PassPass3All pass

North passes and East opens with 1. South overcalls 1 with both a good suit and a decent hand. West's Negative Double might be pushy to some, but having strength (what little West has) in her long suits makes this hand worth a call. North has as good a hand as possible for passing originally and should make a strong raise by cuebidding East's suit. East gets to bid 2 to confirm a fit and South has no game interest opposite a passed hand, so probably bids 2. West and North will pass and East has to choose whether or not to balance. Playing matchpoints, it rates to be better to bid a little more and either go down, make or push your opponents into an unmakeable contract. North might take the push to 3 (or possibly even double this potential law-violation), but it's a difficult guess.

In 3, the friendly lie of the clubs should allow declarer to take 9 tricks. The play could go a number of ways depending on how the defenders attack declarer. If the North-South pair win the auction in spades, declarer can't quite set up the heart ruff in dummy without conceding a diamond ruff to East limiting the pair to 8 tricks. For those of us who like to test the LAW of Total Tricks , this is one of those strange deals that doesn't fit the simple version of the LAW since there are 16 trump and 17 tricks. That said, Larry Cohen wrote a whole book and only the first two or three chapters cover the simple version and the rest are exceptions... this must be somewhere in the back (singletons, short suit honors, etc.)

3Pass4All pass

East's initial plan is to open 1 and rebid 2NT. The auction might convince East to change her plan. South overcalls 1 and West makes a Negative Double (with likely one bid, it's nicer to show two suits rather than just the hearts). North passes and East now faces a decision. She could jump to 2, 3, or 4. I think the best option is to imagine what you would do with two small diamonds (since the queen has lost its value). Jumping to 2 should show a good hand, probably around this range in total value, but bidding more is reasonable. West's choice to continue is questionable, but West has nice shape and the K is well placed. If West invites, East will certainly go on.

Playing in some number of spades after a singleton heart lead, declarer will face some challenges. It's not at all clear how to proceed when cashing a high spade reveals a spade honor in South. Declarer would like to take a spade finesse following the principle of restricted choice (a concept you can read up on at larryco.com as it's too long to discuss here), but getting to dummy isn't so simple. Declarer might try to work on clubs to gain an entry to dummy (and get rid of club losers). It wouldn't be surprising to see the defenders score a trump trick here.

   2NT
All pass

South opens 2NT and North has to choose between 3NT and pass. Matchpoints as a form of scoring rewards conservative bidding since the point bonus for bidding games doesn't translate into a matchpoint boost. People sometimes tell me that they've heard that 4-3-3-3 hands are good for notrump. I respond that 4-3-3-3 hands are good for nothing. Having extra length is always better and 4-4-3-2 hands play better than 4-3-3-3 ones, even at notrump. I expect about half the field to be in 3NT anyways, which is a reasonable guess.

West should lead the J with a nice sequence, and East will take the A and need to guess what to do. It's unlikely that West would lead with J109 tight on this auction, so I'd continue with the Q. Declarer will win and probably try to lead towards the clubs in dummy. I think I would finesse the J hoping to gain an extra entry to dummy. When that loses, the defense takes two diamond tricks and declarer needs to pitch one of each major taking 8 tricks.

21Pass?
  1. Reverse Drury (limit raise in spades)

After two passes, East has to decide what path seems best with this rock crusher. Starting with 2 would be reasonable, but 1 keeps more options open. South shouldn't risk a 2 or 3 bid at this vulnerability. West's bid shown is a convention called Reverse Drury. Reverse Drury allows a pair to stop low in case a third- or fourth-seat opener opened light. This way, the responder shows an limit raise at the two-level rather than jumping to three of the major. After this bid, East should do something slammish. Some pairs have fancy agreements about continuations after a Drury bid, but you need to discuss with partner what becomes game forcing. That said, reaching this very good slam will take some good decisions on both sides. A delayed Splinter at some point by West might do the trick.

This slam is near laydown. Declarer should not take a heart finesse, but can draw trump (assuming they are 2-1) and ruff two diamonds. Before ruffing the second diamond, declarer needs to cash the A and Q so when she gets to dummy, she can throw the small heart on the K. The heart finesse is what experts would call a "practice finesse". That's a finesse that is unnecessary but declarer takes just to practice her finessing skills. It's always a little sad as a defender when a practice finesse works.

  1. New Minor Forcing

North passes and East opens 1. South passes and West responds 1. Now when it comes back to East she should jump to 2NT to show 18-19 points and a balanced hand. West can now bid new minor Forcing (or Checkback Stayman or whatever system you like over 2NT rebids) to ask for a major-suit fit. East confesses to having three spades. West's 3NT then offers a choice of games. West wouldn't use New Minor Forcing without a fifth spade, so East knows what the West hand looks like. East might preference back to spades, but the 4-3-3-3 shape might also convince her to play in notrump.

The play will depend on the lead and continuation. In a vacuum, declarer might like to try to lead towards the A108, but with the entry situation what it is, it's probably better to lay down the ace and play for the K to be onside. Ultimately, declarer is likely to go right on this deal because she simply doesn't have the entries to dummy to try anything creative.
