East has a borderline opening bid. She would prefer to have her values in spades and diamonds, her longer suits. South has a poor overcall however we expect many to get into the action. West will support her partner and North has a Limit Raise in support of her partner however she does not have the room to show her hand. (Also, she may devalue the K in her hand as her left - hand opponent opened the suit.)

With a singleton heart East will compete to the three level. Neither South nor North has the values to compete further.

Declarer must lose tricks in each suit. South will lead a heart. From her holding the correct lead for most pairs is the J. North will take her ace if declarer covers, else North will encourage in hearts. The defense will continue hearts and declarer will ruff.

East needs entries to dummy and will try the diamond finesse losing to North. North will likely switch to a club, waiting patiently for her second diamond trick. South will win a club and the defense will win one spade. East will fail in her contract however the one undertrick should be a good result for her side.

West may lead a heart in an effort to "hit" partner as there is little future in her suits. Furthermore she has no entries to her hand. Hearts is an unbid suit so it's likely her partner is holding some hearts.

The result of the deal will depend upon declarer's plays in spades and diamonds. South should come to at least nine tricks on the deal.

South's first play in diamonds will be the K. If she follows with the queen she will learn of the split and that East has four diamonds. She can take the marked diamond finesse.

Play in spades is a little more difficult. South must play West for the J to win two spade tricks. There is good chance that many will find this play. Not because of having deduced that West has the jack but rather because it doesn't cost to make the play. Declarer will lead her first spade to the king, losing to East's ace. When she leads spades a second time there is no harm in calling for the 10 from dummy. If the play wins declarer will have an extra overtrick. If it loses, she is giving up a trick she would have lost anyway.

East must lead a diamond else declarer will have the tempo to come to 12 tricks. On any non- diamond lead, declarer will win the lead as soon as possible, draw trump, dislodge the A (if it's not already been played) and discard her losers on dummy's good clubs.

Note that West cannot successfully lead a diamond to establish a trick for her side.

So the problem on this board reduces to which suit East should select.

A trump doesn't seem right nor does a heart. We strongly dislike leading from broken suits as it frequently seems to relinquish a trick.

So East will choose between a diamond and a club. With a slightly stronger club holding we think most Easts will select the 9 as an opening lead.

  1. I like Diamonds
  2. 1 or 4 Keycards for diamonds

East will open and West will transfer to diamonds. The auction is easier for pairs who play Four-suit transfers as East can superaccept and show she likes diamonds.

(Note that some pairs would bid 3 on this sequence to super accept. The convention was originally developed to work that way. However we prefer to reverse the bids and show the superaccept by bidding the suit.)

West will check for keycards and find one in the East hand. She will bid the diamond slam.

Few players lead away from kings against a slam so we don't expect many Norths to lead a spade. This is unfortunate for the defense as they will lose their only opportunity to score a trick.

West will win the opening lead, draw trump and cash her top clubs. When the suit splits 3 - 3 she has a parking spot for her singleton spade, making an unexpected overtrick.

All pass

East will jam the auction and open a Weak Two. South will reluctantly overcall. She would have preferred to bid 2NT showing the value of her hand however she cannot do so without a spade stopper. West has spade support but only a modicum of high cards and will likely pass at this vulnerability. Proponents of the Low of Total Tricks will venture a 3 bid. North has a good heart suit but lacks the values for a free bid so she will pass or support clubs if West bids.

Playing in spades, EW will lose one heart and two clubs.

If NS declare the deal and are in clubs they will lose two spades and two diamonds if the defense collects their tricks. (Interestingly, NS have the same nine tricks in hearts however we do not expect them to find that strain.)

East is a touch shy for her second bid however nothing else is suitable. West will show her diamonds which implies longer hearts. East will bid the notrump game.

To protect her K declarer will win the opening lead and take the club finesse. (We'll consider an opening spade lead in a moment.) Once that finesse works she has six clubs, two top hearts and two top diamonds. The North hand gets squeezed on the run of the clubs.

North cannot discard a heart for obvious reasons. Nor can she discard a diamond as this would allow declarer to cash the K and continue with the J, smothering the 10 in the North hand. So North must pitch three spades including the Q. Declarer can now exit a spade. South will win two spade tricks however on the second spade North is squeezed yet again. Declarer will prevail and win 11 tricks.(If North keeps her Q East will win 12 tricks.)

On the lead of a spade declarer must win her K at the first trick. Her only chance to come to nine tricks is for the club finesse to work. So East will get to dummy to lead a club toward her hand and finesse. She now has 11 tricks. On the run of the clubs North is squeezed as in the discussion about and must discard three spades. East can now take the heart finesse losing to North who unfortunately for her side does not have a spade to return. Again declarer will win 12 tricks.

We don't expect East to be able to diagnose the layout at the table so North will not have to make the esoteric play of jettisoning her Q.

  1. New Minor Forcing

West will make a checkback bid at her second turn to ask for three card spade support. Most pairs use New Minor Forcing to accomplish this task. East will show three spades and West will bid the game because of her shortness in hearts and clubs. In actuality neither is an asset as West will be trumping with natural spade tricks.

The defense can prevail on this deal to set the contract however at the table we expect most declarers to make their contract.

North will open the defense by cashing her top two diamonds. Interestingly a diamond continuation is best for the defense as it will promote a trump trick. If declarer ruffs low, South will overruff with her J. If West calls for the K from dummy, South will later cover the 10 when declarer attempts to draw trump and North's 9 will provide the defense with a trick. The A will be the setting trick.

We don't expect many Norths to play a third round of diamonds. On any continuation declarer will be able to establish clubs to make her contract.

Let's look at what happens if North switches to another suit. Declarer will win and immediately play the Q. If South takes her ace declarer can win the return, draw trump and get to dummy to use the clubs for discards. If South holds up for one round of clubs to win the second round and returns the suit, West can ruff high and draw trump dropping the J doubleton. Declarer is in dummy and can cash winning clubs for discards.

West has an easy bid in fourth seat and will start with 1. East, in many partnerships would prefer to bid 2 however most play this as some form of Drury so East will bid notrump. This is a reasonable bid and shows her values for pairs playing 2/1. Standard pairs will bid 2NT. (This cannot be Jacoby 2NT as East is a passed hand.)

West must misrepresent her hand on her second bid. She wants to show spade length however 3 is not a forcing bid and West wants to be in game. So she must with manufacture a 3 bid or try 3NT. We think most pairs will end in 3NT.

A diamond lead by South will hold declarer to 10 tricks. Any other lead will give declarer the timing to establish one club trick and one diamond trick to go along with ther six spades and three hearts, coming to 11 tricks.

We think many South players will lead a heart, the unbid major, in an effort to hit partner's heart suit.

At the table, South will start a spade. If declarer calls for the 10 from dummy she will win nine tricks. Upon winning her spade trick she can establish the club suit for four tricks and cash her diamonds and good heart. That appears to be 10 tricks however the defense will have taken three spades and one club.

South must lead a heart to hold declarer to eight tricks. North will take her Q when declarer plays low. North will play a spade to South who will play a second heart. When the defense wins their club trick they will have two hearts, two spades and one club.
