  1. 15-17 high card points
  2. Stayman
  3. denies a 4-card major

I don't know (idk) when hand evaluation became so passé, maybe with ACBL new relaxed rules on opening bids where 11 is the new 12 and 10 is the new 11 and points are just points.

Some with East hand holding 11 hcp might feel obligated to open East hand 1, but East doesn't really have honors in a long suit and on initial count the J is worthless (and back in the day of Goren, you would even subtract 1 point for a 4-3-3-3 hand)

Auction: In the auction here with 8½ losers in second seat, East passes. West with 16 hcp and a balanced hand opens opens 1NT. East responds 2 as Stayman and when West answers 2, no 4-card major, East bids 3NT.

Play: This auction screams for a major suit lead, on defense North finds the killer lead with the AKx, setting up potential heart tricks for South. But once declarer (West) is in lead, West cashes out 4 spades + 1 heart + 5 diamonds, for 10 tricks making 4.

  1. weak jump overcall
  2. forcing raise in clubs
  3. forcing pass

This should be an easy auction to reach 6. Some might have North opening the bidding 2 which is ok North clearly wants a heart opening lead, but with 4 spades North passes.

Auction: In the auction here North deals and after 3 passes, West opens the bidding 1, North makes a weak jump overcall of 2 and East makes a forcing raise in clubs by bidding 3. After South doubles 3 (depending on partnership agreements, the double could mean several things) West passes (forcing pass) giving East a chance to define his hand. East shows support for clubs with 4. On my convention card we would take 4 as Roman Keycard Minorwood but in the auction here with a singleton heart West bids 6.

Play: On the play declarer (West) can initially count 2 natural spades + 1 spade ruff + 1 natural heart + 3 heart ruffs + 1 diamond + 3 clubs for 11 tricks so West must find a 12th trick. This can be done either, as in the play here, dropping the J and setting up a second heart trick or playing the A and leading up to the queen finessing for the K and dropping the J setting up a second diamond winner.

  1. 2/1 GF
  2. sets spades as trump

  4. ask about quality of spades

Like Board 5, this should be an easy auction to 6.

Auction: East opens the bidding 1 with the plans to make a jump rebid of 3. West makes a 2/1 Game Forcing bid of 2 and East jumps to 3 setting the trump as spades. West has an easy bid of 4 as a control bid (trump has already been set as spades) and East bids 4. West could cue bid diamonds with 5 or bid 4NT as RKC Blackwood but bids 5 here inviting to slam asking partner about the quality of his spades. East with the top 2 spades AK and 3 of top 5 AKJ bids 6.

Play: Playing 6 is very easy. Some players on defense might not consider leading an unsported ace, but South knows West has already shown length in diamonds as a source of tricks and there is no justifiable reason to sit on the A. Point of fact is South does not cash the A East will take all the tricks.

  1. sets trump as hearts

Lets get one thing straight up front opening 4, especially in 1st or 2nd seat, does not mean "you think you can make 4". I get this response often at the table when asking for an explanation of a 4 opening bid the responder says "he think he can make 4" (sheesh) Opening 4 is a preemptive bid based on playing strength or trick taking potential.

Auction: West opens the bidding 1 and East responds 1. West makes a jump rebid of 3 (sets the trump) and East responds 4 as game forcing. West with what might be a lot of losers bids 4 and East passes.

I bitch a lot about hand evaluation and 11 being the new 12 and hand evaluation (see Board 1) But here is the example of an 11 high card points opening hand in 1st or 2nd seat. All hcp the K108xx, the Q10x and the KQJ9 are in suits with length and supported by an intermediate.

Auction: West opens the bidding 1 and East responds 2 as Two Over One Game Force . West rebids 3 (some might rebid 2 showing a weak hand) and East rebids 3. West knowing there is a misfit, he is on a minimal opening and MOST IMPORTANTLY after a rebid of partner's hearts, passes 3.
