed to lead? If West cashes an ace, declarer is going to come close to making 10 tricks. It seems leading a spade might be best, but then if declarer plays clubs, you can't afford to ruff the first round. Oy. You could tell me the contract was 3, 3, 3, 3NT, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, or 5 any of them doubled or redoubled and any of them making or down four and I might believe it.

  1NTAll pass

West might try to improve the contract by using Stayman and then passing any response, but that would be abnormal. Even more abnormal (but I've seen it) is North doubling for "takeout". What exactly is a takeout double of 1NT? I don't know. It reminds me of the time my RHO opened the auction with double. The director was a friend of mine, so before my partner could call her over I put down a redouble--she wasn't as amused as I was.

After the likely diamond lead, dummy's 8 becomes a big card. Declarer should probably work on the spades first (finesses can wait, plus there's no safe transportation to dummy to play hearts). North's best play is to switch to a club, but the play could easily go 4-7-9-2 (good for the defense) then Q (Oops). To stop this, North would have to lead the 8 the first time, but that is not a likely play. Many different trick totals are possible for declarer here.

Pass?

Sometimes you know that you might be going for a ride after choosing to respond. This is one of those cases, where you respond 1NT to try to "steal" the hand from the opponents, and partner starts making forcing bids at every opportunity to torture you. 2NT says "please let's stop somewhere" but unfortunately partner's 3 bid doesn't seem like the place to stop. 3 is an offer to play and partner doesn't get the joke and continues with 3NT. Now what? You don't want to play in 3NT with Jxxx opposite shortness. Your major-suit holdings might be helpful, but taps are coming in the wrong hand. I'd probably try 4 and cross my fingers. At least I don't have to play it.

Against 4, West has no attractive leads, but this auction does pinpoint a diamond lead since declarer is "known" to have shortness. I'd lay down the A and look at dummy. With nothing better to do, I'd continue diamonds (with the 10). Declarer will ultimately have to lose a trump, and three minor-suit cards. He'll probably be happy to escape for that. You could make a case that the North hand might pass 2. Reverses are 100% forcing, but since you might have passed out 1, it's hard to fault the logic that you can still pass this natural-ish bid (you should never pass a jump-shift).

All pass

East might open in third-seat, and I would white, but at this vulnerability you risk the death score of -200. South has a very nice 17 count, but probably not so good that I'd upgrade out of 1NT. West passes and I've shown North passing. I hear people asking, "Have you lost your mind or just your spine?" At matchpoint scoring you shouldn't worry so much about "missing a game". With a hand like North's, I'm much happier in 1NT making 2 than in 3NT -1. In the 90s, Edgar Kaplan and Jeff Reubens worked together to try to codify the many upgrades/downgrades that experts regularly make to evaluate their hands. According to the K & R Hand Evaluator, the North hand is worth 5.65 points. 4-3-3-3 hands are bad, as are hands with lots of queens and jacks and no tens. Will tables reach 3NT? Yes. Some Norths will say "nine points" and invite, or if East opens and South doubles the auction might go 1-dbl-p-1NT-P-2NT-P- ? Some Norths might also bid 3NT here.

In notrump what happens? Well, first the diamonds split 4-4 so the defense can take only four tricks in that suit. Next, the club finesse works and declarer might unblock the 10 under the Q to ensure a late entry to dummy if East ducks. Now that's still not enough good fortune, so declarer needs to go back to dummy and take a spade finesse which also happens to work. If East opens the bidding, it's a slightly less dreadful contract, but still needs two finesses, diamonds behaving and then a little bit extra (like non 4-1 clubs). I'll sleep fine being in 1NT on this deal, even with 26 HCP. If West leads a spade, declarer might take the first 11 tricks (+210 for me, maybe +660 for you).

I hate to open my three-card suit in third seat, since partner might think I have less than full opening values with a decent suit. With that in mind, I'd consider opening 1, but the vulnerability is such that I don't want to get too far from the beaten path. You open 1 with 3 diamonds only when you have this exact shape which is rare enough that I don't worry about short club systems or anything like that. West doubles and North might try 2 (if that is not inverted) if not, East will bid 2 as shown.

What exactly should South lead? This might be my second time recommending an unsupported ace lead out of 5 boards. Certainly a trump might be right, but I would try the A. I am thinking that maybe I can make the opponents trump and set up trump trick(s). On this layout, the A might lead us to the only winning defense (getting a club ruff/trump promotion). Notrump by East-West turns out to be the best making spot, but the top scores for the East-West pairs will be for those whose North-South opponents found the death score of -200.
