All pass

People frequently ask what I mean by a "nice four-card suit," when I use that phrase to describe hands that might overcall or open with only four-cards instead of the usual five. The North hearts definitely qualify as a nice four-card suit, but I won't open any four-card major in first or second seat so as North I'd open a pedestrian 1. East's hand isn't worth an overcall with the opposite-of-nice five-card suit. South shoud respond with 1NT (this hand isn't isn't good enough for any kind of invitation, whether in diamonds or notrump). West might choose to pass since 1 pass 1NT tends to show the minors by the responder, but I think it's worth it to pre-balance to get the opponents out of 1NT. Two passes around to South who might choose to double, but with four diamonds should probably just raise partner. Two diamonds will end the auction.

West can lead his singleton heart and try to find a way to partner since he knows he will get back in with the A. The defense looks likely to take at least 6 tricks, but at matchpoints there's a big difference between +50 and +100. 1NT by South is touch-and-go as West will lead a club and then declarer can play a diamond towards the K and West should duck it, but if declarer tries again West needs to win and guess to play a spade... not at all clear without good signaling agreements. Another hand where bidding light pays off. I'll send this to my friend (and former partner) Marty Bergen. He'll be pleased.

Larry Cohen Hand Analysis

East opens 1 and South shouldn't overcall. Seat and vulnerability factor into overcalling decisions, but as a matter of pure hand evaluation the QJ tight of spades is a bad holding unless partner has shown the suit. That coupled with opener's diamond bid makes this a non-overcall. West should take a chance and bid 1. The favorable vulnerability and the lack of wasted values (like QJ doubleton, for instance) makes this an appealing call. North passes and West has a 3 1/2 heart bid. If you can grab that from your box, go ahead. Since we're playing matchpoints, I usually take the low road. West will be relieved to be at only the 3-level.

The play is complicated beginning with the opening lead. Garozzo's rule (named for the legendary Italian bridge player Benito Garozzo) says that "When a singleton is a possible opening lead, then go for it." That said, we don't usually like to lead singletons when we have natural trump tricks. Here, though, do you have a trump trick or just length that will be drawn easily? Not wanting to lead away from an honor or wanting to give away the trump position, I might lead the 9 anyway. It looks like leading a trump might have been the winner as it often is when the opponents have only an 8-card fit, but North can't know that for sure.

   Pass
1Pass1NTPass
2All pass

South passes and West opens 1. North might overcall 2, particularly at these colors, but the lack of good spot cards would prevent me from getting in the action. I know I'm a broken record saying "seat and vulnerability", but compare this hand with the one that overcalled on board 1, and see the importance of partner being a passed hand (and the opponents being mostly limited). East stretches to respond (another similarity to board 2) 1NT which I prefer to play is semi-forcing. You don't need to have a lot of agreements about semi-forcing notrump and it's very helpful to be able to play 1NT at matchpoints. West bids 2which will promise four diamonds opposite a semi-forcing notrump. For those playing 1NT forcing, I think the East hand is stuck bidding 2 and praying that partner doesn't take another call or perhaps passing the original 1 bid.

Any auction where the opponents play in declarer's second suit screams for a trump lead. I'd lead one, even with that AK staring at me. This is another deal where the play could go many ways so I won't dig in too deep. Any of declarer's lines (short of drawing trump) will probably turn out okay. If you do go down, make sure you're not blindly drawing trump without asking first if you need them to ruff out losers.

West's notrump is standard issue, though I know someone somewhere was afraid to open notrump with three small hearts. I don't know why the idea that notrump promises stoppers everywhere exists in the bridge playing world, but I haven't been able to get rid of it yet. I'm still trying. (Well, I do know--people learned a million years ago when they had rules about such things.) North passes and East should not use Stayman . With 4-3-3-3 shape, the East hand has no extra value in a suit contract and so should just bid 3NT rather than help the defenders by forcing declarer to show his shape.

North has no attractive leads. Against this auction, it's usually a good idea to lead a major, but which? I'd probably lead a spade. Which one would depend on my leading agreements with partner; top of nothing? middle? low from three? Whichever you choose is fine. Declarer will win (possibly trying the J and seeing it covered), lay down a top diamond and then play a club to the queen and take a losing diamond finesse. Will North shift to hearts now? Again this depends on leading and signaling conventions. Even if North doesn't shift to hearts, the declaring side only has 8 tricks (three diamonds, three clubs and two spades). That said, I'm sure some declarers might find a way to make it, likely with a little help from their friends.

North's 3 would be routine not-vulnerable, but red against white preempts should be solid. The 7-2-2-2 shape might cause some to wimp out and only open 2. Over 3, the auction shown looks standard-issue. East wouldn't want to risk missing a major-suit fit (or 3NT) to insist on the club suit. South has nothing interesting, but with 3 diamonds the LAW says to raise and I follow the law. West's diamonds don't look to be worth a whole lot (if you switched the diamond suit and spade suit, I'd bid 4).

North might lead a spade (not a diamond, in spite of partner's support) to exit safely (and on very lucky days, to get a spade ruff). The deal eventually hinges on declarer's play of the hearts. Lacking the K10982, there is no way to avoid a loser in the suit. The best way to play is to lead the ace and play another. On this deal that prevents North from getting a spade ruff, but the play is better in a number of situations (imagine the singleton K or K109x in South) and it's important to visualize these types of card combinations.
