It will take some expert bidding to get to slam on this hand even though it is an excellent contract. The best chance for E/W is if West starts with a 2 bid over South's 1 overcall. At first it might seem that 2 is an overbid, holding only 6 HCP, but West has a huge fit, and a void and is clearly going to compete on this hand anyway, and hiding a five card major would be a mistake. If West instead makes a takeout double, it will be harder for E/W to get to slam, but East will certainly drive to slam if West bids 2. With all of the suits breaking, declarer has tricks to spare in either a or contract, and will only lose the Ace. Thus, all of the matchpoints will be won or lost in the bidding, and anyone who manages to get to slam will reap a huge matchpoint reward.

3 looks like it might win the auction whether East opens 1NT or 1. With such a concentration of values in s, and a full 17 HCP it is tempting to open the East hand with 1. however, with so many Jacks (all of them!), I just can't see evaluating the East hand as 18-19 HCP and opening 1 is likely to lead to a lot of rebid problems if you aren't willing to jump to game next. At this vulnerability, if East opens 1, South might bid 4, but over a 1NT opening bid, 3 looks like enough. West is really stuck for a bid over 3. If East had opened 1, West might push to bid 3, and if East then bids 4, this will be a disaster, as the defense can take the first five tricks including two black suit ruffs, and declarer still has to figure out the red suits, and could end up down three on a bad day. Can West find the winning bid of 3NT? It will certainly never happen if East has opened 1, but even over 1NT, it looks like a big stretch. As it happens, 3NT only makes if declarer plays South for the Queen and this doesn't look like the right play on the bidding. So, the end result will be a pretty pedestrian 3 contract. Note that if West can double 3 for penalty, they might take a chance on that and this will be an even worse disaster than a 4 contract, as there really isn't any way for South to misplay a 3 contract and end up with more than four losers.

The bidding has the potential to get a little wild on this hand, with everyone but East likely to be disappointed in their partner. South has a normal 1 opening, and with a 7-5 hand, North really can't pass even with only 4 HCP. North isn't going to be surprised if South starts bidding a lot of black suits, but with a seven card suit to fall back on, North will be able to survive even that. As it happens, South is not the one with all of the s. East could just jump to 5 right away, but their hand is way too strong for that. In addition, if West has a fit, then the final contract might well be a game or slam. South of course doesn't yet know that North has no HCP and no s and will likely bid 3. West would like to double this for penalty, but most will not play that a double is penalty oriented here, so West will pass, hoping to hear another double. North won't be happy with 3, but will quickly pass, and now East can jump to 5. Should West raise to 6? East has shown a monster hand, and the Ace is almost certainly a trick (the King is clearly opposite shortness, and in fact, West is probably expecting a void in the East hand.) Notice that if East's second suit were in s and not in s, West's hand would be useless. In general, when you know your partner is highly distributional, it is usually best not to raise to slam unless you have help in their known suit(s). West has to believe it unlikely that the opponents have an unmentioned 10 card fit (though on the actual hand, they do have an unmentioned 10 card fit), but I admit, I don't know whether a raise is best at matchpoints.

On the lay of the cards, South must find the lead of the Queen in order for 6 to go down, and this seems exceedingly unlikely. In fact, a high is almost certainly the right lead (and yes, some South pairs will double either 5 or 6.) South will be quite surprised when North ruffs the opening lead, pulls trump and then leads a towards the King to bring home 12 tricks without breaking a sweat.

East will be stuck guessing after a 4 opening by West. Slam depends not only on West having a control, but also not having a loser. If North ventures a 5 bid, then East might take a chance at slam, but at matchpoints, bidding a slam without being able to find out if it is a good contract is not usually a winning strategy. If West bids a conservative 3, East has an easy raise, so it appears like virtually the entire field will be in 4. Declarer will have no problem making 12 tricks, so anyone who does bid slam will get a clear top. Will there be any matchpoint variance at all? As it happens, North will almost certainly lead a high , and now declarer can put North under some pressure. Declarer can pull trump, run all of the trump and the s, ending in hand with the 10, and North will have to decide whether to keep a high or the Ace. If declarer is smart, they will run the suit first before running all the trump, as this will force North to discard first at trick 12. Otherwise, South's discard of the King at trick 12 will give the game away. Of course, a good South will count the hand early and discard the King much earlier in the play, and good defenders will pitch spot cards that should make North's play easy. However, there will be some pairs who get this one wrong, and allow declarer to make their 10 on the last trick of the game, for a near top score.
